"What we really need is two bits,"
he says, looking up at me with still
some innocence showing in his eyes,
and I give him George Washington,
keep the Queen, while he dances away
to check with his buddies
and go on with the green light
across the rest of University Avenue,
wondering if I've done him any favour
setting him up for his next gut-puking drunk,
and have only this consolation:
it may help him hit the very bottom
just a little bit sooner, that bottom
you either bounce up off or stay under,
dead-weighted forever.

p.s. I'm well aware that "penis" might seem to eliminate the possibility of the inclusion of a hypothetical film featuring the infidelity of a transman with a woman and acknowledge there might possibly be no penis between this hypothetical couple. I acknowledge how unlikely we are to ever be given such a movie but in that unlikely event such a film is made I assure you it'll be welcome here : ) ⚧ boxd.it/1EQZ6

Honestly, I had no idea
you'd built new colonies,
slyly hidden underneath
the latest crop of weeds taking root
between the frost dividers
of our concrete driveway.

So I hope you'll pardon
the way the blades
of my hand-clippers tore
through your freeways and shopping-centres,
I'm sure killing many innocents
as this tornado swept through.

I certainly felt no joy
watching you scramble for dear life
in a hundred directions.

The next time we meet
I hope you won't be disturbed
or afraid if I watch the life
in the streets of your cities.

To The Ants In My Driveway by Raymond Souster collected in Close To Home

She kept three gardeners. Nevertheless, at night,
Her heart could hear the lopped vines crawling back
Over the lawn and up the gravel walk--
Could hear the fences groan with their looped wait,

And was afraid. By day she kept
The three men busy; clippers, mowers, rakes,
Helped her to keep the wilderness at bay.
But still at night she felt the grassy lakes

Put out new roots and move, the tender boughs
Of the cut hedges squirming out of line.
So, through the polished windows of her years,
She watched the sure collapse of her design,

Stared at the moon defeated, and grew cold
To learn at last how powerless she was.
For all her wealth, good manners, and defiance,
She lived alone in a surrounded house

And like the least of us grew old and weedy,
Felt her mind crumble like a wall of stones,
Heard the trees thicken as they stumbled toward her
And set their cracking weight upon her bones.

The Garden by Mary Oliver collected in The River Styx, Ohio

That hump of a man bunching chrysanthemums
Or pinching-back asters, or planting azaleas,
Tamping and stamping dirt into pots,--
How he could flick and pick
Rotten leaves or yellowy petals,
Or scoop out a weed close to flourishing roots,
Or make the dust buzz with a light spray,
Or drown a bug in one spit of tobacco juice,
Or fan life into wilted sweet-peas with his hat,
Or stand all night watering roses, his feet blue in rubber boots.
Old Florist from The Collected Poems of Theodore Roethke

I cut the seed and broke the stalk;
I split the leaf from crown to stem;
I tore the root and crushed the bloom
To strain the mystery out of them.

The frog was in my hands: I searched his beauty to the bones,
And worms I knifed, and creatures of the sea;
And feathers and the wind, rivers and rocks,
I opened to unfold their chemistry.

And out of books I learned a thousand names,
Habits and seasons of creatures and things that grow
Wild on the earth, until I thought there was
No fact of wilderness I did not know.

Thus was I taught, and put my books away,
And cool and casual in the early morning,
I stepped alone into the savage fields
Where Genesis assails me without warning.

If I were called in
To construct a religion
I should make use of water.
Going to church
Would entail a fording
To dry, different clothes;

My liturgy would employ
Images of sousing,
A furious devout drench,

And I should raise in the east
A glass of water
Where any-angled light
Would congregate endlessly

Their black truck rattled up the dusty hill;
They braked it, smoking, by the kitchen door
And shambled out: two men from Arkansas.

Booted and lean, they spoke a mountain drawl
Half song, half sleep, and laughed like men who know
Some marvelous joke they do not think to share.

