It’s interesting, because I feel like this movie really captured an affect that has been hovering around me in the past week. I reviewed an exhibition for a magazine for the first time this past week. It was fun. I was thinking hard and I was writing even harder. When I ended my review I opened instagram and saw the latest massacre my country committed in Gaza and felt, again, ashamed and appalled that this nightmarish genocide still continues. I thought to myself, what am I doing about it. I saw friends posting stories in protest, etc. meanwhile I was writing an art review. It felt petty in comparison. I returned to the word document and decided I will add a paragraph. And that paragraph, I believe, is quite a perfect description of this movie. I will share it after the piece gets published.

Took me 5 sittings to finally finish it. Not because I didn’t enjoy, but because i couldn’t take it all at once. Sometimes, when I’m too excited, I out. My eyelids feel like weights, my body heats up, I can barely breathe, and all of a sudden I wake up hours later. Over two years of trying to watch this film, this experienced happened to me every time. I decided two weeks ago that I want to finish this movie. That I have to finish it. That it will teach me something about something. About love or life or beauty. I was right. Took five sittings but it was worth it. Thank you kanopy for tracking the last scene I saw before falling asleep every time. I don’t know how you do that.

Words cannot describe how sad I am to finish the hunger games franchise. A serendipitous coincidence started my affair with this franchise. I was high in Vegas and the cable tv began playing the first movie. A week ed and I’ve watched all the movies. I don’t know exactly why, but these movies deeply resonated with me this time around. Is it the revolution, true love, or the look in the eyes of the people when they see Katniss Everdeen steps among them— I am not sure. What I do know is that these movies made me tear up for things I long for and things I am most terrified of. Perhaps that is what a good movie does. I hope to make it a habit every now and then to rewatch this franchise.

Started watching at 2am, thought I’d just watch a bit and go to sleep. Found myself at 4:30am with goosebumps, drenched in my own sweat (I oversweat when I’m excited…). I’m obsessed— can’y wait to see the finale

Watched on cable tv (with so many commercial breaks, god!) in the Fontainebleau in Vegas till 2am. This movie maid me shiver, crushed and then resuscitated my heart. I didn’t how deep it hits. I might continue to the sequel now. I watching this movie when it came out. At the time I perceiving it as science fiction. Today, sadly, this rings closer to reality than it is to sci fi.

A sketch of a few thoughts:
1. It is quite remarkable how architecture functions in this movie. Architecture seems to be what charts the borders of survival in this slasher horror movie.  Instead of people being killed because they are about to have sex, in Inferno the next victim is whoever threatens to cross the architectural limits and leave the container of the building— by going to the cellar, the kitchen basement, the fuse box at the storage room, or the service staircase, namely surveying the edges of the building— ends up being murdered. 
2. Though the movie can be read as an allegory to the subjugation of women— all the first victims are women— by an oppressive system— the building— that delegitimizes their agency— Kazamian— and invisibly surveils them— pipelines infrastructure, Agento manages to throw into the mix a moment of class struggle— short lived as the workers promptly find their own death by the building they are responsible to take care of— as well as a fling of eschatological mysticism— hellfire, the angel of death, Armageddon, oh, and electronic punk rock, some would even say it constitutes metal— and, lest we forget, animal rights—the cat killer is eaten alive by rats, the irony is too much.
3. I can easily see how this film might leave someone with the impression that the system must be burnt down to achieve liberation. After all, the house does burn down. But the last image doesn’t depict Mark so much as liberated, but rather, I’d venture, terrified. To me it seems that the moments in the film harboring the most revolutionary potential were those where characters boldly surveyed the cracks in the architecture, which ended up costing them their lives. However, it is that attempt to uncover the mystery undergirding the structure we live in, the three mothers in the case of this film, that we begin to map the boundaries imposed upon us. True, seeking clarity is a dangerous project— all the characters in the film except one eventually die. But it is the only way to find the escape route from the burning building we’re all entrapped in.

I don’t know how to call what I felt seeing this movie. But I know that this movie made me feel something not many movies do.

So much to say that I don’t know where to start. Achieves a perfect balance between art house film and a soap opera

Nothing like a Godard film. No one like Godard. Loved the dog. Reminded of the dog I used to have. It’s true. On one side you’ve got fascists. On the other you’ve got animals. The former puts up infinite layers to disguise their nakedness. The latter is unclothed as it is already naked. And here, with the collision of digital imaging apparatuses, we oscillate between the perspective of these two extremes.

Yes I can’t believe I managed to recall the name of this amazing film I saw in the vienalle in 2020

there is something about getting closer to another person, a perpetual dance of unveiling and concealing, that sometimes a hug feels like you collide into one another— almost like a jump cut.

Seeing this film, I’ve been confronted with the question: How do German documentarians could turn the camera onto German life after Riefenstahl’s Triumph of the Will. It struck me, that internal anthropology and propaganda stride along a very blurred line. Though the specter of Riefenstahl’s film is always haunting the German camera, I believe that Tscherkassky succeeds in carefully liberating the scene of documentation and its instrument, the camera (which features so often it should receive a credit) from its history of state-violence. Fracturing the solidity of a monolith perception using double exposures, split screens, overlays, abstractions, and what not, Tscherkassky reminds the viewer that reality in its core is an arena of contestation, that reality at its core is indeterminate and multistable. No one image exhaustively captures that intricate tapestry we call daily life, or, in the case of Miniatures, an excursion of avant-garde artists from Berlin to Hoisdorf.

Came back home after a night out and turned 25 to that movie

The gangs of New York are replaced by a new gang. Those in uniforms and big guns.

I wept. I laughed. And the goosebumps kept striking. 

Thank god these r the movies made for the young ones these days and not the movies I grew up with.

it seems to me that this (wonderful) movie works on two s. The Marxist and the romantic (I wish it was a slapstick— it sounds better next to Marxist). With nearly diamonds and adaptation of Shakespeare for the couplet to rhyme with Matuschek, this movie is almost cheap. Christmas presents. Betrayals. A predictable unfolding romance. But Lubitsch cleverly undergirds the romantic grid with a poignant Marxian tone, and the shortcomings thereof. This is a movie set in a factory— that of the American bourgeoise. The employees exploited, the boss a profit maximizer, and the product sold pretty much a hoax— musical cigar boxes… However, even after its most successful night since ‘28, the shop closes and life must begin. And how dull life looks when there is no one to celebrate Christmas Eve with. In other words, the movie leaves us with the question: what are bonuses worth if there is no one to spend them for?

A remarkable document of sex without ever really showing it. Felt as if someone saw lots of porn videos and zoomed in on everything in the scene other than the intercourse.

Experimental retake of birth footage. I like this version more. But u gotta watch the first birth first.
