Keep your concentration here and now, where it belongs

The mix of film and digital, real and surreal. Transcendent third act. It loses its propulsion after the podrace but picks up again once the battle of Naboo starts so that's only a minor complaint. Lucas has such a specific style here that I don't think he even tries to replicate in the other two because they also have their own unique style. The Fordian sunset on Coruscant when the council interviews Anakin is just immaculate.

We must all have waffles forthwith

Saying Coen movies like this, Burn After Reading, Intolerable Cruelty or Hail, Caesar are “bad” and movies like No Country for Old Men, Fargo and The Big Lebowski are “good” is to ignore the wide spectrum of absurdity that they operate in. They approach all this material with the same childlike joy and wonder of having just watched a bunch of classics, and want to perform their own pastiche of it. That’s to say,…

Cutting Class

You’re not cutting class I hope!

Weird little teen sex-comedy and slasher mix that really doesn’t find its footing until it’s final moments. But a young Brad Pitt does some all-time signature finger-pointing and there are some standout character actors doing their thing.

Maple liked the chase scene at the end. Other than that, we were both pretty unimpressed with this, the only interesting thing being the killing sequences.

Because wherever he goes, the silence of death follows

I could gush about The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly all day, but I think I I’ve finally found a Spaghetti Western that rivals it. Instead of the iconography and massive scale of GBU, The Great Silence is quiet, intimate and primarily takes place in one town, as opposed to the whole of the west. It’s not without its moments of fun, but the violence and thematic depth is much…

All my life, I've searched for gold. And this man is full of it

There’s a scene where characters are just shouting “Evan!” for like two minutes straight that kind of threw me off guard. An interesting gothic horror nihilistic plate of pasta that’s constantly subverting Spaghetti tropes and features symbolism to Italy’s history. Watched best at night after a long exhausting day to fully appreciate the hallucinating nature of the cinematography and editing.

Never shoot into the sun

I’m glad this wasn’t billed as a Sartana flick with Garko, because A) this guy is nothing like Sartana and B) not enough Garko. Decent gunplay and amazing score, but the only highlight is Garko and Berger’s chemistry, which again, not enough of.

Watched this on Plex and the sound and picture quality was horrible. Found out after I finished it that there’s a version on YouTube that is way better. 🤦‍♂️

Does anybody have any questions?

Yeah, one (1) - how is this so good? I got the vinyl for this tour a few days ago and it made me want to rewatch this hard. Came back from the bathroom to find Hayley had thrown it on. I knew I married her for a reason.

Anyway, this is great, just as good as in a theatre, plus this time I actually knew the songs. It’s on Crave, do yourself a favour and watch this, guaranteed smiles and vibes all the way. Great stuff.

This was going crazy in my living room. I can’t imagine how crazy this would’ve gone in a packed theatre 100 years ago.

Show me the money

The salesman in me was more lenient on this and kinda drowned out my critical side. I think it’s all over the place and not cohesive at all but I enjoyed it anyway. I can tell this is definitely the blueprint for Moneyball (the movie), whose source material I’ve been reading on my lunch breaks because Moneyball (the book) would not translate well if it were straight adapted.

Please let me get what I want this time

Rhythmic and lyrical with its poppy images, snappy and quotable dialogue, great outfits and cool scenes that just ooze aesthetic pleasure. Once you get used to the free form construction as narrative structure and get used to its flow, just enjoy the ride. Explaining this to Hayley I found myself comparing it to if Miami Vice-era late 80’s Michael Mann directed a comedy because I couldn’t think of a better example - it definitely took inspiration from the show.

Have not seen Breathless yet but if it is similar to this I can see myself loving it.
