really good! really didn't expect it to be as sharp as this, walks along the edge of a knife with the ways it presents so many subtle tensions. surprised at how graphic the sex gets too but honestly it works quite well; very much something hidden away made bare, intimate. there's good story here, good stories among them. I do think it's very very much at its best when circling around the lavender scare -- its occasional shifts into the 80s (and later, 60s, 70s) just aren't quite as capitvating to me as the hiding. incorporating the stories of roy cohn and joe mccarthy kept things exciting and grounded at the same time. speaking of which, they're two of the three best performances in this series, I'm just happy to see chris bauer as mccarthy because the wire's frank sobotka is almost my single favourite character in television ever.
does lose me at points, maybe it could've been an episode or two shorter, and I found myself going back and forth on hawk and marcus's characters somewhat but overall it's a tight and engaging series with really strong production values, performances, and an ending that I'm not too proud to it made me cry.

this succeeds, if it succeeds, on the back of some of the gnarliest kills I've seen in a minute. unsure if I'd go to bat for it as the best in the series, recency bias is certainly a thing, but I really did squirm in my seat more than a few times. even when they're fairly predictable I think there's a lot of care that's gone into making these things unpleasant in the right ways and there's plenty of subversions that go into this start to finish in the first place.
there's a really unfortunate artifice around it though, maybe it's just the consequences of digital filmmaking, but, it's a little distracting to see so many digital effects at play. the first three movies aren't incredibly realistic, but there's a mood and a spirit to them that makes them feel quite grounded -- much of this LOOKS like a MOVIE. I was really worried that this would possess something of a sardonic attitude too, especially with that asshole kid at the beginning; and I'm just glad that the filmmakers never let that sense get the better of them. the sense of humour's really quite well balanced and infrequent enough to avoid bothering me.
if anything though, I'm skeptical of its rewatchability, there's a greater emphasis on story and character here it feels that might dominate too much of the runtime (and this is certainly longer than the others which are as watchable as they are because they're just more efficient, lean). I was never getting impatient waiting for any deaths here, if I was I think they're largely worth the wait, but I'm not sure I want to spend so much time with this family -- the concept and new spin is fair (I'd certainly expect a franchise's 6th entry to try something new) but, again, there's a greater sense of construction here than the others that's hard to ignore, turn myself away from.

with that said though, yeah, it really did win me over, despite any misgivings about direction or approach. I'm here for the deadly rube goldberg machines and these are some of the most fun so far. and I've wrote more about this than any other movie I've seen in weeks, so.

unsure of how I'd accurately rank them all now but going off of gut reaction (and not revisiting its predecessors recently other than 3) I might put it at 3rd best?
3 > 2 > 6 > 5 > 1 > 4??

falls a little flat for me, mostly kept afloat by some pretty sinister acts and a fun little showcase for Vincent Price in its closing scenes. it's dark, surprisingly so for the period, and paints its story with such a beautiful looking palette; yet it never really feels especially engaging. it's a lengthy ways to the going getting good but I don't think it's especially great even when we're there, for any reason over another. less a miss and more something that ed me by but I'm disappointed all the same.

dunno; I'm pretty surprised to see this mixed response to this because I was on the verge of a 4.5. just happy to see Cage in his element, still providing excellent performances given the opportunity. really successfully avoided a lot of the trappings and pitfalls of small budgets for me. lots of variety in a limited location, in action, presentation, and performance, tight and lean and carried a mostly great sense of momentum. stumbles slightly towards the finish line but I really ired this. hallucinatory without any corny psychedelia. hard to ignore the possible, probable, influences of things like Woman in the Dunes or Walkabout. totally trying to champion this one.

nice and novelistic, sharp, lean, and full of great performances; unsurprising that this was Lumet's own favourite of his movies (if I'm ing correctly). took a minute to get into but I think this is pretty rewarding. it's a strong product anyways but there's a lot of care and balance to how it represents these multi-faceted characters and their motivations, psychology, all that stuff. at the very least -- this is a great movie for character.
inescapably a little too long for my tastes though, maybe it's waking up sick but the length ended up some kind of... not bothersome, but I just Knew I'd want something shorter. Treat Williams is a treat. har har.

