Immensely cute, but still unnecessary. The casting, the music, and the cultural depictions were the highlights. I liked it best when Stitch was the only alien on screen. While I thought the story had a solid finish, there were several parts of act three which seemed to bring it down to Disney Channel-level material.

Among the best Disney live-action remakes.

The stakes have never been higher… in this franchise, or just about anything this side of a superhero film.

Perhaps as a way of setting that dark and foreboding mood, much of the film is dimly lit, with an aggressive amount of shadows (I know, “We live and die in the shadows…” and all that). There are also lots of (maybe too many) close up shots, bringing a feeling of claustrophobia.

I’ve become accustomed to the amazing locations in the franchise, often shot in daylight, whether in amazing cities like Rome and Venice, or well-crafted and immersive sets. Didn’t get as much of that in The Final Reckoning. Save for a few key scenes, this didn’t feel like the spectacle that it usually is. Too many scenes in government buildings and bland spaces — if you recently rewatched the previous films, you will notice a big difference.

Rather than be a seamless continuation of the story in Dead Reckoning, this one begins at a place where it needed to establish momentum, and I expect it’s so that the film does not exclude anyone who hasn’t see the previous installment (boost the box office numbers, right babe?). Cue the flashbacks and the montages, and it all becomes a rather busy trip down memory lane, for what is presumably the final mission for Ethan Hunt.

…I actually enjoyed that part quite a bit, being a big fan of the franchise. However, at around 45 minutes in I really began feeling the runtime. You see, there is A LOT of setup and exposition — even into act three. There were also WAYY more characters than necessary (sadly no Vanessa Kirby, and I was holding out hope that Ilsa wasn’t really gone). The payoff had to be considerable to warrant all of it, and I am a wee bit depressed when I say that it fell flat for me, emotionally as well as thematically and narratively.

But, holy cow, that submarine scene was great. Very tense, edge-of-your-seat type of stuff with almost no dialogue. It would’ve been pretty dope if that opened the film instead of happening past the half-way mark.

The plane-chase scene, probably where Tom Cruise does his most impressive stunt work for this film, is also pretty cool… but that whole thing with Ethan going after the bad guy in a race against time to get something from him while his team hangs back to tackle bombs and such — that was already done in Fallout, and it was much, much better then.

I’ve been highly, highly, highly anticipating this one for a few years now, and the fact that it didn’t deliver absolutely guts me. Still, it would be an impossible mission for me to give this a negative rating… I can’t, I love the franchise too much.

Not a great film by any stretch, but this Bourne-esque story set in a post-9/11 Middle East was compelling at the least. I watched for Ridley Scott and a great cast, and all of those individuals delivered even when the film as a whole isn’t a home-run.

In all honestly, 2007 Golshifteh Farahani could probably convince me to give Jordan a try.

The sophomore effort from the Philippou twins is, in my humble opinion as a novice horror film watcher, better than its predecessor Talk to Me. Many people were high on that film, perhaps more than it deserved, and likely my opinion will be met with disgruntled scowls.

Bring Her Back isn’t particularly scary (if I correctly, there weren’t any jump scares, even), instead it offers mystery, thrills, and several scenes intended for maximum shock-value. It’s compelling, and the themes work even if the logic of the story isn’t seamless.

Enjoyed this quite a bit, but this isn’t one I’d care to give a rewatch. Very worthy of catching in a theater for horror fans… I almost enjoyed the audience reactions as much as the film itself.

Sally Hawkins is pretty darn good - she deserves at least as much hype as Hugh Grant got last year for Heretic.

It feels like a crime that The Academy of Motion Picture Arts will only be adding a stunts category after the supposed last entry in the Mission: Impossible franchise has been released. Seriously, such a dadgum shame, but even though it’s late, I’m glad it’s happening.

I like Dead Reckoning more after sitting on it for a year. It takes a solid half hour to get going (probably could have cut most, or all of that), but once they get to Rome it’s great. I’ll say it again, the third act stunts haven’t gotten enough appreciation.

