I need to watch this again because it might be 5 stars. A soundtrack for the ages. Mise en scène of youth and American suburban culture like a generational, anatomical cross-section. A bottle episode with no business whisking us away on a Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride into the human soul the way it does

The things that are corny or dated are like salt on a rich vein of expensive caramel they don’t make anymore. I sorta can’t believe how much this worked for me as a movie. Every single one of these kids deserves a bouquet of flowers; thunderous applause; a handshake; a hug. Also: old head Richard Vernon is lowkey a snack. So here’s the thing: a deep dark secret of mine is I can’t stand indie comedies. Just the idea of sitting there for 2 hours witnessing other human beings feel things, and experience the ups and downs of real life—laugh, cry, love, fight, forgive, grow— I hate all that. I’m a regular Graunch about it (graunch is when it’s baby Grinch but specifically, in the awful Jim Carrey version).

I’m a graunch about indie comedies because I have a big old heart and it feels things intensely and it’s just the worst. I shy away from/opt-out of literally just about any number of days of summer on the reg. But here we have an anomaly. An indie comedy that makes me feel relaxed and at home. And in a Hitchcockian twist: Earlybird made me laugh.

The story finds Michael (Josh Koopman), the owner of a theater (in what appears to be a regular old American borough by the sea), getting the rent raised on him. An Our Town fan at heart, Michael is being confronted with the reality Thornton Wilder and Shakespeare are bad for business. He’s torn between going over the cliff producing traditional plays with authenticity and finding some alternative way to keep the dream alive. (turns out: it will involve Cat War.)

Enter Sarah (Julie Pope). Transcending tired, underwritten manic-pixie tropes with the footholds of writer/director Martin Kaszubowski‘s deftly shaded character touches as her platform, Sarah feels like a human being in this. She’s a ive partner, but also a person with a job and a life who doesn’t patronize Michael or simply inspire him like a “next location” button in a James Bond movie. Her partner’s energy and concerns exist on the same plane as her rationality, aspirations, emotional needs, and we spend time with her, and with them, in a profoundly ordinary way. By ordinary I mean nuanced. By nuanced I mean: good.

When the couple engage in a heart to heart by the seaside after a bit of a conflict, her “Hey Mike” rings with a depth and authenticity fully tracking the emotional beats of their journey we’ve witnessed to that point. There is love, there is comion, there is frustration, dissatisfaction, hope and a depth of appreciation. Pope gives us all the colors of the rainbow in this one, and rather than a Crayola watercolor starter set, it’s my perferred tones: pastels who live immediately next door to titanium white. Dramatically coloring each emotional room with subtle specificity.

Watching their relationship paddle-ball was akin to experiencing the love story of two dear old friends you’re rooting for. Satisfying to watch a fleshed out, slice-of-life, ive relationship that’s clearly romantic, but never cloying. I liked hanging out with them. I like how they talked about their problems. I liked watching Sarah encourage Michael to cut loose, and cut loose he does…

Now, one thing I’ve never seen in an indie comedy is Cat War. Cat War is the reason I have a headache while writing this. I have a headache while writing this because I laughed about Cat War when I saw the words “Cat War” written on a stack of paper out of nowhere one scene. Cat War enters the film with a force second only to Nathan Lane introducing himself to Gene Hackman in The Birdcage. I laughed when Courtney (Chloe Skozen) first drops the Henry V rhetorical bombast of Cat War on us. I laughed witnessing Michael struggle to write a follow up to Cat War, and I laughed every time it came up for the rest of the runtime, and it comes up a fair amount. I’ll be honest with you here: I have to be careful not to think about Cat War too much now, or I will laugh more and get a worse headache and then I won’t be able to get to sleep and then I’ll be forced to lower my star rating for this film.

I won’t elaborate more about Cat War because I don’t want to put this review behind the letterboxd spoiler Darth Vader.

