SNOW WHAT? (2025) — I sat down to watch this film thinking it was probably just overhated because of the casting, and that it couldn’t really be that bad. I mean, it's a remake of a classic, so I figured they wouldn’t stray too far from the original. I was wrong. This movie is underhated and borderline unwatchable.

It's a complete mockery and disrespectful parody of the original classic. The film’s core message and purpose have been entirely altered — so much so that this can’t even be called a remake anymore. The characters' personalities are the exact opposite of the originals, stripping away everything that made them iconic.

The acting is terrible and laughable. I don’t think I’ve ever seen facial expressions so forced and irritating in a film. Snow White’s character came across as aggressive rather than innocent or kind. As for Gal Gadot… just hand her an Oscar already — I’ll leave it at that.

The CGI was awful — completely unrealistic and visually jarring. But my favorite aspect? Dopey turned out to be the smartest character in the entire movie, and by the end, he was speaking better than anyone else. I LOVED THAT. *skull emoji*

FINAL DESTINATION 6 (2025) – I finally got around to watching the iconic Final Destination movies, especially since I knew the long-awaited Bloodlines was dropping this year. This franchise is one of the most chaotic and unserious horror universes out there, but that early 2000s Y2K charm in the first five films made them iconic.

Bloodlines sures all previous entries in of quality — the visuals are hands down the best in the series. But maybe that’s also why it loses some of that classic Y2K teen horror vibe that defined the earlier films. Still, the opening scene at the Skyview Restaurant Tower is easily my favorite premonition/vision out of all six movies — absolutely atmospheric and visually stunning. The camera work, the music, the outfits… honestly, I wouldn’t have minded if the whole film just focused on young Iris. Brec Bassinger absolutely nailed her role, instantly becoming one of the franchise’s best characters.

After Iris’s vision, the story jumps to the present where things really unfold. The characters were engaging, and the plot had a new level of depth and seriousness that made it stand out from the rest of the series. In fact, I think this movie has the best storyline in the entire franchise — it really ties everything together in a meaningful way. To me, this feels like a perfect conclusion to the Final Destination saga. I don't think it needs another sequel — unless it's more stories from the bloodline, told in a style similar to the early films.

As a whole, Bloodlines is nearly perfect. But the one thing that holds it back from being a full 5-star film for me? The deaths. Most of them were predictable, and none really felt as iconic or memorable as the ones in parts 2 and 3 or even 5. The film took itself a little too seriously in places where it could’ve leaned into the camp or cliché — and that’s part of what made the older movies so fun.

Tony Todd’s final return was an iconic moment. His presence throughout the franchise finally made complete sense, and this was a respectful, emotional goodbye — not just to the series, but to the fans as well. Rest in peace to the legend.

Bloodlines is a fantastic horror entry that brings the fun back to the genre and expands a franchise many of us thought was long dead. It’s 2025’s biggest surprise, proving that it is possible to reboot an iconic series the right way — without disrespecting or overshadowing the original classics.

RODAN (1956)Rodan is Toho’s first kaiju film in color and honestly, it makes a huge difference in how enjoyable it is. I really like that during the Showa era, Godzilla’s future rivals were given their own solo films. It makes their backstories and origins way easier to understand and appreciate. Rodan’s movie is a pretty straightforward kaiju flick with a simple plot — but honestly, that’s kind of all it needs to be. The monster effects and cinematography are surprisingly solid for a film that’s almost 70 years old, and the city destruction scenes actually hold up really well visually. I’m excited to check out the rest of the solo kaiju movies — hopefully, they’ll keep this more serious tone too.

GODZILLA RAIDS AGAIN (1955) — The direct sequel to the iconic 1954 original, and officially the first entry of the Showa era. Godzilla Raids Again is a classic in kaiju battle history, as it marks the first time Godzilla ever faced off against another monster on screen — Anguirus. This film is a quick follow-up that, unfortunately, falls short of its predecessor in pretty much every way. While the core idea behind the story is solid, the film doesn’t recapture the same haunting, oppressive atmosphere that made the original so powerful. Anguirus's role isn’t really explained, and his fight with Godzilla leans more towards awkward than epic. Still, it’s an enjoyable watch at least once, especially for fans of the genre. And if the rumors are true — that the Minus One sequel is going to reimagine this story in a more serious and grounded way, then I’m seriously intrigued to see where they take it!

[22/60] — Godzilla & Friends Marathon

GODZILLA (1954) — Toho’s legendary film is arguably the most important monster movie ever made. It laid the foundation for entire genres that modern cinema simply wouldn’t be the same without. Even after 70 years, Godzilla remains the darkest and most haunting entry in the entire franchise.