SPOILER TALK:

Still gutted that Ilsa died - I wanted a lot more of her in the franchise, not less. Also, really wish there was more of her sharing the screen with Grace. Would’ve been a fun dynamic, and cool to have two awesome female characters tear things up together.

Reviews for The Final Reckoning have been somewhat mixed by reviewers I like at Cannes, but I’m determined to be among the crowd who loves it. Can’t wait to see it on Thursday.

Perhaps as upbeat and gleeful as a violent action film can get. Proportionately, this is as gory as it is fun — you’ll see what I mean when the chainsaw comes out.

This is certainly the kind of flick that requires you to suspend your disbelief, but that isn’t to say the writing is totally dumb. It is, but it’s methodical and deliberate. The first priority the writers had was to make it fun, and making it goofy is a natural byproduct.

My immensely intelligent take is that it is what it is, and what it is is what it was supposed to be. And I had a good time.

Josh Hartnett should be a bigger star.

Judging by the trailer I knew this would be a very off-kilter thriller of sorts, but I was still unprepared for the all-in weirdness. Nic Cage arguably makes this whole thing float, and he remains so watchable even when the movie feels like it isn’t.

The Surfer is definitely saying something, but I lost the metaphor somewhere in the second half, and I don’t have much interest in searching it out.

Unique stylistically, and strives mightily for subversiveness in its writing. It kinda-sorta succeeds.

The book was great, and I enjoyed a chapter or two at a time over the course of a few weeks. It’s a very contemplative and philosophical novel, and thus takes time to absorb fully. Adapting it to a film seems like a tough ask, especially if the goal is to stay true to the spirit of the source material.

Sean Connery and the rest of the cast are good, the filming locations are perfect, it’s just that the overflowing screenplay lacks smoothness and clarity. I expected as much from this film as I was reading through the novel. Kudos to the team for taking a swing at this and still producing an overall good film.

It’s rare these days, but occasionally Marvel will do a film with real, human, sympathetic characters. It’s kinda nice.

Also, it’s great that this didn’t feel like just another episode in a cheap TV series. And, good heavens, thank you for not mentioning the ridiculous multiverse nonsense. Thunderbolts* is very grounded relative to whatever phase of the MCU we are currently in.

Florence Pugh rules in this. But, rarely, if ever, does she not rule. The cast as a whole was fun, and the material they had to work with didn’t go overboard in any direction, which was key.

Ya see, Hollywood? This is what happens to a film when you properly use Jon Bernthal. The guy was so watchable and added a lot to the film. All of the best moments are because of him.

The ant Squared, although lacking any sort of ing, has a good amount of decent action, and a solid amount of humor and charm.

…But, it has major pacing issues. In the second half there are a few just-for-fun scenes that totally halt any momentum. It awkwardly picks back up, but it feels like half of a different movie stitched on (or even like two or three separate episodes of a mini series). The plot became too contrived and too convoluted.

As expected, it was a little silly, so that wasn’t a problem. Overall, I had a good time. For the first half I thought I might be giving it a higher rating than it ended up with.

A24 takes How to Train Your Dragon and makes it weird. It wasn’t long ago when everyone fell in love with Grogu (aka “Baby Yoda”), and it seems that debuting director Isaiah Saxon decided to capitalize on a particular soft spot in society for cute, furry creatures, so he made a version of his own mixed with a lemur (he did a good job, it was cute).

This is an arthouse family-oriented film that I just don’t see any young people being very interested in… and if they are, I don’t see them being entertained for its duration. I’d like to think that I have a more expansive attention span than children and teens, but there were stretches where I was checking my watch. Furthermore, it’s also stylized in a way that I think people of a certain age will struggle to appreciate.

The best part is the world-building and the production design. The sets are all immaculately put together. When it comes to the world-building, there is something *almost* wondrous about it… unfortunately I felt it kept me at arms-length, when I would have loved to become immersed in it. There is an absence of warmth until the very end.

It’s great to see Willem DaFoe and Emily Watson in this, who always add a tremendous amount to a film with their performances. The young actors didn’t have much to work with — even lead Helena Zengel, who it still seemed had a thankless job.

