“Why, she wouldn’t even harm a fly.”

A pure revolutionary watch by one of the fathers of cinema, Alfred Hitchcock. It redefines horror and the concept of the supernatural. Moreover the famous shower scene purely changed cinema. The iconic editing with rapid cuts and the screeching, stinging score creates a sense of the brutal violence on display. The bold choice of killing the protagonist - after half the movie develops her character - was unheard of at the time and what creates this bold masterpiece. A crazy case of dissociative identity disorder before it’s time and an example of how confident rule-breaking choices define cinema.

The Killing is another label of Stanley Kubrick’s timeless collection. It’s sharp, effective and well-constructed that remains a timeless classic that holds up as a story even for today’s standards. It’s perfectly conveys storytelling. We see frequent different views and timelines as our knowledge of the advanced heist expands. Theirs no particular main character. No star. Just a series of characters moving throughout life. It’s short and brutal, with an almost unsatisfying yet amazing ending. Stanley continues to never fail and I can’t wait to watch more of his work.

A wonderful tribute to the mastermind that is Steven Hawking. It shows constantly his genius, but also his life - and the pureness and reality of it. Through his lens we witness his brilliance; showing his revolutionary ideas and complicated fragile relationships. Times lingers throughout this movie - not just in Hawking’s research but in the way his life and love evolves. His idea subtlety mirrors Hawking’s theories with how his disease pressures his body and moreover his time. It’s an artful movie - with powerful acting from Eddie Redmayne that portrays that beautiful rollercoaster of the genius Steven Hawking.

“Power over spice is power over all.”

With every watch I feel as if I have just witnessed cinematic history. This movie just might be perfect, it may not be as iconic as Star Wars, or as influential as The Matrix or 2001ASO but in many ways is far greater. It brings together every fundamental of cinema as delivers it exceptionally. It’s so incredibly captivating and entertaining but most a beauty to the eyes. From the opening scene, with its hypnotic solar eclipse to the incomplete yet satisfying ending of Paul defeating Feyd-Rautha. It’s combines vast, zoomed shot - creating a sense of the scale of the universe with close ups to facial expressions - expressing emotions of anger, fear and sorrow. Denis Villeneuve’s genius perfectly applied colour grading to each and every frame. Powerful orange-yellows scatter the movie bringing you into the world of the Fremen and their sacred planet. The composition of elite characters add to the complex yet compelling nature of this movie. Paul Atreides lives through a full metamorphosis as his eyes widen about his own life and his future. Yet, his overpowering love for Chani attempts to halt his political views as he stands on a bridge between love and power. This movie is nothing short of a masterpiece and even after four or five times watching is equally engaging. I will never not love the sci-fi, epic, world bending masterpiece that is Dune.

“When I look at nature, I see clearly that God exists.”

Quite literally the movie of art. Utterly breathtaking cinematography told through the powerful story of one of history’s greatest artists - Vincent Van Gogh. The film combines focuses on Van Gogh true life - not being one of fame but of misunderstanding and struggles. His genius, rather than elevating him, isolates him from the world. Later on he begins to experience hallucinations. Moments of transcendence as his perception of life goes beyond what is perceivable. At Eternity’s Gate is not conventional cinema but a break from comfort - a risk. It’s a spiritual biography of one of the faces of art; an attempt to feel like what it is to be Van Gogh. An underrated, unforgettable masterpiece that grips you from its very first frame to its last.

“Life is like a boxing match. The bell rings and you come out swinging. Then, somewhere along the way, you forget why you’re in the fight.”

This movie feels like sitting around a warm fire for hours. It’s comfortable, calming and lives with a constant hint of beauty. It doesn’t shout for its brilliance- but earns it through its patient and rooted characters. Each one is like a relic; holding onto something or someone they’ve lost. The film uses the combination of these characters in their isolated situation to explore who they truly are. No one is perfect in The Holdovers, and their path to redemption is jagged. Yet the film points minor hope towards the future of each and every character. This felt like a dive into the 70s’ - faded film grain, vintage music and warm, pastel colours. The intentional throwback creates a nostalgic atmosphere - as if a story your parents would tell you. It’s a well paced series of moments. The narrative breathes; with its slow, steady scenes of human interpretation and understanding. I love this movie so much. It’s a change from typical cinema into a bold yet calming story of humanity and the struggles everybody faces.

“I didn’t know who she really was. And I didn’t know who I was either.”

