Dune: Part Two

2024

★★★½

I’m sorry Dune fans, I simply can’t see those sand worms and not think of an Alaskan Bull Worm. Maybe SpongeBob is the actual Messiah.

Can you imagine the Oscars this year if this movie had come out when it was supposed to? 😳 I’m kind of glad it got pushed back because I’m sure it’s going to dominate next year, just like Oppenheimer is this year.

I tried not to have pre conceived judgement on what this film would be because I didn’t connect with part one, so I went in with an open mind and really wanted it to blow me away like it clearly has for most people. It’s a weird place to be in when I recognize the effort that was put into a film and am blown away by the technicality of it all: visuals, sound, performances, you name it, it’s all there. Something is just holding me back from truly enjoying it.

I respect and appreciate it for everything it’s doing (and how much it means to the true fans), I just have to accept that that I don’t have much connection to the story at all. I personally would have liked them to spend a little more time with the narrative of it all for us normies that haven’t read the source material. But we know that wasn’t DV’s goal so I have to take it for what it is and I accept that I’m not worthy to be in that particular book club.

I did, however, really enjoy Austin Butler’s unhinged performance. But duh, I knew I would.