Anyway—-Cat War happens. People quitting happens, Michael gets put through the wringer and wears it all well. Koopman never strays maudlin or slapstick, rather there’s a headiness to his Michael that’s as relaxed as it is earnest. He’s always there. Whether mildly annoyed with a cast member, or genuinely languishing in clunky but doe-eyed appreciation for Sarah, he’s a guy who deeply cares, and we feel his attachment, and we see why everyone around him gives him the time of day. He’s a compelling leader, partly because he’s never standing on a platform inspiring the troops, in fact: he seems pretty lazy. But he’s always in the game with them. Their plight is his plight, and we get to see him fumble his way into rising to the occasion.

There’s some orchard tour tickets (that are the special, good, sought after type of orchard tour tickets), there’s a hotshot writer with an earring (Tom Reed in a scene stealing role that gave me strains of Henry Winkler chewing it up on Arrested Development). There’s some typical ups and downs, a bit of Julius Caesar (Koopman eating at physical comedy), and it all gets sequined onto the backdrop of one of the loveliest electronic scores I’ve heard in years.

Composer Scott Cary taps into the spectrum of emotion, and lighthearted warm orange-blues the production drops on us and nails the vibe of this struggling little theater that could, weaving itself effortlessly like vanilla lavender incense smoke amidst the fond camaraderie that measures the ensemble. Never once demanding “listen to me”; never a note feeling out of place. You could add an unlimited amount of this varietal of scoring to any movie and it would simply heighten the enjoyment. It feels fresh, and the themes that do wander in repeatedly throughout you could hear a hundred times and not tire of. Synth textures as sublime as the bokeh dipped lensing of cinematographer Spencer Ortega’s picaresque frames.

From tip to tail, an A+ night at the movies, and a character-driven indie gem with the sort of human romance you hope for from small town plucky theatre troupe hijinks. It’s got a 100:0 ratio of beats that made me smile to beats that made me roll my eyes. In the cynical, machine processed “isn’t that random?” lameness modern pop culture is often steeped in, Earlybird is a sachet of the rarest leaves, a cup of kindness, laughter, contentment. And well, I’ll be… if my little graunch heart didn’t grow three sizes while watching it.

Okay there’s something about this movie that I just hate. But it’s mostly watchable and at least imaginatively cringe. I originally saw it in theaters chaperoning some summer camp kids on a movie night. Hated it then, and for some reason watched it again just now and it wasn’t that bad. Who thought Dane DeHaan should be a movie star? That guy has one of the dumbest looking faces I’ve ever seen. What were we thinking. Nobody wants to look at somebody who looks like that as the lead of a feature length movie. Atrocious. The Rihanna character is weird, but not her fault and my goodness was this height of her powers. Too much of this looks like C-grade Avatar animation. Idk. This movie sucks but I’m okay with it.

Disney horror but transgressive in a pretty skincrawling way that borders on maybe irresponsible. That said, it’s an engrossing night at the movies with some better Shyamalany beats. McAvoy is undeniable. A heck of a tour de force solo show. Some really upsetting loose ends left hanging. M Night annoys me with the way he pulls punches, while touching on really unspeakably nasty stuff so gratuitously. I’d much rather see someone get deservingly domed by a shotgun than some of the disturbing images of menace he insists on presenting us (while always leaving the safety on in a signature edgeless way)

In high school I went away to boarding school for a couple years and didn’t have a consistent revenue stream or anything. I would occasionally shoplift (just necessities: beauty products from CVS, clothes from Marshall’s/Old Navy, and CDs from Walmart/Sam Goody). I realized at a certain point there were ways to finesse the operation so that, were someone to interrupt the acquisition process on the way out, you could charmingly assure your way past culpability. It just requires a clever premise and well-tuned context to give you plausible deniability. I don’t steal anymore, but I can easily intuit how Michael Bay uses similar tactics to get away with being a rotten-to-the bone misogynist

Incredibly French and remarkably satisfying. It does on purpose all the things Roger Moore Bond movies do by accident, while simultaneously being a truer-to-form formula spy caper. Looks GORGEOUS. Fight scenes are immaculate. Sort of a French 80s Indiana Jones but a lot hammier, fewer blockbuster-budget stunts, more self-aware, and similarly polished. what the fuck is going on with these accents and also everything else this is insane

^^ fragment of a review left in a draft on here, on the heels of the 15 min DNF watch

…Review part 2:

To be clear I have still not seen this whole movie, so I can’t and won’t speak on it as a whole. I picked up about 1/2 through after a brief explainer from Rocco what events had transpired thus far.

