If I had to confess, I can tell you that I hadn’t watched even a single Mission Impossible movies till maybe a few months ago. Even though I claim to be a movie lover, it is almost embarrassing that I still haven’t watched hundreds of popular movies and franchises because of lack of time between how busy my life has been over the years or because I am lazy.

Mission Impossible was one such, which honestly, I thought wasn’t my type. But then it had won over my heart, one by one with the movies I have watched, and I feel absolutely happy that I got to watch the last one in the big screen (first day first show at that even!) . It would have been a lost opportunity if I had missed this one.

As for the movie, honestly I am not very sure on reviewing this genre of movies to be honest, so I don’t want to ruin it. So let this be just a small quip of an unnecessary story nobody asked for lol.

Finally something good from Marvel after a very long time. Honestly I had zero hopes, and the only reason I went was because someone dragged me to it, but I am grateful. I wouldn’t really call it a “comeback” but it was still really fun to watch. The whole being woke and having elements of dealing with mental health issues felt a little too much on the nose though. Also, was it just me or did anyone else get reminded of “The Boys” every now and then?

Your favourite letterboxd is back y’all. (Cries in one digit number of likes)

Alappuzha Gymkhana was absolutely a BLAST to watch. I have watched a lot of sports dramas over the years, and I didn’t expect anything much more than all other typical ones, where the protagonist trains hard and wins all the medals. I absolutely loved this movie because it isn’t at all in the same trajectory.

After having a couple of absolutely horrible weeks, Alappuzha Gymkhana felt like I could relax, and just laugh out loud in the theatre. The humour probably doesn’t cater to all the generations, or isn’t as smooth as Gireesh AD’s work - but it still worked really well for me.

If I think about it, there isn’t anything extraordinary about this story. But for me, the characters carried the movie for me. Be it be their performances, delivery or sheer screen presence. Naslen and Lukman was good as always, but special appreciation for both Ganapathy and Anagha (ik she didn’t particularly have much role, and her acting per se looked kinda similar to most of her other roles - but boy, she looked so badass and hot) as well for their respective roles and especially pulling the action sequences really well.

The action shots were very well shot. Actually, the camera work in entire felt very creative and fresh and worked really well for me in so many ways. Music was also pretty dope tbh.

Khalid Rahman never fails to deliver, idk man, there is some magic about his works. So much potential. Really looking forward to more of his works. ♥️

My biggest question during the entire movie remained how Abraham Qureshi managed to wear so many layers (and that too black) in so much heat? Do you think he had tiny fans fixed inside his jackets?

——————————

On a serious note though, this turned out to be exactly what prayed to NOT to happen.

I honestly am not sure what I was expecting exactly. The overhypes and the too much talks over it, only scared me. I went in with having absolutely no expectations whatsoever, no reviews, no thoughts- maybe I think some part of me expected to be surprised or impressed.

For me personally, Empuraan didn’t deliver what it was promised to deliver. I wonder if it was a case where the movie wasn’t so widely promoted and hyped - would I and everyone else have the same opinion? I am not entirely sure.

It felt like they went for a big game, brought all big players to play, but then it rained and they all just got drenched. It looked like Prithviraj intended for something huge, but then the execution of the screenplay was very flawed. It got messy, and stretched out and tiring to watch at points.

I think the biggest complaint I have is definitely the character arc of Jathin Ramdas from Lucifer to Empuraan - I mean it felt more like he was made the sacrificial goat - but with no context or reason whatsoever. The other villains, even though had a good strong opening sequence, it felt more like a ‘cheeettipooya padakkam’ imo. It also felt like Prithviraj kinda lost track on who to focus on that it was everyone but also no one at all.

Moving on the strong parts, the technical aspects was indeed impressive, to just watch and enjoy. The music and background scores were strong. The action sequences, specifically the jungle one was actually pretty impressive. Mohanlal’s presence in screen, indeed was a marvel to watch, and I wish I got more of it.

Talking about other characters, definitely the whole lack of a spotlight on one particular person was a disadvantage- most of them actually did a very decent job. Even though it was anything particularly spectacular, it definitely was also fun to see international stars in a Malayalam movie.

Ithoke paranjenkilum, definitely did make sure I go first day inspite of actually not having time for it, and howled and whistled my lungs out for A10 through and through. (I am a loyal person)
For a mass commercial padam, it definitely had its moments and I had fun watching it. Compared to the ones that has been releasing in that category in other languages, this definitely is a huge step up.