There’s something so honest about the story told in Demolition. Davis is truly just emotionally raw and real. He handles grief in an almost uncomfortable way, not screaming nor crying but with a sense of silent chaos. Upon his wife’s death Davis begins to reminisce on their relationship - slowly he begins to question if his love was from the heart and how much he truly knew about his wife. He appears as an unconventional character; seeming brutally awkward and honest. He isn’t trying to be cruel; he just can’t deal with lying anymore. The movies constantly holds an emotional tone. Empowering the watcher with ongoing sentimental, fragmented misdirection. It just moves you so much - leading you through the story of a life, and how it’s evolve through change. I truly love this absolute hidden gem of a movie and it’s certainly a new favourite of my from Jake Gyllenhaal. Such a riveting watch.

Warfare is great. It doesn’t try to trap the impossible scale of war - but instead finds one powerful story and brings it to life. It’s a blend of cinematic components that capture the claustrophobic and traumatic nature of war. It’s unpredictable, unfair - but embracing the idea to create a compelling 95 minutes of entertaining cinema. It’s one of the more raw war movies out there and brings it to stand out. It combined a less standout cast with real, pure performances from each and every actor. Warfare doesn’t give an opinion on war, it doesn’t glorify it nor romanticise it. Instead, it presents war as a procedural, brutal, deeply human experience. One of the best movies to be released this year and another frequent success by A24

Run Lola Run is a chaotic, fast-paced thrill ride that creates a thrilling image in 90s cinema. It’s packed with kinetic energy, philosophical undertones, aggressive filmmaking and incredible sound to construct a short but sweet watching experience. Everything mirrors the antagonist Lola. The films structure, rhythm and climax’s depend on her syncing each frame and beat with Lola’s every movie.

Yet I think what makes this more than just your typical watch is its choice of exploration - diving into the curious chaos theory and the power of minuet decisions. Franka Potente delivers a thrilling performance, embracing her characters fiery, riveting story with an emotional intensity that brings out the soul of the movie.

Tykwer’s editing, varying between flashbacks, animation and split second timing all contribute to a sense of momentum that never lets up throughout all 81 minutes its spans across. We watch it through the eyes of the kinetic Lola as she makes move after move in her twisting, unpredictable story.

On the surface Run Lola Run may seem like another gimmick, yet it’s a masterclass in how organisation can lead to considerable meaning. Turning a small story into a piece of cinematic history.

A wonderful and clever story on power, insanity and sacrifice. It’s a character driven masterclass that layers psychological drama with humour and tragedy.

Its powerful individual themes scatter the movie. It’s a constant clash between free will and control - with McMurphy symbolising chaotic individuality whilst Nurse Ratched defies his character posing as mechanised, repressive force of the institution. Ratched constantly conveys an energy of psychological control of her patients rather than physical. Her obsession with schedules and organisation emphasises her authority and allows McMurphys somewhat genius to thrive.

The film constantly balances the line between sanity and madness. Many patients are there willingly yet others - like Chief Bromden - are forced into their own view of hiding behind insanity itself. McMurphy is obviously taking the same approach. Despite this his approach of faking madness leads him into a slow, unbeknown path directly towards it. This leads to the constant question of the reality of madness and why faking it would make any difference.

McMurphy particularly, being the typical anti-hero, adds more to this movie than just the surface level. He’s an emplacement of the human spirit and its resistance. He’s a character that refuses to fall into what’s expected and questions whether the seemly right decisions and truly correct. He’s no perfect figure - in fact he’s often arrogant and selfish - but still manages to shine as a glimpse of light beyond the insane trap of the lobotomy.

One Flew Over A Cuckoos Nest is a powerful movie that’s has perfectly held the test of time. Jack Nicholson delivers a breathtaking performance in an embodiment of chaos and hope. It’s a raw, cynical story on the resilience of the human spirit.

A touching, beautifully crafted love story; it captures a unique, rare portrayal of love. Rather than taking a typical dramatic approach it looks for a different, more touching standpoint of silent intimacy. Intimacy based of understandings over desire.

It’s powerfully told, following two lost characters who drift apart from their partners and seek to feel again. Charlotte wanders through temples and philosophical lectures, whilst Bob mindlessly drinks and sleepwalks through jobs. Their aimlessness captures the essence of their connection. A constant desire to feel a sense of change and emotion. They’re both echoes of the same experience - alike in essence yet far apart in lifestyle.

The atmosphere throughout the movie is also incredibly powerful. Lance Acord’s cinematography swims in the sea of colour that Tokyo holds. Its dreamlike characters and settings reflect the movies constant emotional fog. It’s a movie that’s found a line between love and beauty through Coppola’s elegant vision. It’s not a loud movie. But sometimes the story is shown and not told.