Laughing, they cut two branches from a tree
And stripped the bark away. They did not seem
To notice how we snickered at their heels.

There were no rites; they only turned and moved
Slowly along the edge of the wild field.

A few larks fluttered up. Somewhere they paused, —
And suddenly we could not make a sound;

The sun kept beating at our eyes, and then
The peeled sticks dipped, and rapped upon the ground.

One by one they called and put the sticks
Into our hands, and led us through the field.

Some of us said we felt a kind of nudge,
But all of us walked blindly past the line
Where water lay, like ropes of buried light.

They drove away, half singing and half sleeping.
The sticks lay silent in the tangled grass,
And there we stood, confused, between two worlds.

We dug into the ground, hoping to find
Nothing. But the buried water rose

Out of the earth and tumbled down the field
As, overhead, we felt the darkness close.

False imprisonment or unlawful imprisonment occurs when a person intentionally restricts another person’s movement within any area without legal authority, justification, or the restrained person's permission. Actual physical restraint is not necessary for false imprisonment to occur. A false imprisonment claim may be made based upon private acts, or upon wrongful governmental detention. For detention by the police, proof of false imprisonment provides a basis to obtain a writ of habeas corpus. Under common law, false imprisonment is both a crime and a tort.

I will not shoot myself
In the head, and I will not shoot myself
In the back, and I will not hang myself
With a trashbag, and if I do,
I promise you, I will not do it
In a police car while handcuffed
Or in the jail cell of a town
I only know the name of
Because I have to drive through it
To get home. Yes, I may be at risk,
But I promise you, I trust the maggots
And the ants and the roaches
Who live beneath the floorboards
Of my house to do what they must
To any carcass more than I trust
An officer of the law of the land
To shut my eyes like a man
Of God might, or to cover me with a sheet
So clean my mother could have used it
To tuck me in. When I kill me, I will kill me
The same way most Americans do,
I promise you: cigarette smoke
Or a piece of meat on which I choke
Or so broke I freeze
In one of these winters we keep
Calling worst. I promise that if you hear
Of me dead anywhere near
A cop, then that cop killed me. He took
Me from us and left my body, which is,
No matter what we’ve been taught,
Greater than the settlement a city can
Pay a mother to stop crying, and more
Beautiful than the brand new shiny bullet
Fished from the folds of my brain.

He killed a fourteen-year-old girl. Papers said it was a crime of ion but he told me there wasn't any ion to it.

Meet John Doe • He’s Dead Or In Mortal Danger

another trope list, gendered for convenience, trans examples very welcome. bring on the plots. maybe they was killed, maybe they had it coming. maybe they just died. maybe they're merely in mortal danger of losing their one and only life. borne of the Troubled Lovers Under Pressure master list. If there's a wife, mother, sister, cousin, niece, mistress or some other gal, dame, woman or lady dead or in danger, recommend them.

Supposing rape is a good reason to murder someone I suppose this list should instead focus on more unreasonable reasons like jealousy and whatnot, revenge is a dish best served elsewhere:

It almost makes my day
the way her long hair tinted
the worst shade of yellow,
reaches down her back
and almost touches
the seductive wiggle
of her teen-age buttocks.

And all for free
as she makes her way
along the highway (not worrying
how close she comes to the traffic),
on this miserable strip
of the Lakeshore where still
some flea-bag sex-motels flourish.

The thought I'll it
comes much later: will her young body
be the next one found
(broken piece of driftwood),
washed up on Sunnyside Beach,
or slowly pulled out of the slime
of Ashbridge's Bay?

And all I lov’d—I lov’d alone—

promulgate (v.)
1520s, from Latin promulgatus, past participle of promulgare "make publicly known, propose openly, publish," perhaps altered from provulgare, from pro "forth" (see pro-) + vulgare "make public, publish." Or the second element might be from mulgere "to milk" (see milk (n.)), used metaphorically for "cause to emerge;" "a picturesque farmers' term used originally of squeezing the milk from the udder" [L.R. Palmer, "The Latin Language"].

