Work Done
Here’s my first, relatively thought out attempt at a list of films, prompted by friends and shaped by many. For me it remains more initiatory than investigative, more taken by breadth than by depth, even though more than half of these either are no longer recent discoveries or are not my introduction to a filmmaker / a phase in their trajectory / the context of production–reception they have been existing in. The rest I have come to know only within this month; they are films whose intelligence, immensity and humility managed to get through to me at a fine speed. I consider these ten (a more or less arbitrary limit, adopted by convention) films where the work done by the director and the work done for their direction exist on irably equal , where labor is as much the subject of the film as it is the film itself, where almost every detail throws me directly into a profusion of speculations about how it has been chosen and used, why it has been chosen and used. Where, in short, it has left me marked for days by the lingering, intermittent sense that mediation is possible.
The notes below, in Vietnamese and written two days ago, were a previous attempt to draw out something common in these good films, something that made me put them side by side and tell others that I did. I do not think I have succeeded at all in doing so.

Điều dường như phát sinh trong mấy tuần qua cho phép mình nói chung về mười phim ở đây là tính chu kỳ: mỗi phim đều chứng kiến sự khơi mào và thoái lui của một bước ngoặt tạm thời (từ nguyên của “revolution” cũng có “volvere” nghĩa là xoay vòng) trong quan hệ liên thời giữa tự nhiên/xã hội và con người, hay cũng là giữa chất liệu và đạo diễn.
Qua các đề xuất thể thức rất khác nhau cho những bối cảnh cũng rất khác nhau, mà không thể thiếu đây đó những trùng lặp, tiếp nối: mỗi phim là một luồng cung ứng thời gian sao cho vật tính và nhân tính khi va chạm (qua hình hài và sóng âm cơ thể, lát cắt, cú chuyển máy) bỗng tuôn trào khả năng đáp ứng, tạo môi trường cho nhau biến đổi mà không bao giờ hoàn toàn hòa lẫn: nói “lao động”, hay việc đong đếm (“đấu”) khi có nhiều hơn một lực kéo, đẩy tài nguyên (“tranh”), có lẽ chính là có ý này.
Mình sẽ còn phải nhìn lại những thứ, những lựa chọn đã được duy lý ở đây!