P.S : “L” ichiri nalonam koodi poyi btw (yk what exactly I’m talking about) (maybe he was trying to tell us something all along, lol)

Edit : A note I forgot to mention. Very very ballsy of Prithviraj to pick this topic of all topics for one of the biggest commercial mass movies. I mean, I can already see the hate coming from now, but honestly I thought it was brilliant. Angry propaganda allegations loading, y’all.

Honestly I have a lot of complaints about this movie, majorly the plotline, but I have to also appreciate it for the technical aspects of the same.

The story line wasn’t something which we haven’t watched. However I think the performances by the cast, especially Kunchacko Boban was what elevated the movie. Chackochan’s intro scene, goddamn I flinched physically at the sight of that. That was prolly the most unbelievable scene expected from the all time “chocolate boy” of Malayalam industry. It also had some good screenplay and action scenes which were well choreographed.

Overall I think the movie definitely did excel in lot of places and very engaging even with the most overused theme.

P.S I have officially lost track of all the movies I haven’t logged.

Lowkey feeling proud I got to watch this yesterday, when it won 3 oscar awards hehe.

I have been really counting my days down to watch The Brutalist on the big screen, since I got to know PVR is releasing it. I wasn’t really sure what to expect though, and truth be told the 215 mins duration felt kinda scary.

But what an experience it was! I got to watch this, and I say this with so much glee - in the Kochi Laser Imax screen, in one of the best seats, and I was IMMERSED from the very first minute. Even with only 2-3 hours sleep the night before, I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen for the entirety of it.

The best part of the movie for the movie was, without any doubt the cinematography. It was absolutely BREATHTAKINGLY BEAUTIFUL. Be it from the first scene where you see him moving from inside the ship to the open sky to see the Statue of Liberty, be it the beautiful shots of the library, or the construction site or even the tiny things of him just riding a bicycle through the property. There was something about every frame, which makes you addicted to it.

The movie peels several themes, some obvious, some subtle. The story even though wasn’t anything unpredictable and had elements which has been used time and again (for example, the genius with the drug problem) - still did make an impact.

The music was SUCH a strong suit for the movie, making it more and more haunting. Not to mention, performances by the cast, especially Adrian Brody (well deserved Oscar indeed) and Guy Pearce.

I still feel extremely happy to have got this in big screen (along with so many other winners for the year - in IFFK or otherwise)

I still the first time I watched GIK, I watched it with my mom, and coming from a traditional orthodox family- it hit both of us pretty hard. We related to the disgust, we empathised to the hardships. I thought the movie was brilliant.

Years later, on discussion about the same with someone close gave me a new perspective. Now don’t mistake me, I still LOVE the movie. However I also acknowledge the flaws it had.

I feel maybe, Mrs. worked on few of its flaws. That’s kinda irable.

We have seen remakes in Bollywood of Malayalam movies over the past few decades, and it disappointing time and again. However one thing I was impressed about Mrs. was the fact that they took GIK and adapted it actually into the narrative of a north indian household. They took the same elements, the same story and put it in a different household, very flawlessly.

Compared to GIK, Mrs. is a little more brighter. The aesthetics of food is prettier, her career in dance is shown in a more important way. Now, you could take it in both ways - like it or feel that the vibrancy of the movie took away the greyness of the topic. Either way it is okay.

As much as I loved Nimisha in GIK, I thought that Sanya was beautifully brilliant here.

But did it hit me as hard as GIK did? Probably not.
I think I more or less appreciate the movie and the work they have done in comparison to liking it.

Did I travel 30km in Bangalore traffic ONLY to catch this movie in big screen. Yup.

Was it worth it? 10000% worth every second.

There is NO denying that Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha is a pivotal landmark in the Malayalam movie industry. The importance of that movie, and the sheer grandeur of it is one every malayali should experience. It is such a shame the number of sheer malayalis who haven’t watched this or aren’t willing to watch it.

From the very beginning scene, with the shots, the background music, the actor’s reaction- you literally get goosebumps on what they have achieved. The sets they have used, is absolutely beautiful. Not to mention the action sequences they, to this day seems to have held up, and is really well choreographed. Use of Kalari in action is definitely not a child’s game.

One other thing that really hit me was the beautiful music and the lyrics tbh. Talking about lyrics, I also have to mention MT’s writing, and the dialogues. Phewww. That last climax scene, with Ikka’s monologue - and how to this date, nobody seems to have forgotten about, proves my point.

