Dune: Part Two

2024

★★½

Huge disappointment.

Massive in scale and spectacle. Stunted in narrative thrust and character development.

A lot of frowny faces. I’m sad just thinking about the non-existent romantic tension.

We’re just told how to feel about these characters. Rarely shown.

Surprisingly bland. Villeneuve is afraid to be weird. This movie needs to be weird.

Obvious choices abound! “Oh, we have a new messiah!” Play some generic middle eastern music.

Zimmer score sucks. He’s a parody of himself at this point.

WAAAAANG! (Distorted guitar with toms)

I liking many of the performances in the first one. What happened? Who’s exceptional in this? Seydoux? For roughly 5 minutes acting beside a hack.

Who’s even good in this? Ferguson? Maybe?

Everyone is pretty underwhelming. Austin Butler is terrible. A joke of a “psychotic warlord killer”. A self serious charisma hole. Jared Leto’s Hollywood replacement.

We get this new “scary guy” in an arena to say “Here’s some z-level Gladiator shit in bad tv black & white.”

Gah.

I wrote this review in the Dune: Part Two’s janky editing style.

The worst Villeneuve.
Reminded me of the last Star Wars.

But keep giving him money. Because the spectacle is still awe inspiring.