Its grim black-and-white visuals still hold up today, turning the movie into a true horror drama. At its core, Godzilla is a metaphor — Godzilla represents war, bringing suffering and death to ordinary people. What Toho achieved with this film has rarely been matched since: a true portrayal of fear, destruction, and the human toll of catastrophe.

Godzilla’s design is grotesque and terrifying, and honestly, it’s one of the best versions ever made — especially when you that everything here was done with practical effects. The film introduced iconic elements that have become staples of the franchise: the Oxygen Destroyer, the atomic breath, Dr. Serizawa, the political drama, the moral dilemmas… it all started here.

When it comes to Godzilla films, Japan does it best. For me, the perfect trilogy is Gojira, Shin Godzilla, and Minus One — three chilling, intense films with real messages beneath the surface. These aren’t just monster flicks — they’re powerful, emotionally resonant stories. This is what Godzilla should be: a metaphor for death.

SON OF KONG (1933) — The legendary King Kong’s sequel feels more like a fan-made story than a serious follow-up to the iconic original. That said, Son of Kong with its short runtime is still an enjoyable watch that tells a simple, straightforward story. We return to Skull Island, where once again we’re treated to dinosaurs and giant creatures. The setting is beautifully crafted here too, and considering this film is over 90 years old, the camerawork is honestly impressive. EMILIA PÉREZ (2024)BINGO! I had to watch this film a second time to truly form my opinion on it. First and foremost, I evaluate movies for what they are, and in this case, I separate the art from the artist — especially since, aside from Selena, I don’t really know any of the actors beyond their work. Plus, as a European, I don’t feel qualified to take a stance on cultural matters that aren’t my own. That said, I completely understand the criticisms and why some people found this film offensive, but my take is purely from a cinematic perspective.

Honestly, all the backlash and negative reviews initially made me hesitant to watch it. Winning so many awards and even getting Oscar buzz, I assumed it was all just industry politics, and there was no way this film could actually be good. Turns out, I was wrong. Emilia Pérez is a truly unique film — so much so that I can’t even put it into a single genre. It’s a mix of drama, musical, comedy, thriller, crime, political commentary and arthouse all rolled into one.

I went in completely blind, knowing nothing about the plot or how it would unfold, which made the experience even better. Despite its 2+ hour runtime, I wasn’t bored for a second. The film kicks off with lawyer Rita Mora Castro, played by blockbuster queen Zoe Saldana, and immediately highlights a political — or rather, human rights—issue. Rita is a highly skilled lawyer who does her job flawlessly, yet she constantly faces discrimination based on her gender and race, making her achievements feel undervalued.

I have to it, the scene switches between serious crime drama and sudden musical parts threw me off at first. The songs themselves were… weird? Not exactly something you’d listen to on their own, but I think that was an artistic choice. The way the entire setting changed during the songs, with full-on choreography, gave the film a theatrical vibe. Eventually, I got used to it, and surprisingly, despite not being a fan of musicals at all, I actually enjoyed this one.

One of the key moments in the film is the meeting between Manitas and Rita. This powerful drug lord asks her for something pretty shocking: he wants to become a woman, and in return, he’ll make Rita rich. What’s fascinating is the psychology behind their conversation — two people who are extremely competent at what they do, yet both feel unfulfilled in life. The chemistry between them is very visible from the start. Deep down, I don’t think Rita helps Manitas just for the money; she understands his internal struggle because she’s dealing with her own. By the end of the first act, Manitas has achieved his dream and is reborn as Emilia Pérez, while Rita also gets her well-earned reward. But while Emilia seems happy, Rita’s expression still shows that money alone hasn’t truly fulfilled her.

The second act jumps four years ahead, flipping their situations entirely. Now, Rita is living a carefree life, while Emilia realizes she can’t be fully happy without her children. The infamous dinner scene, where Emilia confronts Rita in her new form, is hands down one of the film’s best moments in of acting and tension. The fear on Rita’s face is contagious — what if Manitas is still lurking behind this new body? But instead of a threat, Emilia approaches her as a friend, and from here on, her character arc takes a completely positive turn.

Another interesting character is Jessi, played by Selena Gomez. At first glance, she seems like a villain, but when you consider that she’s spent her whole life trapped in a luxurious prison built on lies, with only her children as her anchor, her “bad” decisions suddenly make a lot more sense. If Emilia’s struggle is identity and Rita’s is finding purpose, then Sofi’s tragedy is her desperate search for freedom. Selena got a lot of hate for this role, but I think it was undeserved. Sure, she’s not on the same level as some of her co-stars, but she still gave a solid performance. It’s nice to see her taking on more serious roles and gradually building her filmography.