The four hearse-horses, especially, reared and pranced, and showed their highest action, as if they knew a man was dead, and triumphed in it. "The break us, drive us, ride us; ill-treat, abuse, and maim us for their pleasure—But they die; Hurrah, they die! — Charles Dickens • Martin Chuzzlewit

More amazed than anything
I took the perfectly black
stillborn kitten
with the one large eye
in the center of its small forehead
from the house cat's bed
and buried it in a field
behind the house.

I suppose I could have given it
to a museum,
I could have called the local
newspaper.

But instead I took it out into the field
and opened the earth
and put it back
saying, it was real,
saying, life is infinitely inventive,
saying, what other amazements
lie in the dark seed of the earth, yes,

I think I did right to go out alone
and give it back peacefully, and cover the place
with the reckless blossoms of weeds.

"At menopause as never before a woman comes face to face with her own mortality. A part of her is dying. If she has been encouraged all her life to think of her reproductive faculty as her most important contribution, the death of her ovaries will afflict her deeply. Nothing she can do will bring her ovaries back to life. The grief of menopause affects every woman consciously or otherwise. The feeling that one’s day has ed its noon and the shadows are lengthening, that summer is long gone and the days are growing ever shorter and bleaker, is a just one and should be respected." — Germaine Greer • The Change

The term tokophobia was introduced in the medical literature in 2000. The word is from the Greek tokos, meaning childbirth and phobos, meaning fear. It is also known as "maleusiophobia" (though this is certainly a variant of "maieusiophobia", from the Greek "maieusis", literally meaning "delivery of a woman in childbirth" but referring generally to midwifery), "parturiphobia" (from Latin parturire, meaning "to be pregnant", and "lockiophobia".

Antinatalism, or anti-natalism, is a philosophical position that assigns a negative value to birth. Antinatalists argue that people should abstain from procreation because it is morally bad (some also recognize the procreation of other sentient beings as morally bad). In scholarly and in literary writings, various ethical foundations have been presented for antinatalism. Some of the earliest surviving formulations of the idea that it would be better not to have been born come from ancient Greece. The term antinatalism is in opposition to the term natalism or pro-natalism, and was used probably for the first time as the name of the position by Théophile de Giraud (born 1968) in his book L'art de guillotiner les procréateurs: Manifeste anti-nataliste

I don't want to own anything until I know I've found the place where me and things belong together. I'm not quite sure where that is just yet. But I know what it’s like.

www.goodreads.com/book/show/511608.Phaidon_Design_Classics

Objects may be partly autonomous and individual, but they can also summon the worlds to which they once belonged. They not only have a history that gives them their present shape, as with the axe-head, but can also revive the times to which they once belonged. A song can briefly reawaken a dead love, and a specific physical place might turn the calendar back 20 or 30 years. In this sense, objects are interrelated in a web of associations—but not all objects at all times. It takes special objects, evocative objects, like a madeleine or a rolling pin, for the symphony of memories to begin. To state lazily and fashionably that ‘‘everything is connected’’ would be to deprive specific objects of their specific powers. Our experience shows the opposite: namely, that one object evokes certain things and not others, and that some objects evoke nothing at all. Yet between certain objects there are bridges, footpaths, or resonant intervals that awaken vanished times. • Graham Harman reviewing Sherry Turkle’s book Evocative Objects: Things We Think With

"I felt that only brilliant conversation would save me from insanity, and knew that Ansell would not find me out if I had borrowed the brilliant remarks of others. I might have recited A Hundred Gems of Humour from end to end, and he would not have found me out. I sparkled a few minutes to myself, and then had to stop. Suicide seemed the only course, when Ansell began to talk." from Ansell by E. M. Forster