Also, great work by actors. Ikka playing a young defeated warrior, and also an older person who seems to have given upon life, the amount of efforts he has put, is commendable. I also have appreciate other actors, especially Suresh Gopi, and Major Ravi for pulling of their role extremely well.

I can’t express how happy and satisfied I feel to have waited to watch this on big screen, and finally been able to do it as well.

Nosferatu is everything you hope to see in a period-gothic dracula movie, and more. I am exactly not sure how to review it per se, the movie actually was everything I was hoping for, without really knowing what I was hoping for (if that makes sense).

Huge shoutout to Robert Eggers for creating a setting sooo perfect, be it be the sets, the costume, makeup, hair, props etc. The scene where Hutter gets into the carriage, the beauty of that scene alone proves how well they worked for it.

Also, absolutely BRILLIANT performances by the entire cast, Lily Rose Depp impressed me more than I had hopes her, Willian Dafoe as usual never missing, but also Nicholas Holt, Aaron Taylor, Simon McBurney and rest of the ing cast. Bill Skarsgard was completely unrecognisable and I only realised it was him after I saw the cast list tbh.

The movie deserves huge appreciation and deserves the applause it has been getting. Definitely not one to miss in theatres.

P.S - Utter hate towards the bunch of girls who were sitting behind me for the movie, and giving their running commentary and opinions about every goddamn second of the movie. It was so fucking annoying I had to literally shushh them and give glares like some aunty. People need to fucking realise the theatre isn’t their ancestral property and stfu and watch the movie. If it wasn’t for this, I really for sure would have enjoyed the movie more than I already did.

( P.P.S - Thanks to my corporate slavery, I haven’t been able to watch any movies since January 1st, and it feels so hollow. )

Ok, did I miss something? I actually couldn’t get what was the huge deal about this movie, tbh. I am not saying it’s bad, but is it greattt? Probably not.

The strangeness of the concept, did intrigue me. A drug cartel lord in Mexico who wants to transition seeks help from a junior insignificant yet talented lawyer and the entire story made as a musical - how weird lol. However, certain things forced just for the sake of making the movie important.

Not regretting I missed this IFFK too much anymore.

Well, the movie was definitely fun to watch, no denial. DQ seems to have comfortably found his place in Telugu industry (a little sad to watch him move further away from Mollywood, but again he seems to enjoy and have developed a good fanbase there - so why not ig?), and definitely was a pookie throughout the movie.

If Scam 1992 was a milestone in financial drama genre in India, this definitely did what it was going for pretty decently. Unlike the series, they also made sure to not overcomplicate it with financial jargon and make it difficult to grasp for all audience. As someone from the financial sector, I do have slight technical icks myself, but it still was a job well done - it especially seems researched for basing the story in that time period ngl.

Merry (very red) Christmas Eve for me indeed.

Rating Marco seems like an incredibly difficult task, to be honest. The movie was promised to be the most violent in the Malayalam film history, and for that - they did keep up with it. It was action packed, violent and gory. They went all in, without giving no fucks whatsoever.

However there is no denying that the movie has some very evident and basic flaws. Be it be the dialogue writing or a very generic plot script or a better casting for Cyrus, Haneef really could have made it way more better imo.

The dialogues at several points were cringey or almost comical in a very serious situation, that I couldn’t stop myself from laughing. Be it be the forced English dialogues, cringey dialogues from Jagadish (“I am bisexual you know?” Like WHYYYYY?? I was physically cringing at that scene istg), or the immense corny introduction of Marco by the kids (“He is the devil… Daredevil” - ‘Pushpa flower allada fire aanu’ vibes only 😂).

The generic plot still could be looked past because it has been proven time and again that you could make a good movie with even that. But the casting for Cyrus specifically was a poor choice. Don’t get me wrong, Unni Mukundan also definitely can’t act - but here, there wasn’t anything that challenging for him to act because he played his strong suit of action. But the villain character literally had a single goddamn expression throughout his entire screen time and it was disappointing.

Now that we have crossed that, the movie definitely has to be appreciated for its action choreography, colour scheme/grading, and music. The action sequences at several points was incredibly very well done. One worthy mention would definitely be the inspired single action shot in the stairs - absolutely well done action, lighting and camera work. It’s not just that scene though, most of the action scenes, actually was done really well and Kalai Kingson deserves huge appreciation for it. The excellent use of very chilling and ominous tracks by Ravi Basrur was also a HUGE work well done for the movie.