What makes Emilia Pérez so strong is how perfectly it balances all the genres it embraces. At its core, it’s a drama, but it also has comedic moments — not through forced jokes, but thanks to stellar acting that naturally brings a smile to your face. Karla Sofía Gascón was phenomenal in this role. One of the funniest moments for me was Emilia’s first meeting with Epifanía. There were also hilarious little moments between Rita and Emilia (like the dress compliment at the gala dinner). Their relationship evolves from a business deal that began with a kidnapping into something much deeper — they become the most important person in each other’s lives, working together not just for money but out of genuine care. Their bond was, in my opinion, the heart of the film.

At times, the film was frustrating (in a good way). As an outsider, some decisions felt so obviously avoidable, yet they weren’t made. Many of the conversations between Emilia and Jessi were exactly like that — if Emilia had just been honest instead of having a meltdown, the entire tragedy could have been prevented. But on the other hand, their situation is so far from normal that it’s impossible to judge their choices rationally. The constant tension kept the film from ever feeling dull.

The third and final act is where everything comes to a head. Emilia’s kidnapping shifts the film into an even darker, more intense tone. The last few scenes are an emotional rollercoaster. For a moment, you believe Rita’s plan is going to work, that she’ll successfully rescue Emilia. But then Jessi’s men spot the armed figures hiding behind the hill, and chaos erupts. Just as we get a glimmer of hope — Emilia revealing her true self to Jessi, who seems to show mercy — Gustavo refuses to back down.

The car scene was another emotional gut punch. One second, you think Jessi has stopped Gustavo; the next, they’re falling into the abyss. At that moment, I still held onto a tiny hope — maybe Emilia, locked in the trunk, could somehow survive the crash. But then… BOOM. Our protagonist dies in a way that was completely preventable if only a few small choices had been made differently. Yet, somehow, the ending still feels like a tragic resolution. Rita finds purpose in running Emilia’s business and caring for her children. The world re Emilia as a good person who tried to make a difference. This is the kind of film that lingers in your mind, one that could be endlessly analyzed from a psychological perspective. Despite its deeply personal story, its themes feel universally relatable.

Emilia Pérez is divisive, and its unique style isn’t for everyone — I completely understand why some people, maybe even the majority, didn’t connect with it. But for me, that doesn’t change the fact that this film is absolutely brilliant. It stands out from the crowd, showcasing a cinematic style I’ve never seen before. It proves that great films can be made by breaking conventions and embracing something entirely different. BINGO!

KING KONG (1933) — The legendary King Kong was the first majorly successful monster film, a groundbreaking piece of cinema that paved the way for the entire genre. Of course, we’re talking about an almost 100-year-old movie — its age shows not only in the black-and-white visuals but also in the overly dramatic acting style typical of that era. Yet, despite all this, I still found it incredibly entertaining, and not a single scene looked bad in any way.

I absolutely love jungle adventure films, and unsurprisingly, that was my favorite part here as well. The environment was beautifully crafted, and honestly, if they ever released a fully remastered, upscaled color version, this film could still hold its own today. It’s crazy how well they executed the movement of the creatures! Kong’s iconic design is something everyone recognizes, but I also have to give major props to the dinosaur models. Even though they’re nearly a century old, they look more accurate and detailed than what some modern films manage to pull off.

This movie is a true adventure classic, a film that laid the foundation for so many genres and essentially helped shape today’s blockbuster franchises. And after all these years, Kong is still the king!

[19/60] — Godzilla & Friends Marathon

GODZILLA: FINAL WARS (2004) — This film was released for the 50th anniversary of the King of the Monsters, and wow — what a celebration! Without a doubt, this is the most chaotic and unique Godzilla movie I’ve ever seen. It’s a film that blends the characteristics of all its predecessors while also being a full-on early 2000s blockbuster. You can take it even less seriously than the other Millennium era entries—this is just pure fun, an over-the-top, action-packed kaiju spectacle.

The movie kicks off with Godzilla imprisoned, allowing the plot to unfold without him for a while. This is where we meet Captain Gordon, played by Don Frye, who is the biggest badass in the movie. The guy doesn’t miss a single chance to throw in some dad-joke-level one-liners! We’re also introduced to the Earth Defense Force, our over-the-top action heroes who perfectly embody the extreme blockbuster vibes of the 2000s.