“I just want to feel like I’m not drowning.”

Holy shit I love this movie. It captures everything you’d ever want into 135 minutes of stunning, breathtaking cinema. This is A24s tour de force. An orchestrated masterpiece that brings several aspects of filmmaking to create perfection.

The music and score brings the emotion to the next level. The use of rap to heighten frustration, contrasted with Radiohead’s haunting presence in the film’s most tragic moments adds to every scene. Every song elevates the watching experience with seemingly effortless tonal shift - balancing the act of anger and sorrow. Most notably Godspeed, by Frank Ocean, stands out the most. It feels like a break; a quiet breather for the movie as the tone changes along with the story itself.

Waves effectively splits the movie into two halves, each with powerful messages and imperfectly perfect relationships. The first half is obsessive. Chasing goals whilst constantly pushed down by the harsh reality of life. Tyler is a ticking time-bomb. He tries so desperately to keep his life together yet eventually - it crumbles. He hurt deep down. The pressures of wrestling begin to catch him up as his injury comes in; his relationship begins to become the only thing that keeps himself together. And when it ends - he loses everything

The second part of Waves completely brings another perspective and a complete change visually and emotionally. After a chaotic first half, it transitions into a quieter, more introspective life of love and redemption. Emily is seeking regeneration after he brothers twisting path. She’s learning to live with, and beyond, her trauma as her family falls and picks itself up over and over again. Her emotional growth is marked by her ability to face the past, understand herself, and eventually move forward.

It’s a visual masterpiece - perfectly encapsulating the forced emotions through breathtaking cinematography. The constant use of vibrant neons coupled with formidable panoramas creates a breathtaking watch.

I truly love everything about this perfect movie and could speak about it for hours on end. It’s not just something you watch - it’s something you feel.

“It was all a dream… right?”

Fame, fear and expectations - Perfect Blue tears into all of it with a tragic, psychotic tale that leaves an eerie and disturbing atmosphere.

It’s such an intense movie, an experience of the chaotic downfall of Mima Kirigoe’s life. It’s discomforting - twisting and turning between what is reality or just an illusion. Mima’s self-expectations begin to take her over, her nerves of fame pushing her towards insanity as she thrives to become more than just herself. She’s starts to fear who she is - concerned about mirrors or shadows believing they want to kill her. Yet in reality they represent her mind, begging her to leave the industry and return to her beloved comfort. As the movies goes on, Mima’s obsession with her acting becomes too great and the line between reality or a fragment of her imagination begins to blur. She’s slowly losing control of her sense of identity - triggered by the intense pressure and exploitation in her work place that brings her far past the limit.

Perfect Blue bleeds tension through every scene, using powerful colour schemes to trap the viewer in Mima’s dark reality. The palette shifts between soft, dreamlike hues and saturated blues and reds. Moments of intensity are overwhelmed in crimson reds while melancholic scenes of vulnerability soak in cool, warm blues. Satoshi Kon expertly takes space and time and moulds it between reality, performance and pure fantasy.

The films common themes of loss, identity and surveillance hit harder in today’s digital screen - yet crafted in such a way to still feel authentic with time. Each scene is deliberate and incredibly powerful, begging for you to question not what’s just real, but what’s yours to believe.

Darren Aronofsky has once again not disappointed with the spectacular story of Mother!. On the surface, it’s a chaotic worthless story about a woman giving birth as the house gets chaotically invaded. But in typical Aronofsky fashion the movie dives much deeper than that.

Everything is symbolic about mankind and life in this representation of life through a simple house and Mother. Mother (Jennifer Lawrence) represents Mother Earth who nurtures and gives life and Him (James Bardem) is God - a creator who craves love and adoration from humanity more than protecting her and views her insanity as justified. The house is then like Earth itself - beautiful, pure and firstly cared for my Mother yet eventually destroyed by the visitors. These visitors are obviously representing mankind itself. Destroying, invading and disregarding the idea of respect in the place the have invaded.

Jennifer Lawrence role was truly a standout, breathtaking performance. She enraptures the desperation and pain when something she had cared for and loved for so long gets destroyed - being both the house and her baby. We watch her insanity unravel as she attempts to hold onto her precious emotions. She gives this feeling of internal struggle, a woman trying to hold everything together, but who is slowing being torn apart by the increasing pressures and horrors around her.