I didn’t love How to Train Your Ochi, but this is undoubtedly the launch of an interesting career for Isaiah Saxon.

Maybe the real vampires were the friends we made along the way.

There is a lot of acclaim for the originality of Sinners, and it earns that adjective by simply not being part of a previously existing intellectual property. The film is, of course, not wholly original, but the way Coogler made efforts to combine familiar pieces together was certainly unique. Likewise, the themes aren’t especially fresh, but the story built around them was written with a lot of creative intent. The vampires are, more or less, the typical kind of vampire.

Perhaps, the majority of the praise belongs to the sound and score. The big draw for me was all the potential for the integration of music, which I anticipated would infuse the story with power thematically. I think many would agree that the best parts were the scenes including musical numbers.

For numerous reasons, this was one of my most anticipated films of the year. To my dismay, Sinners fell soundly short of being great, and I left somewhat unsatisfied (blame it on my high expectations, and the immense hype on Letterboxd). The story wasn’t as expertly crafted as I hoped it would be; the structure and pacing made it seem like a few different stories awkwardly stitched together, there wasn’t a seamless merging of different genres, nor did the themes and ideas sync with the narrative entirely cohesively. Under scrutiny it doesn’t work so smoothly, so for best results one should treat Sinners like a popcorn flick.

I find that Ryan Coogler, a great director and brilliant visual artist, has the exact opposite problem as Aaron Sorkin. His writing doesn’t measure up to his skills behind the camera. Maybe the two of them will collab one day. If not, I’ll still be anticipating Coogler’s next film.

The Ballad of Wallis Island is a physicians prescribed remedy for aches and pains of the soul, as well as for bouts of gloom and typical cases of Seasonal Affective Disorder. Today, current events will bog one down just as much as the past will, and if the future doesn’t look too bright from where he is sitting, then that’s all the worse. Wallis Island is the type of movie that endeavors to be a lighthouse for people who need it.

Really enjoyed the writing here, with one particular inventively quirky character, and a final stretch that turned my heart into a puddle. The story isn’t groundbreaking, and it’s even quite predictable, but that did nothing to diminish my experience.

I suppose I felt out-of-the-loop, and I decided to see what all the fuss was about.

I found myself in an almost sold-out theater on a Wednesday night, and the audience (consisting of 99% adults and older teens) was undoubtedly the worst I’ve ever experienced. Nearly everyone took every opportunity to literally yell, clap, cheer, and make any other noise they could come up with, beginning at the opening title-card. They were all clearly having the time of their lives, behaving more or less like they were at a sporting event after having a few alcoholic beverages. When it was over, the enthusiasm still hadn’t waned. As I was walking out of the theater I heard multiple people recount that they had indeed just experienced a fantastic film.

What world do I live in?

I had no idea — none whatsoever, that my least anticipated film of the year would be such a cultural phenomenon. It was exactly as I expected it would be, and just as I expected, it isn’t for me.

This is totally a fan-service film, and if you aren’t a fan, it wont have much to offer you. It’s basically the quality of MCU movies these days. For better or worse, this is what the people want.

Perhaps it needn’t be said that I’ve never played the game and I understood none of the references.

It’s hard to find a better duo in cinema than Brando and Nicholson, and they were certainly the draw for me and responsible for the highlights. The Missouri Breaks seems equal parts tragedy and comedy, and it successfully made me feel both. This film as a whole is not a home-run — it’s lacking some heft thematically, and doesn’t totally deliver narratively. Still, a great watch.

A straightforward story sans any fluff, full of rich human (quirky and flawed) characters, with a significant amount of charm. Had a blast watching this. Wit, humor, John Wayne, songs performed by Dean Martin, gunfights, the lovely Angie Dickinson… a great picture.

It’s impressive how uninteresting the story is. It’s incredible how bland the characters are. It’s astounding the apathy I felt for any of the “romance”. It’s amazing how this talented cast was wasted. It’s astonishing how I made it to the credits.

Thank you for the mystery movie, AMC.