Then there’s Gigan — finally making his return after being absent in both the Heisei and Millennium eras! I loved the scene where they examine this 12,000 year old alien lifeform. But once the intro is over, the kaiju attack everywhere (finally, destruction outside of Tokyo!). One of my favorite moments is Rodan soaring over New York City, wings spread wide after taking down a few skyscrapers—iconic. The bigger budget was well deserved and shows in every frame! I was also super excited to see Anguirus — one of my all-time favorites! The film’s fight choreography is fantastic, and it really shines in that Ebirah scene. The CGI is so early 2000s, but honestly, that’s one of my biggest guilty pleasures about this movie. And of course, we have to talk about Minilla. His expressions, his shy personality— he’s hilarious. In a movie this chaotic, he was the least of its problems!

But before I get into Godzilla’s rampage, I have to mention the Xiliens. As much as I love the idea of an alien invasion plot, I feel like it was a bit too emphasized, sometimes even overshadowing Godzilla himself. But despite that, I adored the entire Y2K aesthetic — from the Xilien spaceship to their outfits. Special shoutout to Miyuki’s red latex coat, which totally reminded me of Resident Evil — an absolute fashion moment!

Then comes Godzilla’s escape, and the action dials up even more. This version of Godzilla is feral, aggressive, and completely unhinged — I LOVE IT! His fight with Gigan and the way he just rushes into battle with the other kaiju are some of the film’s biggest highlights. But let’s talk about the most important scene in cinematic history (okay, maybe a tiny exaggeration): Godzilla vs. Zilla. Zilla makes a comeback on the big screen and I have to thank Toho for giving us this absolute gem of a moment. The real King of the Monsters annihilates the “tuna-eating lizard” in mere seconds — legendary.

The fight with Kumonga, King Caesar, and Anguirus had me dying with laughter — pure Showa-era ridiculousness revived! But then, the final battle shifts the tone back to serious, and wow — what a showdown. The crater left by the meteor sets the stage for one of the most visually stunning fights in the movie. Godzilla standing in the ruins, waiting for his final opponents.. Chills. And Monster X’s dramatic entrance was just incredible. And then comes the grand finale: Godzilla, Ghidorah, and Mothra — three of Toho’s biggest icons going head-to-head. Mothra gets buffed, which I loved, and Ghidorah’s Keizer form might just be his best on-screen appearance. But of course, Godzilla proves why he’s the real King — effortlessly melting Keizer Ghidorah’s heads with his atomic breath. Just for this fight alone, the movie deserves a 10/10. Finally, Minilla stopping Godzilla’s rampage marks the end of an era. Godzilla finally finds a purpose beyond destruction, and the Earth is safe once more.

All in all, I don’t think it’s possible to hate this movie. Sure, if you look at it critically, it has flaws. But that’s not the point. This was never meant to be a serious drama — it was meant to be a celebration of 50 years of kaiju history, packed with non-stop action and every major monster making an appearance. I’m glad that, 20 years later, more people have come to appreciate this movie — Toho’s biggest box-office failure at the time. I’ll always love this film, and to me, it perfectly encapsulates those 50 years and all the movies that led up to it.

GODZILLA: TOKYO S.O.S. (2003)Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. is a Millennium-era Mechagodzilla sequel that actually sures its predecessor. While it doesn’t bring a lot of new ideas to the table and still doesn’t quite reach the heights of most Heisei films, its stunning visuals make up for it completely. I really liked that Mothra returned for the conclusion of this story and what a return it was. Not only did we get to hear her iconic song, but her battle with Godzilla was absolutely beautiful. It’s incredible how the filmmakers managed to create such breathtaking kaiju action using mostly practical effects. Godzilla’s atomic breath in this film looks better than ever, and his movement and destruction sequences are just as impressive. Mechagodzilla, on the other hand, still didn’t feel all that compelling to me. His design and fighting style were great, but that’s about all I can say. At the end of the day, this short blockbuster accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do — it entertains, without needing any deep message or heavy themes.

[16/60] — Godzilla & Friends Marathon

GMK: GIANT MONSTERS ALL-OUT ATTACK (2001) — I almost forgot just how good this movie is — an action-packed, kaiju-filled masterpiece! Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack easily has the best concept of the Millennium era. The human characters are well-handled, and the film never gets bogged down with excessive drama. Visually, I’d even say it’s one of the most impressive Godzilla movies ever made.

I absolutely loved the mythological “Guardian Monsters” concept and the way Godzilla is portrayed as an almost undead force of destruction. Millennium-era Godzilla designs are some of my favorites, and while I still prefer the early ones, GMK’s version is right up there. His white, pupil-less eyes and absolutely devastating atomic breath make him one of the most terrifying incarnations of Godzilla ever.

