I don’t think this works as a whole, but there are genuine moments of insight and crystal clear vision. This is difficult to rate, and not just for the same reason that anything about real human atrocity is, but because the project itself is formally ambitious, which I respect, however I found myself very disconnected which led to disinterest. You could debate all day on whether that’s the point or not - I personally wouldn’t because that would be giving more time of day to something I really have no care for.

Everyone should have a superiority complex

Went in with no knowledge about the events, expected very little, but was very impressed with the outcome. Certainly standard genre-fare, but the central performance is too good to not elevate it, and I could watch Jodie on-screen for hours doing anything, I think she’s so captivating. Pleasantly surprised, and the ending got me 🥲 even though that was the last thing I was expecting to happen during this film.

You were always the dream

Not nearly as bad as everyone made it out to be, but certainly lower tier Pixar. I like the story, and it’s certainly different enough that it’s worth telling, but I think it falls apart when looking at it from a more thematic lens.

Despite the snubs for best animated (TMNT being one), I think this definitely deserves a nom over Boy and The Heron