There are numerous reasons why The Untouchables is so watchable. The cast is great, particularly the legend Sean Connery, and De Niro who totally chews up his scenes as Al Capone. The script is efficient and it makes the runtime fly by.

And there are some truly ridiculous and great scenes. At the top of the list is the slo-mo shootout on the stairway while a baby in a stroller rolls through. There are amazing shots made from impossible angles with a revolver. A character gets absolutely lit up by a tommy gun, and then crawls around like he only got punched in the gut. A guy plummets face-down from the top of a building, screaming the whole way. All amazing stuff.

This isn’t a particularly deep gangster flick, but the entertainment value is undeniable.

[through radio]
“Where are you guys?”
“Find the blood and the smoke. We’re there.”

Warfare is a small slice of a long, real-life horror story. This is not for the faint of heart or those with a weak stomach. It will undoubtedly be the most insanely anxious 90 minutes of cinema in 2025.

With an eye for detail and a lot of effort to reenact the real events correctly, this film seems to bring a lot more weight to it than an average war film. It’s uncomfortable and terrifying. Watching this, you will wonder how any film honestly depicting war can be construed as anything but anti-war. It’s gross, it’s bloody, it’s hell.  I saw some reviews suggesting this film was pro-war, and that notion is ludicrous.

There is no glory nor any crowd-pleasing moments to be found. However, there are certainly the irable characteristics of brotherhood between the soldiers, clearly showing that they had each other’s backs, and provided the and camaraderie that is necessary to stay sane in a war zone — and if that is the big reason why you think war is “glorified” here, I don’t know what to tell you.

This is a contained story, with little context given or needed with the Iraq War in recent memory. This unit is simply on a surveillance mission that goes very far south. For what it is, Warfare is masterfully done.

All-in-all an impressive achievement; both technically and thematically epic. The creativity exhibited is so fun, and the photography is nothing short of spellbinding. This wuxia adventure film is very different from act to act, but the story weaves everything together wonderfully.

A Touch of Zen is immensely under-seen on Letterboxd, and I can only guess it’s because of the runtime. Fair enough I suppose, but this film was originally released theatrically in two parts, so don’t feel terrible if you need to split it up over two awesome evenings.

This will end up being a guilty-pleasure film for lots of people (not for me); it’s bad in a crowd-pleasing way… it all just depends on if you care that it’s bad or not.

Overall, I didn’t find the story especially plausible or interesting. The actions of the characters kept me from totally feeling the stakes. The anxiety I felt was because of the awkward social situations (what, you have to change your mind and go back to your old table after you just asked to switch tables — how embarrassing!).

Being a contained story mostly taking place in a single location, they definitely leaned into some stylistic choices to keep things moving and interesting. Mostly, I was bothered by the too-frequent cuts from one character to another during a conversation.

Combine it all with a substantial amount of wooden, unrealistic acting, and the whole thing just failed to do much for me. Glad y’all had fun, though.

This remake of the 1981 Cold War spy thriller makes a great argument that a revenge story is infinitely more fun when the protagonist has physical abilities, and is more than just really, really smart. It isn’t that there is too much tech-talk, it’s that so much is contrived. The protagonist, just like the script, is calculated; leaving little room for error (in other words, you won’t find any plot twists here). There are few surprises, and I found my investment in the story fizzling towards the end.

We get a lot of the same, as Rami Malek tracks down each of the four perpetrators, one after the other. While moving through the rather procedural plot, he wrestles with complex things, such as the immense grief of losing a loved one, and the moral consequences of killing. These more profound subjects are left dangling, and only barely explored. Indeed, the end arrives, and I was left to wonder what exactly was said at all.

There are also several characters that don’t seem to have much of a purpose. This is yet another example of Hollywood horribly underutilizing Jon Bernthal. But, also, what was the point of Laurence Fishburn’s character? He didn’t add much to the film narratively, let alone thematically.

This remake first entered development in 2006, when the plan was to replace the Cold War bad guys with post-9/11 terrorists. In 2025 there are certainly bolder bad guys to choose from than the “safe” ones that we got.