The first Guardian Monster we meet is Baragon, who is honestly adorable — maybe a little too adorable, which slightly takes away from the film’s serious tone. That said, his fight with Godzilla is beautifully shot, and Toho did a fantastic job with the cinematography. The moment where Godzilla looms over the hill is a direct homage to the 1954 classic, which is always a huge plus in my book.

The final battle takes place at night — something I always love in kaiju films. Here, we see Toho’s three most legendary monsters. Mothra’s design is a clear improvement over the Heisei era’s plush-like version, and even her CGI model looks decent. The whole fight reminded me a lot of Godzilla: KOTM except with the roles reversed — this time, Godzilla is the villain and Ghidorah is the Earth's defender. One of the coolest things about this Godzilla marathon is seeing where my favorite modern films drew inspiration from.

Mothra’s sacrifice and Ghidorah’s ascension were the absolute highlights of the film for me. The scene where the thousand-year-old golden dragon spreads his wings and takes flight is breathtaking. This movie is pure kaiju fun — it’s not too serious, but also not too childish. You just sit back and enjoy watching these massive monsters battle it out.

I’m honestly disappointed that this film never got a sequel in the Millennium era. The Guardian Monster concept was so creative, and I feel like there was still a lot of untapped potential there.

THE ELECTRIC STATE (2025) — A near-perfect concept, completely undercut by forced humor and unnecessary jokes. The Electric State looks at first glance like a flawless cyberpunk blockbuster, packed with all the elements that should in theory, work. With a massive $320 million budget, you’d expect this to be one of 2025’s biggest cinematic giants — but it’s not.

Visually, the film is stunning. The robots are beautifully designed and treated as equally important characters alongside the humans. The story itself is intriguing and far from cliché. The casting? Perfect for a blockbuster — Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt.. What more could you ask for? But then there’s the film’s biggest flaw: its tone. The Electric State tries to be both a serious cyberpunk drama and a family-friendly comedy at the same time — it just doesn’t work. I couldn’t take a single scene seriously. If the film weren’t so visually impressive, I might not have even finished it. It feels like it was ultimately made for kids, which wouldn’t be a problem — except they chose to adapt a serious story in this style.

With such an insane budget, this movie had the potential to be so much better. That being said, it’s not as bad as the internet hate train makes it out to be. It’s just a one-time watch — forgettable, but not awful. A film that comes and goes.

GODZILLA VS. MEGAGUIRUS (2000) — The second installment of the Millennium era is a truly goofy kaiju film, designed purely for entertainment. I’ll it, this one didn’t win me over as much as Godzilla 2000 or most of the Heisei era films, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a well-made movie.

I was really happy to see that they kept the pink-spiked Godzilla design from the previous film — it’s easily one of my favorites in Toho’s history. The visual effects also didn’t feel rushed or sloppy. The scenes where Godzilla swims, cutting through the ocean with his dorsal plates, were the highlights of the film for me. They did an amazing job with those shots!

Megaguirus’ design was also well-executed, and its flight sequences looked solid. Surprisingly, my favorite fight scene wasn’t the final boss battle but rather the one between Godzilla and the swarm of Meganulas. I actually enjoyed that sequence more than the final showdown. The last fight felt less grand and intense compared to what I’m used to — it leaned more into a goofy, Showa era vibe rather than the epic scale of past films.

One of my favorite things about rewatching older Japanese Godzilla films is noticing the moments that later movies took inspiration from. Kiriko’s final aerial attack immediately reminded me of the climactic battle in Godzilla Minus One. Her character also had shades of Shikishima, as both were driven by personal tragedy in their mission to stop Godzilla.

Overall, this was another fun entry in the franchise — less intense or nerve-wracking than some others, but definitely an enjoyable ride that left me smiling.

[14/60] — Godzilla & Friends Marathon

GODZILLA 2000: MILLENIUM (1999) — This movie marks the beginning of a new era for Toho’s biggest franchise. After the interconnected storyline of the Heisei era, the Millennium era shifts towards standalone Godzilla stories. I’ll it, when I first watched Godzilla 2000, it didn’t quite win me over like the iconic Heisei films did. But on this rewatch, I had an absolute blast with it.

Right away, you can tell there’s a clear improvement in camerawork and editing compared to Toho’s previous films. They also took a much bolder approach with CGI this time. While the human characters don’t reach the same level as in the Heisei era, they’re still decent, and their story doesn’t take away from the overall experience.

