1. The Avengers

Firing on all cylinders - fun from start to finish. Hulk... smash...

  2. Iron Man

The beginning... ground zero... RDJ unleashes charisma bomb and everyone is devastated.

  3. Thor: Ragnarok
  4. Avengers: Infinity War
  5. Thor: The Dark World

I love Thor and one of the best ending action sequences since Monsters Inc.

  6. Doctor Strange

Might be shiny new toy syndrome but the most inventive MCU fun in a while - trippy.

  7. Captain America: Civil War

This one is already fading from memory.... might not last. Love spider-man and the airport fight. The ending is stronger than usual though Iron Man would never lose.

  8. Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Not a fan of the Winter Soldier himself but this one charges from one action set piece to another and rarely misteps.

  9. Iron Man 2

The ending is underwhelming (Black Window's scene should not overshadow the main action... and it does) but lots of humour and fun.

  10. Guardians of the Galaxy

Not a fan of the final dance or the Collector but otherwise a great action adventure.

Ah Luke, you wide-eyed impetuous lad! What adventures you'll have. May the Force be with you.

  2. The Empire Strikes Back

Han shoots first! Is there anything cooler than Solo firing on Darth Vader without hesitation when they first meet? That's epic.

  3. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

So much death and fuss over such a little thing... Darth Terminator will not be deterred!

  4. Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith

"You were the Chosen One!" the Jedi master screamed from high ground (the unbeatable offensive position).

  5. Return of the Jedi

Whatever weaknesses is overcome by "I am a Jedi. Like my father before me." ...fuck the ewoks though.

  6. Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Poe doesn't know who goes first, Finn makes friends, Rey will not hold hands and the Last Jedi waits for the last scene.

  7. Solo: A Star Wars Story

Han will always be cool... Lando loves capes... The Kessel Run... Droid resistance... Always shoot first!

  8. Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace

The Darth Maul fight is one of the greatest in the series but I'll never understand why the Jedis allow slavery in the universe.

  9. Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones

Lots of cool stuff (Yoda unleashed, sonic asteroid bombs, arena fight) undone by the stiffest, most awkward romance in movie history.

  10. Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Casino Hogwarts is a waste; Poe needs to chill, Leia does her Hondo-Mary Poppins act, Rey feels the conflict within her father... uh Kylo; Luke gets the brush off. Some great ideas... not so great editing or plotting.

Visions Of Light Movie List

  • Young Frankenstein

Luscious recreation of old Black & White horror... plus rrroling in ze hay!

  • The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Iceland looks fantastic and the DP soaks it all up.

  • Amélie

Paris is a magic place in Amelie's eyes and I can't disagree.

  • Snow Falling on Cedars

The story never quite engages but I've never forgot the images and photography of this Ethan Hawke mystery.

  • Miller's Crossing

One of my all time favorites - evoking The Conformist (which I could have listed as well) in all the right ways.

  • Doctor Zhivago

Not my favourite Lean but the images of Russian life and Julie Christie are top notch.

  • The Adventures of Robin Hood

Hello Technicolor my old friend. I've come to watch you again. This one just looks great and everyone pops on screen from Errol to Olivia to Basil.

  • The Double Life of Véronique

A dream? A vision? A delusion? Great film matched with a great look.

  • T-Men

The Ne Plus Ultra example of film noir photography - no one pushed the darkness this extreme until Gordon Willis for The Godfather.

  • Black Hawk Down

It's odd to film war and brutality this vividly but Ridley Scott's tale of a rescue gone wrong does look incredible.

Hitchcock is obviously one of the greats of cinema and does not need my two cents but I'm going to rank his works anyway (that's what we do here on Letterboxd).

I always think I haven't seen too much of his work but I've managed to dig into his late career stuff... now to tackle the middle period...

  1. North by Northwest

One of my all time favourites. Gets better with every viewing. Cary Grant is so effortlessly good in this.

  2. Psycho

I used to have the photoplay book of this movie and was obsessed with it. I know every frame of this film because of that.

  3. Rebecca

Watched more as an Oscar Best Picture winner than a Hitchcock but either way great entertainment... those curtains!

  4. The Birds

I didn't really like this one as a kid but I came to appreciate it with every viewing and think it's top notch (I feel it gets a little under-rated).

  5. Vertigo

The new number one movie of all time - I feel this one's reputation is a little high but how can I argue with every critic in the world. I think it's very good regardless - love the vertigo effect.

  6. The Lady Vanishes

An enjoyable early romp - light, fluffy and fun.

  7. Rear Window

More a technical achievement than narrative but I can't resist Grace Kelly - I'd break my leg for her as well.

  8. Notorious

Goddammit! Cary Grant AND Ingrid Bergman AND Claude Rains! You didn't need to be Hitchcock to make this cast work.