“...the most sparkling talker who ever comes to my house, and perhaps the most amusing. He dances like the will-o'-the-wisp where other people stick in the mud. Though his really kindred spirits are the most exotic people he can find, he also greatly enjoys a talk with some extremely commonplace person, when he pretends that he thinks they mean something which they never thought of in their lives. He can be by turns poetic, malicious, and nonsensical. His talk is very pictorial and he handles words as if they were paint on a brush. When Stephen is alone with one friend he is often drawn to speak of very grave and profound subjects, and then he becomes unhappy, for he is never sure about what he loves and believes in, and would like to love and believe in so much.” ― Edith Olivier, Without Knowing Mr Walkley

"You had to let him talk on, talk about everything, and try to isolate the dazzling things that escaped him. It was a meaningless verbal eruption with the histrionic and crazy gesticulations of a saint. To put yourself on his level, you had to divagate in his fashion, to utter sublime and incoherent sentences. A posthumous tête-à-tête, between imioned ghosts." E. M. Cioran, Anathemas and irations

I the No Vote campaign because it is a silent vote for constitutional reform. No vote means you have no confidence in whatever it is you’re served up. The present system is entirely and absolutely authoritarian – and nothing else. Electing the least of a hideous bunch always leads us to precisely the same unhappy place. The idea of a single President or Prime Minister is ludicrous to me, because you are absolutely giving the divine right to a single individual to do what they please to other living beings, and to define rights and wrongs, and to carry out such dealings away from any public scrutiny. Consequently, in the Middle East there never seems to be enough blood. The human race has grown more nervous, not less, under the current regimes, and elected political parties persistently show themselves to want nothing to do with the people once they get the public vote. MORRISSEY www.veganlogic.net/2014/09/morrissey-last-thing-security-forces.html

"When the modern corporation acquires power over markets, power in the community, power over the state and power over belief, it is a political instrument, different in degree but not in kind from the state itself. To hold otherwise - to deny the political character of the modern corporation - is not merely to avoid the reality. It is to disguise the reality. The victims of that disguise are those we instruct in error. The beneficiaries are the institutions whose power we so disguise." - J.K. Galbraith

When we mourn those who die young—those who have been robbed of time—we weep for lost joys. We weep for opportunities and pleasures we ourselves have never known. We feel sure that somehow that young body would have known the yearning delight for which we searched in vain all our lives. We believe that the untried soul, trapped in its young prison, might have flown free and known the joy that we still seek.

P.S. the atypical chronophilia is pedophilia, referring to sexual attraction to prepubescent children (no physical changes due to puberty). Hebephilia (some physical puberty changes, but still obviously immature) is becoming better known to researchers and the public. There are other lesser-known chronophilias, including attraction to infants or toddlers (nepiophilia) and sexually maturing teens who are not yet adults (ephebophilia). Ephebophilia can explain some cases of statutory rape involving “consensual” relationships between adults and teens who are under the legal age of consent. Other atypical chronophilias focus on middle-aged persons (mesophilia) or the elderly (gerontophilia). There is almost no research on mesophilia or gerontophilia, probably because acting on them is legal, as long as the other person consents.

"The human will to fuck"? Any animal can fuck. But only humans can experience sexual ion, something wholly different from the biological urge to mate. And sexual ion's endured for millennia as a vital psychic force in human life—not despite impediments but because of them. Plain old coitus becomes erotically charged and spiritually potent at just those moments where impediments, conflicts, taboos and consequences lend it a double-edged character—meaningful sex is both an overcoming and a succumbing, a transcendence and a transgression, triumphant and terrible and ecstatic and sad. Turtles and gnats can mate, but only the human will can defy, transgress, overcome, love: Choose. www.scribd.com/document/192676582/Hail-The-Returning-Dragon