The biggest change, in my opinion, is Godzilla’s design. Honestly, this might be my favorite Godzilla suit Toho has ever created. His dorsal plates are ridiculously oversized, which I love, and the added pinkish hue makes him look even more striking — it actually reminds me of the MonsterVerse Godzilla x Kong design. His movements feel far more realistic than before, and his atomic breath is visually stunning. I also really appreciate how they experimented with CGI, even if it isn’t perfect—after all, this is a 1999 Japanese film, so I wasn’t expecting flawless CGI. What I’ve always loved about Toho’s Godzilla films is that, unlike modern blockbusters, you can tell how much practical work went into them — both in Godzilla’s design and in the environments. That handcrafted feel makes them so much more charming.

Like many Heisei films, this movie also benefits from its dual-story structure, where two separate plotlines eventually collide in the final act. The idea of an ancient extraterrestrial spaceship lying dormant in the ocean is another unique and creative concept from Toho — seriously, they never repeat themselves. That’s exactly why the Godzilla franchise remains so iconic and long-lasting. Every film introduces a new and distinct enemy, preventing the series from ever feeling repetitive.

Orga’s final form is incredibly well-designed and genuinely terrifying — it actually reminds me a lot of the MUTOs from the MonsterVerse. The final battle is long, action-packed, and takes place in a nighttime cityscape, which makes it even more visually impressive, especially with Godzilla’s atomic breath lighting up the scene. What more could you ask for? Godzilla 2000 deserves way more attention than it gets. After the disaster that was the 1998 Zilla, this film proved to the world that Toho was still the true king of Godzilla movies.

TWISTERS (2024) — Ever since I watched this movie, I’ve been wondering — how did anyone sit through this and actually enjoy it? Where are the iconic disaster movies of the 2000s? Sorry, but Twisters felt like a parody to me. Visually, it was solid — the tornado wrecking the power plant was pretty cool, I’ll give it that. But honestly? That was about the only thing worth praising. The acting was nonexistent, and the movie was packed with the most overused, cringey jokes, making it impossible to take anything seriously. None of the characters felt real… and don’t even get me started on Glen Powell chad-smirking through the entire film. This could have been a gripping, intense disaster movie full of drama. But the only disasters we actually got were the dialogues.

[13/60] — Godzilla & Friends Marathon

G̶O̶D̶Z̶ILLA (1998) — My Godzilla & Friends marathon has finally reached one of my childhood favorites — 1998’s Zilla. It’s funny to think that years ago, I actually considered this a true classic Godzilla movie, simply because I hadn’t yet discovered Toho’s amazing films. But now? Yeah, I just call it Zilla like everyone else—because it has absolutely nothing to do with the real Godzilla. Watching it as an adult, this movie is bad in almost every way. I’d honestly call it more of a Jurassic Park parody than a Godzilla film. It completely disrespects Toho’s legendary kaiju, with the only connection being radioactivity. Before I get into why Zilla doesn’t deserve the “God” in his name, let’s talk about the human side of the movie first.

Even if I try to view this as a standalone monster movie, maybe I could say it’s enjoyable. But it’s not—because the human characters ruin it. The acting is terrible, and every single scene is packed with forced, cringeworthy jokes, making it impossible to take this movie seriously. The humor is as clichéd and overused as it gets, turning the film into a comedy rather than a tense disaster movie, which is what a Godzilla film should be. Instead of focusing on Zilla’s destruction, the movie is more concerned with a cliché romance between its two leads. Honestly, the only characters I actually liked were the old man who says Gojira and the fisherman during Zilla’s first attack. That’s it—about 30 seconds of the whole movie.

Now, let’s talk about the star of the film: Zilla. A not-so-terrifying, but hilariously weird-looking CGI monster. I still can’t understand who thought it was a good idea, after so many iconic Japanese Godzilla films, to turn America’s Godzilla into some kind of humanoid mutant lizard. I don’t want to be too negative — Zilla as a creature could work on its own if they hadn’t forced the Godzilla name onto it. It shares absolutely nothing with Toho’s King of the Monsters — not in design, and especially not in movement. The CGI, even for 1998, is rough. The wide shots look unfinished, like something out of an old video game. The close-ups, though, I’ll it—they’re actually well done. My favorite scenes include Zilla’s first attack, where they lure it out with fish. The way it bursts through the street looked pretty great. I also didn’t mind the final battle and execution — it wasn’t bad. But the rest of the movie? Boring and not engaging at all.