  9. To Catch a Thief

Another Grace Kelly role and again I'm smitten... I wish we had had another 5 years of movies before she was whisked away to be a princess.

  10. The 39 Steps

This is a great wrong man on the run oldie from Hitch. Some odd editing jump cuts (Donat suddenly at police headquarters after getting shot and then his escape) but fun.

The most successful surrealist? Looking at my ratings, I feel a re-appraisal is in order (Eraserhead and Lost Highway in particular). I do like that Twin Peaks bookends this list though.

  1. Twin Peaks

I don't normally add TV movies/shows to my rankings but quality trumps dogmatism in this case. Dale Cooper is one of the all-time great characters.

  2. Mulholland Drive
  3. The Straight Story

The James Bond Ranking Who Loved Me 1h4o4a https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/aaronthec/list/the-james-bond-ranking-who-loved-me/ letterboxd-list-87987 Wed, 6 Feb 2013 18:11:20 +1300 <![CDATA[

There seems to be a lot of confusion as to the best James Bond films, so I thought I'd clear it up.

Also used for re-watches for the FOR QUEEN AND COUNTRY: A BOND-A-THON Challenge.

  1. The Spy Who Loved Me

The first Bond film I saw in theatres (haven't missed one since) and instantly fell in love with this character. This still has everything I want in a Bond film: beautiful girls, cool hench man, great villain lair, fantastic stunts, and a great opening. That pre-credit scene perfectly sets the tone leading into one of the great theme songs (hey... Nobody does do it better ).

  2. From Russia with Love

I grew to appreciate Connery after the fact. I was introduced to Bond with Moore so this characterization took some getting used to. Having said that, this is a super cool entry and the closest to a realistic spy movie as Bond ever gets. Plus Tatiana is painfully beautiful.

  3. Tomorrow Never Dies

Lots of people dog on this one (weak villain and weak ending) but everything else works so well for me that I easily enjoy this one as the best of the Brosan's (my personal favourite Bond) and one the best overall. The car stunt in the parking lot and the motorcycle chase while handcuffed is great stuff.

  4. Casino Royale

This is Craig's first entry in the series and it's a doozy. Prior to Skyfall, I'd say this one had the best production values beyond the stunts (i.e. cinematography, direction, art direction). The opening pre-credits are cool and the construction scene chase is a highlight. I'm not sold on Craig as Bond but when the movie is this good that doesn't matter. Plus Eva Green's Vesper is my all-time favourite Bond girl.

  5. Goldfinger

The grand daddy template for Bond movies and the action/ adventure genre. Iconic doesn't even begin to do justice to Goldfinger: pimped out Aston Martin ; gold paint covered woman; "I expect you to die."; Oddjob, etc ,etc
I love this one for the sheer audacity and fun that I sense the fimmakers had creating the movie.

  6. GoldenEye

A strong debut for my favourite Bond actor. For my money, Brosnan brings the best balance of Roger Moore smooth & Sean Connery rough. I love his physicality during the action scenes and his dry wit when dealing with others (particularly with Q and M). There's also great villains (including a hench woman), cool stunts, and a kick ass tank chase through Moscow.

  7. For Your Eyes Only

This is the back-to-basics Bond follow-up that seemed to be the way to go after the outrageousness of Moonraker (which I think is a pretty good entry as well ). I loved the bait and switch of the Bond car chase and the colder interpretation Moore brings (cliff scene). The bond girl's eyebrows are mesmerizing and she fires a mean crossbow - pretty cool. Too bad about the hockey game sound effects but nobody's perfect.

  8. You Only Live Twice

As a reviewer once said: Ken Adams, Ken Adams, Ken Adams. This one's a winner if only for that incredible volcano set. When a Bond film ends with dozens of ninjas dropping down from the ceiling to fight dozens of goons, you got a great Bond. The Sean Connery as a japanese fisherman doesn't work but it's a minor part of the story. What is a step up from previous Bonds (to this point) is the camerawork - exciting and used very effectively during the action scenes: particularly a rooftop chase and the Little Nellie fight ("Four big shots made improper advances toward her, but she defended her honor with great success.").

  9. The Living Daylights

This one has the dour mister Dalton giving the most accurate characterization yet of the James Bond from the novels. While I think that Dalton did succeed on that level, I also realized that I don't like the book Bond in my movie Bond. This movie still works though mainly because of Dalton's interactions with Maryam D'Abo's Kara (for my money one of the most beautiful Bond girls). Similar to how Vesper gave some lightness and fun to Craig's Bond in Casino Royale, Kara gives Dalton's version of Bond some much needed humour. The pre-credits scene is great and the action is pretty solid - I especially love the snow chase (missiles + truck = awesome) and the back of the plane fight on the netting. I'm still not sure why Bond didn't run into Rambo while in Afghanistan but that's a mystery for another day.