really disappointing actually, pretty much my least favourite Malle so far. there's an obvious artistic quality even early on but it never really achieves anything. errs to the side of just feeling too pedestrian to either excel with the talents at hand or to revel in a gritty, beat up, crime drama. Lancaster rock-steady but has been better, Sarandon strong in a squarely dramatic role; neither that big a reason to see this. I don't think theyre utilised as well as they could be. and it doesn't help that theyre surrounded by such unlikeable characters either. picks up in its final act but it's really too little too late.

ehh... was hoping for something secretly Great but there's little to stand out from Renoir's post-war effort. I'm not the hottest on him anyways despite a real fondness for La Bete Humaine, and I think the dark and psychological elements are strong here too, as well as providing a good sense of patience in the storytelling, but it's not strong enough. evidentally cut down and not quite the movie he wanted to make, but I don't think the cast have enough teeth to really bite in a deserving way. longtime lover of Robert Ryan but he's sort of limp at times. not too convinced by Bennett either. Bickford's got a good snarl though. a subtle seething that gets all the more pronounced is more or less all that was keeping me involved. in theory, sure, this could've been real good, but really is ultimately just a touch too flat, uninvolving. would have loved to see what someone like Fritz Lang could've done with this.

the boredom is the cardinal sin though for sure; both forced and not substantial, a weird and unproductive combination that results in pretty much nothing. not even necessarily angry at this but it's just defeatingly dull. for much, much, better writing on this than mine, or if you just want to see someone rip these assholes new assholes; then please do consider checking out this review instead which I can at least assure you is a lot more entertaining than whatever this was supposed to be.

semi-spoilers to come

mixed bag. that sounds more negative than intended but it's both shockingly excellent and pretty poor.
explores the period with a really strong sense of authenticity, really feels lived in and exciting, hardly cheap. music is obviously so, so killer. I just love the more simple and grounded setting here. for that first hour and some change, as Smoke and Stack put their t together, it's one of the very best movies I've seen all year. feels rich, but really is just a great, great, ride to be on regardless. strong moments of character. I loved it.
but once we get to the vampire stuff? not so much. doesn't really have the teeth (ha) to ever feel as threatening as it should. the standoff stakes don't feel so high and I don't think that the club setting feels like an exciting place to fortify in these circumstances. and for as good as Michael B Jordan had been in this duel role (really allows for some dynamic acting, keeps the narrative structure engaging and exciting too) he ends up just being... the boring movie star in an action role I'm really unimpressed by. just feels like the whole thing slips away. and I'm really not hot on most of its last 15 minutes or so either.

but still; really terrific to a point. was skeptical for sure. Coogler proved me wrong. then he proved me right. but he proved me wrong first and for longer, so I've got to give it to him. all things considered. both a slight 4.5 and a fair 2.5, makes sense to split the difference.

I'm a sap sometimes. surprised it took the direction it went in; it's not always successful but it certainly feels like it stands out as a result.

such such SUCH a blessing to finally see this after so long. easily my favourite painter of all time. I feel such a kinship to her and her work, like we just get each other. and it's wonderful to see how lovely she is as a person; incredibly affable, charming, witty and funny while remaining a steadfast anti-intellectual. it's all about the feeling.
really the only thing holding this back on any level at all is that I'd love to see more of her work process and how she might approach the literal act of creating rather than simply spending time with her, but I suppose it fits the "portrait" of the title well enough this way -- and she's certainly good company. can only wish that this was a little longer.

frankly never going to read the source material (864 pages are you fucking kidding me) and feel somewhat vindicated by the way I can't really imagine how you'd manage to squeeze that much out of what's presented of a heavily truncated version here (of course I know there's stuff missing But Still) -- all that matters is that as far as a movie goes I did enjoy this quite a bit. it's Garbo. what a face. really strong performance too. and her introductory scene through the steam from the train is just so, so, deeply killer. that's movies. Clarence Brown directs this incredibly well actually -- it's oftentimes so refreshing to see that classic Hollywood elegance pulled off so well. great blocking. and this has such a gorgeous visual quality; in deep iration of these closeups. just really enjoyed the romance movie prospects here. fairly easy to take myself out of the Tolstoy of it all and engage with everything as it is.