As if Zilla’s design and story weren’t disrespectful enough, TriStar also thought, “Hey, why not make Zilla pregnant?” Even that, I might have been able to tolerate — but there’s no getting past the fact that they figure it out using a basic pharmacy pregnancy test. For a skyscraper-sized radioactive lizard. What?! Then there are the baby Zillas. I actually really liked the animatronic ones — they looked great and honestly made up for some of the movie’s nonsense. But the CGI versions? Awful. They didn’t even resemble the animatronics. Some shots looked fine, while others were just unfinished, shadowless messes. The Madison Square Garden chase scene was a blatant ripoff of Jurassic Park’s kitchen sequence — just badly executed. TriStar really wanted to prove they could make a monster movie as good as Spielberg’s, but their attempt barely reached the level of a bad parody.

I’m just glad that years later, the U.S. finally got a real, respectful Godzilla with Legendary. TriStar’s Zilla is the perfect example of how not to handle a classic — especially if you don’t respect its legacy. That said, I understand why this film holds nostalgic value for a lot of people — it was a major monster movie for many childhoods, and in some way, it still has some importance in the genre. I wouldn’t say it’s completely unwatchable, but after all these years, it really shouldn’t be considered a Godzilla movie.

GODZILLA VS. DESTOROYAH (1995) — Is this one of, if not the best Godzilla movies Toho has ever made? Absolutely! The Heisei era finale is also the best entry in the franchise. Godzilla vs. Destoroyah is a perfect kaiju film that pays incredible tribute to the iconic 1954 Godzilla. It seamlessly integrates elements from the original film, like the Oxygen Destroyer, while respecting their legacy and still crafting an exciting, fresh story.

This movie fixes the small flaws I noticed in earlier Heisei films. The fantasy elements aren’t overdone, and the plot stays grounded, making for a truly great kaiju sci-fi film. There’s no forced comedy either! Godzilla Junior finally gets a realistic design that looks great, making his role in the story feel serious and impactful. The human storyline also remains strong, with interesting characters and just the right amount of drama, enough to keep the pacing tight without overshadowing the kaiju action.

The film runs on two parallel storylines: one focusing on the tense mission to prevent Godzilla from exploding and wiping out humanity, and the other following Destoroyah’s terrifying evolution. I love this dual approach in Heisei films because it keeps the movie engaging by giving us two compelling narratives that eventually collide.

Burning Godzilla’s design is absolutely stunning — easily my favorite in the Heisei era. The cinematography surrounding him is top-tier, making this the most visually impressive Heisei film. But for me, the true standout is Destoroyah. He’s easily in my top five Godzilla villains, not just because of his direct connection to the original Godzilla, but because he’s a genuinely terrifying and fascinating monster. His evolution throughout the film keeps you hooked, reminding me a lot of Shin Godzilla’s transformations — getting stronger and deadlier as the movie progresses. His hellish, demonic design adds a subtle horror element to the film, which I absolutely love.

The post-battle sequence is one of the most emotional and beautiful moments in the entire Heisei era. Watching Godzilla slowly melt down, expressing both agony and the closing of a complete story, is breathtaking. For me, the perfect Godzilla timeline is the 1954 classic leading into the Heisei films. I really hope Destoroyah appears in a modern Godzilla movie because his evolutionary abilities give him so much potential as a villain. Now that I’ve finished all the Heisei films, I can absolutely recommend them to anyone who loves Japanese drama or kaiju films. Even with 30+ years of history, these movies remain incredibly enjoyable and forever iconic!

GODZILLA VS. SPACEGODZILLA (1994) — I can’t say it enough — the kaijus of the Heisei Godzilla era are insanely creative and well-designed. Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla is another fantastic monster movie that never lets you get bored for a second! The visuals are stunning, especially the wide shots of Godzilla rampaging through the city — they might just be the best in the Heisei era so far. On top of that, SpaceGodzilla’s design is absolutely breathtaking and massive. His origin is really interesting, and the whole crystallized body not only makes him look terrifying but actually makes him seem even more intimidating than Godzilla himself. The story flows pretty well, nothing too complex, which makes it all the more enjoyable. This would be a near-perfect kaiju film for me if it weren’t for a few small flaws. I felt like Miki Saegusa’s telekinetic abilities were a bit over the top here — it leaned more into fantasy than sci-fi. Also, Baby Godzilla’s presence felt pretty unnecessary in this one. He didn’t really have an impact on the story, and his almost human-like movements kind of took away from the film’s seriousness. But even with those minor issues, the kaiju battle scenes more than made up for it. They were long, intense, and visually amazing. This movie absolutely deserves its place as one of the best in the Heisei era!