  10. Skyfall

This one has exploded and brought Bond back into the popular culture spotlight like I've never seen. I think you have to go back to the heady days of Goldfinger-Thunderball to find comparable worldwide box office success. Amazing. The movie itself is very strong and I would say the best looking Bond film (incredible cinematography). My only real problems with Skyfall are the lack of a good Bond girl (one's a punch line, the other one's pretty useless narratively) and Craig himself (great action star, lousy Bond) - I just can't get behind his protrayal. Javier Barden though is a great villain with one of the all time great introductions. I love it when movies tease a character's entrance and then the movie delivers. The action is rock solid with an exciting pre-credit chase and a great theme song. An easy top ten Bond (might move up higher upon subsequent viewings).

I never saw movies later on like the ones I saw when I was twelve List 4i204p https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/aaronthec/list/i-never-saw-movies-later-on-like-the-ones/ letterboxd-list-1125565 Sat, 6 Aug 2016 06:51:25 +1200 <![CDATA[

Inspired by the Stand By Me (30th anniversary) quote "I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus does anyone?", this is a list of movies that affected me when I was a wee lad of 12 (1979-80 so there may be some overlap +/- 6 months as well)
All of them seen in the theatre except for the few TV movies I included.

  • Being There

I think this was at the Place de Ville or Capital Square cinemas. I don't think I "got it" completely at the time but there was something odd and adult about Being There that fascinated me. Now I think it's genius - then it was a bit scary.

  • Agatha

I saw this and Mirror Crack'd mostly because my parents were deep into Agatha Christie novels so I soaked up an interest - I mostly nudity in a bath house or spa...

  • Moonraker

A new Bond is always a holy time and Moonraker combined Star Wars with James Bond! Forget about it! I loved this with every fiber of my being - I know it's not the best but at 12... this was the shit.

  • Kramer vs. Kramer

I fricken cried at this movie - big 12 year tears! Specifically when Dustin loses his job. The humiliation of seeing a dad beg was too much for me. I did really like the movie and felt it was pretty even-handed (you would think the mom would normally be portrayed as the anti-Christ to leave her son)

  • Buck Rogers in the 25th Century

The TV show started with a pilot TV movie and I like BG I thought it was cool to be able to see sci-fi on the tube. Not as good as Galactica but I liked Gil Gerald's Buck Rogers and of course had very confusing pre-teen thoughts about Erin Grey.

  • The Muppet Movie

This was right on the edge of acceptability to watch (see Apple Dumpling Gang) though the Muppets at the time were more edgy (?). The Muppet Show was definitely cool even if Muppets may not have been (that made sense at 12). However, this movie is so good that I loved it unreservedly. The songs were great, the effect of Kermit riding a bike was well done, it was funny and zipped along nicely. I don't think the cameos would make as much sense to today's audience though (who's Dom DeLuise, Telly who?). Luckily Madeline Khan is eternal.

  • The Electric Horseman

Another one of the "grownup" movies I saw - as if a 12 year old seeks out Robert Redford and Jane Fonda movies. I loved westerns though so I was somewhat tricked into this one but I liking it anyway. I especially like the look of the electric horseman - so many lights!

  • The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again

This is one of the last of these types of live action Disney movies I would have seen at this time. I was just making the transition from watching these "kiddy" movies to "real" movies (early snob reaction). Having said all that though, Don Knotts is always a guaranteed good time.

  • The Frisco Kid

I saw this for a couple of reasons: number one reason - Harrison; number two reason: Ford. Plus it was a western, plus it had Gene Wilder. I was all in. It's too bad the movie was not very funny (I didn't need good, just funny would do). I still wonder if I should re-watch. I believe this was a Drive-In movie but don't recall the other film (maybe Apple Dumpling).

  • The Jerk

This comedy classic (yeah, why not) was my first real introduction to Steve Martin (who I love still). He as in the zeitgeist of the era but I wasn't into his comedy albums and didn't really connect him as a SNL player (though Two Wild and Crazy guys was a favourite skit). This movie though had me rolling in stitches from the sharecropper home (I had no idea what that was) to the defective oil cans to the fantastic Bernadette Peters to the opti-grab. Everyone imitated Martin's "I don't need anything... except this <insert item>" scene and all the 12 year olds laughed at Iron Balls McGinty. A fan for life.

These movies contain or represent the things in a movie that are in my wheelhouse. That is: I'm going to love this element no matter what how bad the film is.
I may add more as they come to me.

  • The Conformist

Ceiling fans and blinds. I'm a sucker for style and the effect of light streaming from blinds or broken up by a rotating ceiling fan are too delicious to resist. Bonus points if the fan is used to kill the bad guy (I don't recall a death by blinds scene).