The movie overall is excellent - it balances beauty with chaos to string together and layered story on life itself. It’s all about the creation, destruction, ego, worship, sacrifice, and how humanity abuses and ruins what was given to them. It’s not meant to feels like a story but an overwhelming, dump of emotions. It was that way deliberately - Aronofsky said he wrote the movie in 5 days in a fever dream about humanity destroying nature. It’s overall amazing, unique and stunning and if you haven’t yet seen it’s a great, experimental perspective.

The Grand Budapest Hotel is the perfect combination of everything that truly makes cinema. Wes Anderson places scene upon scene of colour and framing to produce powerful, emotive visual imagery that adds together to make a fun, compelling story. It’s stacked cast of actors do an impressive job of delivering Anderson’s vision. Notably Willem Dafoe, playing JG Jopling - a mysterious counterpart of violence and brutality for Dmitri (played by Adrien Brody) and the rest of his family. Whilst having minimal screen time and dialogue, Dafoe’s character is extremely powerful to the story and adds to the overall intricacy of the story. It’s a beautiful and engaging watch that lives up to the previous Wes Anderson stories I deeply enjoyed. It was my 600th movie so I had high expectations and it certainly delivers. If you haven’t seen I can’t recommend enough!

This review may contain spoilers.

“You can’t just sit there and put everybody’s lives ahead of yours and think that counts as love.”

I truly cannot put into words how this makes me feel. It’s beautiful, tragic and incredibly powerful. It reaches far beyond just a movie. I adore everything about it, from the elegant performances of the touching trio to the breathtaking score and music.

Charlie, played by Logan Lerman, made this movie such a special watch. Charlie is a broken character, seeking an almost desperate redemption after a devastating past. He constantly writes to his friend. We never meet this friend and I don’t think we ever will because, sadly, he is dead. Charlie’s friend who “shot himself last may” is the first we properly hear of his sad past. He tries to hide and compress his emotions but when high, his true feelings are revealed. Charlie is constantly ed by Sam, played by Emma Watson, and Patrick, played by Ezra Miller. Both characters add powerful pillars to Charlie’s new life. Sam and Charlie are in love - yet held back by boundaries that seem to force away. A feeling both us, watching, and the two of them felt from the very beginning. Patrick on the other hand is a beam of joy for Charlie. A sign of hope and constant reminder that it will all get better. He is the only one that still somewhat cares for Charlie even after his friends worryingly abandon him. From the second Patrick meets Charlie at the football game to the final scene being picked up from his house Patrick is viewed as a sign of hope for Charlie even when it seems rough.

The music is also a work of genius throughout the movies main sequences. It layers already emotional scene with powerful depth to create a dynamic, personal energy that’s reminds us of Sam and Charlie’s relationship and their sharing love for the arts.

“We accept the love we think we deserve” One of a seemingly uncountable amount of pure, emotional dialogue. Many scenes were poems, a literal authors work. Obviously this came from the book but the way it was brought into picture with angelic detail and emotion brought it up to the next level.

Also the closing scenes dialogue cannot escape my brain nor heart. “You are alive. And you stand up and see the lights on the buildings and everything that makes you wonder. And in this moment, I swear, we are infinite." This how flow of speech truly sums up what this movie is about. Being alive. This final sequence is the most poetic, elegant scenes in all of cinema. Charlie’s crushing dialogue hints at an idea of hope, but doesn’t give it to us; rather lets David Bowies Heroes sink into our hearts as we look back on the pure beauty of the movie before us.

Honestly I have no idea if this review made any sense but I just love the everything this movie and thought I would share it in the best way that somewhat made sense. If you take on this away from this movie let it be to seek happiness at all times.

A wonderful rollercoaster of drugs and friendship. Trainspotting hits every element that makes an unforgettable experience: unique directing, fast pacing, emotional depth and pure unpredictability. Danny Boyle’s direction is both chaotic and stylish - he does an excellent jobs to adapt the elegant, unfiltered energy of Irvine Welsh’s novel.

Renton, played by Ewan Gordon, controls the movies flow with his phenomenal performance. Renton’s not just a typical addict - he’s a self conflicted, downward spiralling dreamer who wishes for redemption.

The movie is an amazing portrayal of addiction, desperation and panic. A bold, unforgettable classic beautifully adapted from the iconic novel.

“He’s not daft. He’s just different.”

An exceptional, tragic portrayal of the human spirit in cinema. This isn’t just a common coming-of-age story - but a touching, powerful glimpse into Billy’s world. It’s a statement on what life is for some: a harsh, unfair experience.