Right from the start, it’s clear that the visuals are a step up from the previous movies. I really like Mechagodzilla’s design, and they did a great job making it feel massive on screen. The kaiju opponent this time is Rodan, who is one of my favorites from this era. His model looks absolutely incredible, and his movement is surprisingly well-executed for a Japanese film from ’93. But for me, the real highlight of the film is Baby Godzilla. I’ll it I was a bit worried at first because I thought the concept could easily make the movie feel too childish, but that didn’t happen. Instead, we got an adorable yet surprisingly believable little Godzilla that actually fits into this world. The fight scenes are awesome, and the wide shots of Godzilla destroying the city look stunning. GODZILLA VS. MOTHRA (1991) — Watching this movie for the second time, I found it way more entertaining than I did the first time. Normally, I’m not a big fan of mixing sci-fi with fantasy in movies, but in this case, I actually see it as a positive. One of the things I love about the Heisei Godzilla films is how diverse the kaiju origins are — Godzilla from radiation; Biollante from a failed experiment; King Ghidorah brought from the future; and now Mothra as a mythical guardian of Earth. I love jungle adventure movies, so I was already hooked from the start. The iconic Cosmos priestesses and their song are a must-have in any Mothra film, adding this light and almost magical fantasy vibe to the whole thing. The final battle is easily one of the best in the Heisei era! It takes place at night, which is a huge plus for me — I love kaiju fights in big cities after dark. That’s the kind of guilty pleasure that really makes a monster movie for me. The only small downside is Mothra’s design — it looks a bit too much like a plush toy and doesn’t feel as high-quality as Godzilla or even Battra. But overall, this movie is still a solid addition to the Godzilla franchise!

GODZILLA VS. KING GHIDORAH (1991) — Ghidorah is still, to this day, the most iconic enemy Godzilla has ever faced, created by Toho! This film stands out in the Heisei era with its goofy style, largely due to how people imagined future technology 30+ years ago. I really liked that we finally got to see Godzilla’s origin story and how Ghidorah was created. The sci-fi scenes might seem funny by today’s standards, but I honestly don’t mind at all — if anything, they make the movie even more entertaining. The time travel elements and some of the less logical story choices take away from the film’s seriousness, but for me, this movie is all about fun, a refreshing change of pace after The Return of Godzilla. I’m seriously hoping that Toho or Legendary will bring us a Mecha-King Ghidorah someday, because that was hands down the highlight of the film!

SHREK 5 (Teaser Review) ― This is the biggest disappointment the cinema has ever faced. The Fairy Godmother is rolling in her grave. The most iconic animation ever made for the screen has been ruined for good. For me, Shrek will exist as a trilogy after this, a closed story that defined my childhood...

[7/60] — Godzilla & Friends Marathon

GODZILLA VS. BIOLLANTE (1989) — This is one of the most interesting Godzilla films, with one of the most unique villains in the franchise. I think it’s really clever how the Heisei Godzilla films are interconnected, forming a continuous story about Japan’s most iconic monster. At the same time, each film stands on its own with a unique storyline, ensuring that these movies never become repetitive. That’s the genius of Toho! Biollante is a fusion of a plant, Godzilla and a human soul — something both grounded, terrifying, and beautiful! The final battle was masterfully crafted, and despite the film being made with almost no CGI, it remains incredibly enjoyable to watch. A minor flaw is that the story’s development can be quite chaotic, requiring a lot of attention to fully follow what’s happening and why. However, despite this, it’s still a highly entertaining film! I also want to highlight one of the film’s strongest aspects — the debut of Miki Saegusa, who is undoubtedly the queen of the Godzilla franchise and carries the human storyline of the Heisei era on her back!

[6/60] — Godzilla & Friends Marathon

THE RETURN OF GODZILLA (1984) — For me, the Heisei Godzilla era is the best of them all! With the Heisei Godzilla, I feel like Godzilla’s character was truly reborn, and after the 1954 classic, we finally got serious Godzilla films again. I think The Return of Godzilla is a perfect way to kick off this era, as the focus is entirely on Godzilla, without the film being cluttered with random kaijus. The best comparison I can make is with the 2014 MonsterVerse movie — both have a dark, ominous atmosphere and a sense of mystery surrounding Godzilla. He is terrifying in this film, and his magnitude is fully on display. Despite its age, I still find this movie incredibly enjoyable and iconic! Godzilla is no longer just a metaphor for war but now represents the catastrophic consequences of human science. This returning Godzilla no longer destroys a defeated post-war Japan — this time, he tears through towering skyscrapers! Thirty years after his creation, Godzilla once again proves why he is still the King!