Man what an insane story. But also: Jared Leto is really good in this! Jared Leto: big but fun, intricate performance with great command of quirky speech patterns and personality. Also mind-altering make up. But what a delicious character performance (in a film with many; the leads not least of all). Jared Leto. Brilliant in a movie. Who woulda thought. Flabbergasting.

Anyway you could just watch this movie for that and the rest of the acting. Pure class.

a heavy-handed movie disguised as a lighthearted comedy, but hits everything it’s trying to do w verve. Def not very playful outside a few spirited introductory numbers. Choreography and production design are unbelievable. There are tiring moments, but the story’s metatextual awareness doesn’t cloy like a Thor: Love & Thunder or ironic “isn’t that random??” TV commercial.

Looks stunning. Put it on just to vibe while googling each of the old Barbie product releases referenced throughout and you could have a pretty good time. Made with tremendous care/attn to detail and I enjoyed the experience. Some of the character driven stuff is a bit eye roll-y, but Barbie’s resolution hits home in a way that made me forget about that and just feel moved. Absolutely insane bit people watched this and Oppenheimer back-2-back this summer. LUNACY. Ten stars to Greta, fantastic motion picture.

Impossibly nonsensical, but these people are: so hot, that key is: so fun, and ultimately: why not. Cruise looks old and bad here, but you ride off the uncut moxy. His ability to have sexual chemistry now matches his countenance. Speaking of countenances: no possible way Hayley’s cheekbones don’t puncture that mask. The Last Temptation of Christ 116f53 1988 - ★½ https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/acoppa/film/the-last-temptation-of-christ/ letterboxd-review-443358097 Wed, 13 Sep 2023 04:33:58 +1200 2023-09-12 No The Last Temptation of Christ 1988 1.5 11051 <![CDATA[

Here’s the thing: the music is good. The rest is a bunch of confused New Yorkers LARPing.

Biggest problem by far: you can’t make Christ this annoying.

Portraying Jesus as fully an incel cuck is a bold play, but it’s just so goddamn hard to watch a long ass dusty sandal flick with a lead character who is entirely vacant of charisma. All respect to Willem who was given a thankless, impossible task, and did his best. You can’t fix how this character was written, or the choice to do a biblical epic in “i’m walkin’ here”-face.

The only narrative propulsion comes from what you bring of *your own outside understanding of whom Jesus is* , an understanding this story claims upfront won’t be particularly relevant. I can’t suspend disbelief enough to feel like anyone would: follow this guy; listen to him; want to sleep with him. Jesus here is: a whining, irritating fucking mess.

John The Baptist as psycho commune leader/Pontius Pilate Stardust is kind of fun. But for real: this movie is so extremely everything Christians hate and feel uncomfortable about (while being so surface level about the bible that practically every line reads like either an edgelord cringeism or mormon-esque euphemism), that it seems almost like a false flag operation. In the 80s it might have felt sufficiently edgy and thought provoking, but today it plays more like a Dinesh Desouza conspiracy exposé “this is what liberal elites think Jesus and The Bible were like”

There’s nothing to connect to. It’s long as hell. It’s not enjoyable or thrilling. It’s brown dishwater of an unpleasant slog. There’s enough gorgeous costuming, makeup and cinematography to cut it into a banger of a trailer, but as a motion picture, I can’t imagine having less of a good time.

At one point Jesus makes himself a time-out circle in the wilderness like a kid self-imposing his own sad IEP and gets talked to by a few supernatural visions that all sound *exactly* like 3rd string Disney 2d animation henchmen

I like the part where Jesus pulls out his own heart like Frida Kahlo except: UNEARNED. This Jesus is not special. He is dull. Sorry Marty, sorry Paul: ya made an ego-driven clunker.