having read the novella yesterday morning I can confirm that this is such a very literal adaptation, more or less a visual transcription, of the source material that, if you're not one for reading, you can essentially replace it.
that'd be silly though.
the text isn't the best thing I've read all year but Hemingway's voice simply speaks a lot better coming off of the page than from Spencer Tracy's mouth. he's pretty solid (talking about Spencer Tracy, that's an understatement), but there's a strange distance and artifice here that I don't think really services the story. the only saving grace, as far as I'm concerned, is that Sturges manages to make those dream sequences look so damn haunting -- they are beautiful. and for what it's worth Tracy's really effective at just holding your attention entirely solo over an hour and a half.

for my money though the Anthony Quinn version of this'll always be the best. good book too.

trapped in no-budget purgatory with no actual charisma or chemistry to pull it towards paradise. endlessly dull with no vision -- for its characters and plot or in its direction. felt about as long as yesterday's viewing of Titus, which is about twice as long. there's elements of something good here but it's so half baked. first level film student scenario; i'm just begging for a push for more IDEA. and despite what it's swinging for with wanting to live it's still just wrapped in such a detatched irony, a nonchalance, that it just comes off as cynical and ineffacious, unrewarding. sad!

ehhh... it's almost there. didn't think I'd dislike this based on the Final Destination comparisons and similarities but this does wonders at making you realise how fun the filmmaking in those movies usually ends up being. here you know people are going to die but there's a total absence of satisfaction in almost every instance because there's a total absence of any build up, suspense, tension. every death is treated more or less the same with a somewhat sardonic sense of humour (that almost comes off as patronising? I dunno) -- and underdelivers specifically because they're all so instantaneous. cut to or from far too quickly or just such a literally FAST way to die that just fails to leave much of an impact.
certainly some appreciable elements, I actually somewhat like the story it's swinging for, and the last act carries a pretty serviceable momentum. but really fails to leave any real mark or impression all things considered. just that I guess you need to be on Oz Perkins' wavelength a lot more than I seem to be.

occasionally excellent, really strikes hard when experimenting with form or with content and there's a number of similarly great performances throughout, my favourite of which being Alan Cumming who really enhances the strange tones and anachronistic choices to such a great degree. a lot of this just really works!!
but at the same time it meanders. hard to tell if it's more on Taymour or on Shakespeare; this is my introduction to Titus Andronicus and have no idea how lengthy it otherwise might feel. but there's just a lot hanging in the middle here. some of the content is pretty surprising, its reputation as Shakespeare's bloodiest is deserved, but for my tastes we're too often pulled away from the most interesting elements (Tamora and Saturninus) for the sake of exploring more characters that just aren't as exciting to spend time with. and if there's anything to knock Taymour for more specifically it's that I wished she'd utilised that more experimental approach more often. the moments feel few and infrequent.
Perhaps would be more actively enthusiastic (I'm not quite as mixed as i sound) if it just wasn't as long as it is, certainly feeling much of its runtime. worth getting into, but I can hardly blame myself for putting it off for years at the same time, yknow??

everybody's coming out swinging and then viola davis shows up and drops a performance even greater than the efforts of hoffman, streep, and adams, in just a single scene.

really impressive vision, aided exceptionally well by the ever-great roger deakins. breezes by despite such a tense and uneasy scenario; approaches the idea with such a talent that really puts the oleannas out there to shame (which is still poor even at my most sympathetic to david mamet). there's a lot of meat on these bones and it's worth digging into. one of the better movies i've seen so far this year for sure.

cried before the movie even finished rolling the opening credits because it was just so magical and that sense of wonder kept me crying as the tin man sang if I only had a heart and for so much of the rest of it
