YESTERDAY WAS YEARS AGO
Inhale.
My mind aglow,
I stepped out, into the sand
its every grain, a crystalizing corner of a constellation
tethered, from stone to shining stone,
in sleek and fine condition
by the living, fervent energy
awakened from the blurring edges of my aimless visions.
My feet had found the path I’d learned so well, as a child
leading me, kindly and courteously, up along the ridge
where I could crouch and watch the winding variations
silently rising from the jutting inlets,
tracing every motion of their rising journeys with my hand.
The sun was setting, when I reached the pinnacle
so that its radiance could patiently encircle every burning, shining, singularity
upon the surface
of my home.
Exhale.
My mind ablaze,
I turned in place, to walk back down
with ankles bending, just above my tired, sliding footfalls
rebalancing, that I might echo back each sharp adjustment
of the cascading, tumbling, torn, descent,
the waves of heat obscuring every footstep
back to where I’d started, long ago.
My eyes were weary, now
inspired more by burdened obligation
than the reverence of my memories upon the page I’d carried,
long ago, when I was only family;
kin, instead of king.
The moons were fighting for a spot, out front
to shine among their brothers, shared
blocking and jostling to write their every message
heavy with sullen news, of worlds at war.