  • Runaway Train

Running or fighting on top of trains. Low bridges, unaware engers, a few toughs fighting it out on top of a speeding train? I'm in heaven.

  • The Hunt for Red October

I can't resist a submarine setting - love 'em. From Das Boot to K-19, I love subs! Also can apply to other sub-like situations like Wrath of Khan or The Abyss.

  • Back to the Future

Forgive the crudity of the model. I love it when people are planning and have some diorama representing the target (bank, city, Castle, whatever). The rougher the model, the better.

  • Rocky II

Inspirational word or short phrase. This is an easy win in my book. Like narration, it can be hard to pinpoint and mileage will vary but I'm thinking Arian's "Win" from Rocky II, or the manager's "Let's win the whole fucking thing" from Major League. In fact the best ones include the word "Fuck"... "Fucking A bubba" from The Right Stuff or "Fuck the bonus" from Wanted: Dead or Alive.

  • Gravity

Alone alone alone... one lonely person trying to survive. This is the Cast Away, Gravity, Martian type of film.

  • Ocean's Eleven

The heist movie is great since it usually combines a few favourite elements in one film: the team, the procedural, the diorama, sometimes an enclosed space....

  • The Royal Tenenbaums

Ironic narration. There's some flexibility for this one but generally if I get the sense the narrator is commenting ironically on the scene or is outright hostile to the protagonist them i'm in. From Barry Lyndon to Goodfellas to Raising Arizona, this works for me.

  • The Edge

Survival in nature. A variation on "alone, alone, alone" but specifically against animals as well as the environment. Can be a group of people trying to survive - if it includes elements of professionalism then all the better.

  • Diamonds Are Forever

Fight in a contained space. Captain America Winter Soldier had an example in the elevator (actually they usually are in an elevator). I love it when the environment is such a immediate and confining factor.

This ordered list is for theatrical films only (no HBO or direct to DVD). I reserve the right to make exceptions.

  1. Argo

Affleck is the real deal and Argo has the feel of a master story teller working on all cylinders. Funny, suspenseful, dramatic, exciting - Argo had me enthralled from the first sight of the retro Warner's logo to the quiet pan of a little boy's room. Equal parts adventure and love letter to the art of movie making, this is great stuff.

  2. Django Unchained

A little messy and all over the place but also more inventive and narratively exciting that most movies have a right to be. Christof Waltz is a fantastic muse for Tarantino (better than Uma?) - able to bring the dialog to life in a musical, poetic sense. Foxx, DiCaprio, Jackson, et al, all bring their A game to this film but it's Tarantino's world from frame one. When he's this good, he can be messy and get aways with it.

  3. Silver Linings Playbook

This really shouldn't work as well as it does. Weird tonal shifts, juggling redemptions stories, football AND ballroom dancing? And yet SLP is a charming, hilarious and moving story of damaged people hanging onto what they have and making the best of it. Best scene: Lawrence owning DeNiro when she explains what the true jinx is.

  4. The Avengers

This is just pure fun. I will it to not having that much faith in Josyh Weadon - always love his writing & dialog but didn't think much of him in the director's chair. The Avengers though is top notch hollywood action adventure. It's clear throwback to the spirit of the movies I loved as a kid: Sinbad, Star Wars, Raiders, Superman, etc. This is a mastercraft of how to bring such disparate elements seamlessly into one film. Great stuff.

  5. The Master

The P.T. Anderson film may move up in years to come - I can't stop rolling this movie in my mind about what it means. At this point though, it's a little inscrutable to place higher. The acting is top notch: Joquin in particular creates and performs at such a high level that I am in awe. The first interview scene with Hoffman is a masterclass of two actors at the very top of their game. This is also a beautiful looking film with amazing composition and imagery. I'll be thinking about this one for a long time I suspect.

  6. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Frankly, I'm surprised I enjoyed this as much as I did. I'm a huge Jackson LotR fan and after the initial mediocre reviews, I was expected a disappointment. Nothing could be further from the truth: Peter Jackson just cannot go wrong in the Tolkien universe. Everything from the casting to the pacing to the expanded material drew me in just as the previous trilogy done. I am very excited to see the next two installements.

  7. Les Misérables

I cried ok. You happy? Every damn time Hathaway was on screen I was either fighting the tears, or holding them back or letting them stream. I can't ignore a movie that works on me like that. It helps that I love this musical and the songs. Tom Hooper's genius of tight close ups works beautiful in this context - this is what the movie can do that the stage cannot: bring us face to face with the characters. This is a big epic movie melodrama and sometimes you just have to give in.

  8. Lincoln
  9. Moonrise Kingdom
  10. The Grey