It portrays a unique connection between man and nature despite a world of incoherence. Billy finally begins to feel something. He finally has someone to connect with. But when both he and we are given hope, it is instantly taken away from us.

It’s a difficult watch, balancing hope and despair through the brutal portrayal of childhood. And that’s what makes the movie so good - it feels human, and even if we hate it, we know it’s real.

“If I don’t make it, don’t forget about me.”

A powerful tale of the golden American dream - a constant pursuit of greatness. It tells us to push beyond expectations and become more - through the world of basketball. It shows the courage needed to thrive in a world of opportunity yet weighed down by relentless competition. You’re brought into the authentic, harsh and real story about what it takes to reach the top level - and how sadly, it can still be not enough.

It tells us: life is hard, it always will be. But if we want something - if we’re truly ionate - greatness will be within reach.
This movie, despite its 3-hour runtime, didn’t even feel like a second; it formed into a representation of life itself through such a beautiful, ionate sport. Hoop Dreams isn’t just a story - it’s a painted picture of wanting more than just expected.

There are some films you don’t just watch - you experience, like moving through a dream you half- but fully feel. The Double Life of Véronique is one of those. It doesn’t offer answers nor solutions but sensations - flickers of memory, déjà vu, quiet heartbreak, and strange beauty. It balances on the line of reality and the mystery of the future .

At its core The Double Life of Véronique is a dream. It blends that strange line between imagination and reality - unable to find vivid sense but only know familiar symbols and signs. It’s eerie and unclear, a foggy story of unfamiliarity and questions. It’s beautiful - each frame strung together to create a powerful story on the illusion of control.

The puppet is a powerful character in the crafted story. He reflects Kieślowski himself - crafting stories and manipulation. He suggests ideas of the world of art and the hidden threats of humanity and people. The puppeteer is a metaphor. An all seeing, almost supernatural force, hinting at a mysterious connection to Veronique throughout the whole story. He controls the puppets, moving them to his choice and reflecting Veronique’s life as a powerful parallel.

This movie is rooted with beautiful imagery and foreshadowing. It’s a story about what’s it’s like to be alive, to feel, to lose and to die but most to make sense of the curious people we live around. It’s not just a movie - but a dream.

“Prejudice always obscures the truth.”

12 Angry Men shares a powerful message. It’s an amazing story, shifting in power dynamics constantly between each juror, portraying the importance of doubt and responsibility of justice. Each juror has there own message, own reason to be where they are - combined to create a thought provoking story on the power of reason.

It’s a movie on humanity, on the surface as well as much deeper. It’s less about simple whether a boy or guilty or not, and more about how easily life can be thrown away when people stop thinking critically but prioritising what they perceive as facts rather than the truth.

The ‘verdict’ is really the jurors themselves, and how the wrestle with each others conscience. That’s what makes this more so great, it’s about human, and the power we have on ourselves as well as others.

The Black Bag was a organised, original tale that was layered with an intricate plot and great cinematography. On the surface it’s a simple movie, but it dives deeper into a powerful series of beautiful scenes mixed with complemental dialogue. The unique visual style was appealing throughout its 94 minute runtime - using elements, colours and framing to enhance the mood of the film. The pacing and structure of the film is also exceptional. It’s slow, determined to develop and thicken the plot for a final, tense scene that almost breaks down the movie. The Black Bag is a great watch for fans of structured film or simply spy fans that should definitely been seen by all this year.

Punch-Drunk Love is incredibly unique and intricate. PTA crafts a unique story around the complicated and confused Barry Egan. A repressed entrepreneur trying to thrive in the world of business.

It’s an almost uncomfortable story, drawing you into the life of Barry - watching his awkward interactions and his discomforting problems with the scammers. The film doesn’t hide Barry’s issues; it embraces them without apology, making a statement and being true about the harshness of reality and life.

Adam Sandlers performance is revelatory. He taps into deep vulnerability, portraying an emotionally lost man - balancing love, desperation, hate and anger. It’s one of his best roles that blends all of his talents. It has the comedic goofiness of his famous comedies such as grown ups but also his emotional energy seen knowingly in uncut gems.

Despite this the sound and score is what truly makes this movie magnificent. The film uses an abrasive score, with sharp, harsh sounds that mirror the tone of the movie and Barry muddled mental state. It adds to seemingly simple scenes - bringing them to another level and adding to the movie as a whole.

PTA has crafted an amazing movie balancing discomfort with poetry. Each component combines to create a memorable experience blending reality with typical romance alongside amazing production. Can’t recommend enough!