All things said, this movie is definitely gonna be ed and remarked for how violent and disturbing it was - especially that one particular scene before the climax (which traumatised me fr). Even the scene itself might be hated by many for the principle of it, but I personally found the scene itself to be deep in ways of watching the invincible protagonist crumbling physically and mentally, unlike how most ‘larger than life’ characters stories are portrayed.

Ayyy ayyyy ayyyyyyy.

I have got to say, with the general genres Ashiq Abu sticks to I was incredibly skeptical of him in an action/mass padam script. But I am impressed, very well done job indeed.

That being said, the real star of this movie for me is without any doubt Rex Vijayan. It was TOP NOTCH music from literally scene one. Back to back banger sound tracks, which build sooooo much power and impact to the entire movie. Rex Vijayan completed this movie, and nobody can argue otherwise.

Now that we have got that out of the way, even though I have complaints about few things, which I will discuss later on - the movie itself was absolutely fun and incredibly entertaining to watch. It was stylish, sexy and definitely had some really peak moments. I mean, that one scene before the interval break, where Hanumankind shoots across the bar, and the entire Rifle Club just gives them a death stare, without blinking or being shaken, pheww.

I liked how they used the entire ensemble cast in a really good way, all of them giving brilliant performances. Special appreciation for Hanumankind for his debut - man, his entire screen presence was definitely something else. Everyone else too, Anurag Kashyap (finally a role that suites him well, and not forcing a language on him), Dileesh Pothan, Vishnu (really liking how good performances he has been delivering), Vijayaraghavan (he is on a roll, istg), Suresh Krishna (the one and only convincing star convincing his horrible ex wife to shoot right at a guy’s adam’s apple lol) and even Darshana, Surabhi and Unnimaya did full justice to their roles.

I also appreciate they didn’t end up killing someone for the sake of an emotional drama. However having said that, I do wish the climax itself was a little more mass, and they actually did bring out the big guns from the vault (hate how they just dropped the whole thing when it had so much potential). As much as the last scene with the entire club pointing their gun at Anurag was a good scene, I still felt like they made it a little too easy, you know?

But other than that, it definitely was absolutely a banger to watch.

P.S - Was I tripping or did the movie feel like it ended very fast?

As for Anora as a movie, the story itself isn’t anything new but it was definitely a VERY fun one to watch. It was hilarious , veryyyy engaging. IFFK - Day 1 - Nishagandhi (6:00 P.M)

A lot of external factors probably played a huge part in the movie experience I had for this one. When I say that, I mean it in a good and a bad sense. Watching a movie in an open theatre setting, with hundreds of movie buffs, all patiently watching and appreciating the movie around you in the midst of heat, sweat, the long opening ceremony, sitting on chairs or floors, later timing after already watching movies through the day was a first time experience for me personally (it is so amazing that despite all these conditions, the audience where soooo engaged, and that too for a foreign subtitled movie,  there wasn’t even a single disruption, just everyone immersed completely and leaving a full room applause).

The movie in itself, I can definitely understand the political appeal of it. Based on true stories from Brazil, and a very difficult and scary one at that, the crew has done a really good job in trying to put on screen, the events in an almost perfect way.

The performances by the cast (special mention to Fernanda Torres - an absolute GODDESS), really did make the movie more powerful, making it almost real for the audience. Surprisingly, one other thing that really elevated my experience was actually the music scores used - subtle and almost unnoticeable, yet in some way really hard hitting. I also definitely have to mention, the brilliant work of camera angles, aesthetics and frames throughout the movie.

Honestly, if not for the dragged out opening ceremony, I wouldn’t even have felt the slight drag in the pace here and there (ofcourse it is a historical political drama - the slow pace is a given) and would’ve enjoyed it more. Or even maybe, if I didn’t build my hopes way too much after seeing raving ratings and reviews - I could have had a better experience, I guess.

What an absolutely beautiful way to start my first IFFK experience.

Ann Hui’s July Rhapsody explores the midlife crisis of a teacher, stuck in a very complicated situation in his life.

The part that reallyy intrigued me in this movie has got to be how brilliantly Ann Hui handles the parallel timelines in the movie. She uses multiple elements such as lighting to make it incredibly smooth for the audience.

Even though a little slow for me for 20 mins or so in the second act, the movie did eventually pick up again, finishing with a really beautiful ending. The performances and the cinematography is also commendable.
