A movie so gritty that I could feel the dirt in my teeth all the way through. When Mikey realizes towards the end that Nicky is the only tether left to his origins, I felt it too. That’s what great movies do, they make you feel things. Mikey and Nicky is a truly devastating male character study by the great Elaine May.

I think this was my fourth time watching Chinatown. For whatever reason  I was distracted in my previous viewings but I also always suspected that when I locked in that it would be elevated to an all time favorite. Tonight was the night. It didn’t hurt that the new 4K restoration is flawless and that I got to catch it on a big screen.

What in the hell was that?

A reminder that the “cool new neighborhood“ that everyone is raving about was probably a neighborhood of color that is being gentrified by hipsters.
