Steve Harringtonβs review published on Letterboxd:
AUSTIN BUTLER AND REBECCA FERGUSON OSCAR CAMPAIGN BEGINS NOW!!!
I know itβs WAY too early for Oscars predications but it wouldnβt surprise me in the slightest (is it too presumptuous to say itβs almost expected??? π«£) if it gets a nomination for Best Casting*, no doubt getting nominated for numerous other categories too
(*however that new category is going to play out? apologies if Iβm incorrectly understanding it β my point being is itβs a FANTASTIC ensemble cast and everyone really gave such excellent performances!)
LOVED the cinematography - itβs so striking, especially in its use of scale and expansiveness, coupled with a stark but fitting colour palette. I canβt recall another recent movie Iβve seen that uses this sort of scale so impressively. Thereβs one particular jumping shot that comes on pretty early in the movie and as soon as I saw it, I knew that Denis was not fucking around with the cinematography and that we were really doing this π€
Pacing was also really good! The first act is maybe the tiniest bit slower than the second and third, but definitely not a detractor.
Hans Zimmerβs score was just top notch + the more intricate costuming was stunning β loved Princess Irulanβs costumes in particular
Many memorable lines, but these two stick out to me personally:
βThen what hope is there?β
βHope [?] We are Bene Gesserit. We donβt hope β we plan.β
βMay thy knife chip and shatterβ is a line that goes absolutely SO fucking hard omg
Let me also say Iβm not the biggest fan of Dune, compared to other films / franchises, cinematic universes, etc. Like yeah, weirdly, Iβm still ittedly not, even after seeing this movie and liking it β but I can definitely appreciate and respect it!!
Iβve tried reading the first book and itβs not quite hitting its stride yet for me, the first movie to me was also fine (I just there being so much β¦ sand lol and not really being as captivated by the first movie). My friends also loved this movie after seeing it, and it seems like quite a few Letterboxd reviewers do too β so going in, I was really hesitant.
but Iβm SO pleased that this movie is just so damn good, and that I feel a lot more appreciative of this second part compared to the first!!! I really felt this sense of βomg whatβs gonna happen nextβ when watching it, which doesnβt always happen with every movie!
The feeling I get after watching this movie is how I really wish I felt about Oppenheimer, especially in wanting to root for a heavyweight movie come awards season and really understanding the collective feeling that itβs a fantastic film, that sort of click or aha! moment. Film is obviously so subjective, but itβs also nice to watch a new release and engage in the excitement with others too π