Hecuba’s detective’s explanation is intriguing, at least to yr. corresps., because it helps explain part of the deep appeal of hard-core films, films that are supposed to be “naked” and “explicit” but in truth are some of the most aloof, unrevealing footage for sale anywhere. Much of the cold, dead, mechanical quality of adult films is attributable, really, to the performers’ faces. These are the faces that usually appear bored or blank or workmanlike but are in fact simply hidden, the self locked away someplace far behind the eyes. Surely this hiddenness is the way a human being who’s giving away the very most private parts of himself preserves some sense of dignity and autonomy—he denies us true expression. (You can see this very particular bored, hard, dead look in strippers, prostitutes, and porn performers of all locales and genders.) But it’s also true that occasionally, in a hard-core scene, the hidden self appears. It’s sort of the opposite of acting. You can see the porn performer’s whole face change as self-consciousness (in most females) or crazed blankness (in most males) yields to some genuinely felt erotic joy in what’s going on; the sighs and moans change from automatic to expressive. It happens only once in a while, but the detective is right: The effect on the viewer is electric. And the adult performers who can do this a lot—allow themselves to feel and enjoy what’s taking place, cameras or no—become huge, legendary stars. The 1980s’ Ginger Lynn and Keisha could do this, and now sometimes Jill Kelly and Rocco Siffredi can. Jenna Jameson and T.T. Boy cannot. They remain just bodies.

1520s, from Latin promulgatus, past participle of promulgare "make publicly known, propose openly, publish," perhaps altered from provulgare, from pro "forth" (see pro-) + vulgare "make public, publish." Or the second element might be from mulgere "to milk" (see milk (n.)), used metaphorically for "cause to emerge;" "a picturesque farmers' term used originally of squeezing the milk from the udder" [L.R. misogamy (n.) "hatred of marriage," 1650s, from Modern Latin misogamia, abstract noun from Greek misogamos "hating marriage;" see miso- + -gamy.

Time has transfigured them into
Untruth. The stone fidelity
They hardly meant has come to be
Their final blazon, and to prove
Our almost-instinct almost true:
What will survive of us is love.
— from An Arundel Tomb by Philip Larkin

infidelity (n.) c. 1400, "want of faith, unbelief in religion; false belief, paganism;" also (early 15c.) "unfaithfulness or disloyalty to a person" (originally to a sovereign, by 16c. to a lover or spouse), from French infidélité (12c.) or directly from Latin infidelitatem (nominative infidelitas) "unfaithfulness, faithlessness," noun of quality from infidelis "unfaithful, unbelieving" (see infidel).

matrimony (n.) c. 1300, matrimoine, "the married state, the relation of husband and wife, wedlock; the sacrament of marriage," from Old French matremoine "matrimony, marriage" and directly from Latin mātrimōnium "wedlock, marriage" (in plural "wives"), from mātrem (nominative māter) "mother" (see mother (n.1)) + -mōnium, suffix signifying "action, state, condition."

divorce (n.) late 14c., "legal dissolution of the bond of marriage," from Old French divorce (14c.), from Latin divortium "separation, dissolution of marriage," from divertere "to separate, leave one's husband, turn aside" (see divert). Not distinguished in English from legal separation until mid-19c. Extended sense of "complete separation, absolute disjunction" is from early 15c.

marriage (n.) c. 1300, mariage, "action of entering into wedlock;" also "state or condition of being husband and wife, matrimony, wedlock;" also "a union of a man and woman for life by marriage, a particular matrimonial union;" from Old French mariage "marriage; dowry" (12c.), from Vulgar Latin *maritaticum (11c.), from Latin maritatus, past participle of maritare "to wed, marry, give in marriage

wedlock (n.) Old English wedlac "pledge-giving, marriage vow," from wed + -lac, noun suffix meaning "actions or proceedings, practice," attested in about a dozen Old English compounds (feohtlac "warfare"), but this is the only surviving example. Melancholia or melancholy (from Greek: µέλαινα χολή melaina chole, meaning black bile) is a concept found throughout ancient, medieval and premodern medicine in Europe that describes a condition characterized by markedly depressed mood, bodily complaints, and sometimes hallucinations and delusions. Melancholy was regarded as one of the four temperaments matching the four humours. Until the 18th century, doctors and other scholars classified melancholic conditions as such by their perceived common cause – an excess of a notional fluid known as "black bile", which was commonly linked to the spleen. Between the late 18th and late 19th centuries, melancholia was a common medical diagnosis, and modern concepts of depression as a mood disorder eventually arose from this historical context.