“Ey it’s me, Jesus. God talked to me in the desert and stuff”

Main temptation in this film is obv temptation to turn it off

I will never forget refreshing youtube the day a new installment was scheduled hoping it would appear. The Griffey-EMart regular season-playoffs run is so impossibly exciting and unforgettable you truly won’t be able to believe you’re watching notes on a spreadsheet. For me, proof mathematics is an emergent physical phenomenon of the universe. Baseball stories rule and Jon Bois is a revolutionary humanist.

Everything I ever hope for from a Michael Bay movie but never get. Score is amazing. Future tech is inspired and cool af. Watched the dubs bc I couldn’t figure out how to get to the original language on my aftermarket remote. Will rewatch with subs, but man, like 80x better than the disney Ghibli dubs. Cranston eats. Exposition heavy but it’s doesn’t get in the way of a genuinely suspenseful yarn. Immaculate world building I was invested so hard from the jump, tho never having read the source manga. Westworld owes visusal royalties. No one does cyberpunk body horror political thriller like Japanese story tellers 40 years removed from unprecedented evil of US atomic assault. this movie absolutely rips, and yes you should watch it

This may be the best-looking motion picture ever made.

-Peak Willem DaFoe
-Freshly minted elder statesman Ford
-fantastic interiors and dated tech
-a wonderful tense set piece
-James Earl Jones plays a guy named James

Superlatives aside, this is jingoistic, misogynistic, harmful dreck. Stories like this are slick lies that have perpetuated deeply evil notions in our culture, especially among men of a certain age. I don’t like it, I don’t endorse it, it made me uncomfortable to witness.

Clancy or screenwriter has a gift for satisfying attention to detail, Noyce has a wonderful aesthetic and mise en scene. There’s a way to watch this and it be fun. It does, however, require unplugging your soul from reality.

The real clear and present danger is the friends we made along the way

Goodness gracious I’ve missed you Wes. He’s never quite figured out how to make a 3rd act quite as masterful as the other 2/3rds, but just absolutely zero complaints about this gem. it feels FRESH. Effortless. Timeless. It’s coming from a sweet place or something, I don’t know. But I’m here for it and it’s amazing to have a director I’ve always liked and rooted for back in his best range of outcomes.

A miraculous little movie. 105 or whatever minutes of perfectly palleted delight, with sensitive performances and a snappy script that never wearies of itself. Money used so many fun ways. And when did Jason Schwartzman get, just, unbelievably hot?

oh mannnn this aged badly. I can do without the guys filming a movie/fighting in the jungle bit. Honestly Steve Coogan deserved his fate for that idea. Oh boy the RDJ stuff. Oh man. What are you guys doing. Still, laughing my ass off at Tom Cruise. It’s BIZARRE. Comedic turn of the century when he puts on Ludacris and—alongside sycophant assistant Bill Hader—tries to lather Matthew McConaughey into letting his fading superstar cartel-hostage client get violently murdered for insurance money. Who can really say for sure if this is bad. If it’s bad, it’s one of the worst movies ever made. But I think it’s probably fine. Some of it is good, though incredibly cringe and hard to watch. Drags along here and there. Outside of a Jay Baruchel is dating JLH punchline, not one woman in this entire movie

deeply, deeply weird. But it is funny, and original, and a full-blown night at the movies. Chock full of knowing gasps and elevated-sophomoric bits. There’s a certain basicness to the ensemble, but it’s more than made up for by the execution and everyone’s commitment to going as wacky/hard of Rs possible. It’s money on the screen. enjoyable. Prob a few of these guys’ finest performance, and Danny McBride is especially dialed in (and up). I get the feeling these guys kinda suck irl but I still sign off on this

This movie makes absolutely no sense, and it’s not even remotely funny, but on the plus side it’s unbelievably horny. 15 minutes in you’re on your 4th “Meanwhile…” story card, between vignettes that seem like filmed improv classes with people literally falling over for no reason. Technicolor looks incredible. Claudia Cardinale is impeccable. Honestly, one of the worst movies i’ve ever seen.

ps. It’s profoundly weird that the most oblique and cringe allusions to sex were considered whole entire jokes in and of themselves in early 1960s. It’s startling. Did I say it makes no sense and also that it’s spectacularly horny?