Specifically, those who have an IQ between 0 and 25 are idiots; IQs between 26 and 50 are considered imbeciles; and those who have an IQ between 51 and 70 are considered morons.

Before “Down’s Syndrome” was called such, people with Down’s syndrome were called “Mongolian idiots” and the syndrome itself was called “mongolism”. This comes from the fact that people thought that Down’s syndrome individuals resembled Mongolians.
In Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, New Mexico, and Ohio, idiots don’t have the right to vote.
Ironically, the term retarded was used to replace the idiot, moron, and imbecile due to the fact that these gradually became thought of as derogatory. This obviously only worked for a while and now “retarded” is itself considered a derogatory term. It seems any word that basically means “low intelligence” is fated to be thought of as derogatory eventually. So it’s only a matter of time before politically correct like “mentally handicapped” will come to be derogatory themselves.
Retarded comes from the Latin “retardare”, which means “to make slow, delay, keep back, or hinder”. The first record of its use for someone considered mentally deficient was in 1895.
The first IQ test was created by French psychologists Alfred Binet and Theodore Simon in 1911. This initial test measure intelligence by having children point to their nose and count pennies.
In California, idiots are one of six types of people who are not capable of committing any form of crime. In 2007 the term “idiot” was replace with “persons who are mentally incapacitated” in the California legal wording of the penal code on this issue.
The word “moron” was coined in 1910 by psychologist Henry H. Goddard and was derived from the ancient Greek word “moros”, which meant “dull”.
“Idiot” derives from the ancient Greek, “idio”, meaning “person lacking professional skill” or “mentally deficient person incapable of ordinary reasoning”.

Unlike SOME PEOPLE on this site with their miserable little lists who thought it was perfectly reasonable to employ mental illness as an umbrella for movies about cults and bereavement and healthcare and physical disability and suicide and memory etc etc etc! The motto of the Globe Theatre in London was Totus mundus agit histrionem; “The whole world is a playhouse.”

It's true I crept the boards in my youth but I never had it in my blood and that's what so essential isn't it? Theatrical zeal in the veins. Alas, I have little more that vintage wine and memories. It is the most shattering experience of a young man's life when he awakes and quite reasonable says to himself: I will never play The Dane. When that moment comes, one's ambition ceases. Don't you agree?

Vanity surely played a part in my preferring acting in films to the theater. But I enjoyed the fact that in a film the role and my performance were indissoluble, one and the same; while, in the theater, the same role has been and will be performed by many actors. (Are the films in this respect more like life than is the stage?) Also—another incentive to vanity—what one does in a film is recorded and as imperishable as celluloid; while performances in the theater are without record. I also preferred the cinema to the theater because there is no audience present except one’s working colleagues, and no applause. In fact, not only is there no audience, there is really no acting either. Acting in films is not like acting in a play, which is, whatever the interruptions of rehearsal, in performance continuous, cumulative, and replete with consummated movement and emotion. What is called acting in the films is, on the contrary, much closer to stillness, to posing for a sequence of still photographs like those in monthly roman-photos read by shop girls and housewives. In a film every scene is subdivided into dozens of separate shots, each of which entails no more than a line or two of dialogue, a single expression on the actor’s face. The camera creates motion, animates these brief frozen moments—like the eye of the dreamer inhabiting and at the same time being a spectator to his own dreams. • The Benefactor by Susan Sontag
