Kept wondering where the zombies were until I checked my notes and realized this was the real version.

Pride and prejudice adapts a classic romance tale for the big screen. It tells the story of Elizabeth Bennett and her extended family of sisters, sometimes cousins, parents, aunts and uncles when navigating society in the English countryside Until the enigmatic Mr Darcy enters into their lives. There is romance, societal shame and Intrigue and so much more.

Well cast and acted. Great score and Cinematography. Great editing. More time and more backstory would have put this over the top.

Bad Shabos is a fun 85 Minute comedy with a bunch of faces you'll recognize and some you might even know names of but that just works on chemistry level and on an fun to watch without a ton of details kind of way.

David and Meg are a Jewish and soon to be Jewish engaged couple going to this week's Shabos dinner. The catch: Meg's parents are in town from Milwaukee to participate in a Shabos and meet David's Family. Essentially Jewish Meet the Parents with a more Sony Picture Classics feel. The problem is things go from moderately nervous to very bad very quickly and all before Megs parents arrive. Between trying to figure out the manifest ways to handle the problem in the most I love Lucy ways they can with the help of the doorman (Method Man) and not a lot of time to do it, Bad shabos squeezes a bunch of fun and some laughs out of its run time.

The film could have used a little more time and just a little bit more fleshing out of a few characters. I think 100 minutes would have been the sweet spot. Still good. Still worth a watch and judge for yourself :)

Regal Mystery Movie Monday 5/19/25

Pretty good but not better than talk to me. When two kids lose their father violently they get taken in by a foster care mom with a very odd child already in her possession. Laura (foster mom), is overly interested in Piper her Blind new step daughter and seems to want to get the brother: Andy, kicked out so she can have Piper all to herself all while the other child Oliver lurks the hallways.

The tone is eerie. The premise is ok but the execution is not as good as it possibly could be. The look of Oliver is definetly good. The whole cast is small but talented and well utilized. This was just a mixed bag. Good in lots of parts but just not well connected parts.

Let's be clear, I like the weekends Music. But I think after seeing this he should Stay in his lane. The story is a caricature of his life with a bad breakup making him unable to perform until he meets a new woman who he has an figurative acid trip with all while finding excuses to perform songs from his new album.

I liked the music. I liked the visuals. And I liked the choice of actors. But the cohesion in story or storytelling isnt there and the film just isnt relatable or enjoyable.

Definetly one of the Best Final Destinations, the creators must have been long time fans with lots of references and callbacks but as Eater eggs so if you didn't know them you weren't penalized for it (I knew them but I have when sequels box out new fans).

Imagine you have nightmares that are really past visions of a relative dying in a horrible way but the same relative had those same visions at the time and used them to save a bunch of people and then tons of lives were created that weren't supposed to be and death who apparently has assburgers and needs everything to be a certain way so he starts going thru and and killing off the people who survived and the people that are associated to them to preserve what he thinks is supposed to be the natural order. Welcome to the origin of the entire franchise and the last (we'll second to last) family on the list of course corrections and the ridiculous deaths lobbed at them with a touch of Tony Todd's Last cinematic performance and you have the best Final Destination since the first.

Id be OK if this is where they end. It was a good conclusion and satisfying whether you are a long term fan or coming in now. A mix of Horror and humor and just about 100 minutes not counting trailers, an enjoyable film from start to finish.

Not your Typical Indian Movie. Based on a true story. Superboys of Malegaon tells the story of 4 friends from a small town in India whose love and dreams of film making become a reality after being busted for a piracy scheme.

The film isnt bollywood. Its not song and dance. Its not lighthearted. It feels like it could Happen, which makes sense since jt did.

Friendships are tested when working on large-scale projects like making a movie. People don't always get along. Marriages in India aren't always simple to create or lavish. Not everyone makes out alive and has a happy ending. Sometimes it takes years to achieve goals.

Everything I've said above happens and it's for those reasons that this movie is so good plus many more. When we speak of reality television or movies this is what we should be aiming for. Its sad that adaptations or fictionalized s are often more appealing "Reality".

My only minor issue the dubbing. Its done in a way that was either intentional to be comical or bad due to lack of experience. I'm not sure which it was but it was noticeable.

Other than that I think anyone who appreciates film and has ever struggled at any point in life can enjoy.

Saw the 4k Restorstation of this at Regal.

The imagery was beautiful. At some points i couldn't tell if I was seeing real forest or mountains or ocean or animated the visuals were that good.

Wolf Children is a story of two people who fall in love. One a Woman and one a wolf man. Though their romance is short lived they create two half wolf half human children and the challenges raising them are real. In time Hana (the Mother) moves then to the countryside so they can live freely and choose what kind of life they want. I think the sentiment is real but i don't think Hana has a concept for what she is truly setting herself and her children up for.

The film has so many things it deals with and it does it well: The hardships of single parenting, the hardships of becoming a first time farmer, young love, unconventional education, and so much more.

The film weaves a story up through the kids hit about middle school age and while it's a happy ending ish it definetly finds a sad way to get there as animes are want to do. Definetly recommend if you like good anime Movies.

Shadow Force is a pretty typical Action movie. Two spies on the same team fall in love, have a baby and desert their team for a life on the run because being part of their black ops team required them to sign an agreement that the only way out was death.

Good cast. Good acting. So so blah and trope ridden story with just not alot in the way of substance. Some good humor and there. Good music choices. Nothing anyone needs to run and see. Definetly more like a "put on in the background and look up every once in awhile while doing something else" movie.

Sorry guys I'm with the Ones on this one but review isnt that simple.

So this is a modern ish reimaigining:it's still set in the right time period and everything but more understandable language for the average viewer and lots of original pop songs. This feels like if Disney made a high school musical Romeo and Juliet edition but didn't have Disney money as the sets look good sometimes and then as if they are on a crappy stage other times.

Also and this was a major issue, If you have any kind of ear for music the Terrible lip syncing/dubbed over prerecorded music will drive you as mad as it did me. I had to look away alot.

The acting was ok. The cast list was good but the better actors didn't have much screen time. The ending is different than the actual story which was wild. And it was too long.

Ok all the bad aside...I'd watch this again. Its like so bad I can't look away. I might watch it again to study all the bad in depth. But even wilder they a sequel at the end. I've scoured the internet and can find nothing about the sequel so idk if it's real or they are trolling us like at the end of Kung Pow but I would watch the sequel just to see where they are going...

Billed as a sort of true story 3 friends embark on a journey to get money back from a crypto creator who steals money from all his investors and fakes his death to run away with the funds. The story starts lighthearted and funny but pivots to a suspense thriller that doesn't have a happy ending per se. I wouldn't call the movie interesting but aspects of it are intriguing.

Honestly the best scene in the movie is when they are buying guns at shopmart. Not really relevant to anything just funny and a nice break from the forthcoming tension.

The back half is more suspenseful and does employ a common trope of separate your enemies by pitting them against each other. The ending isnt predictable but I'd say it's not shocking based on what proceeds it.

It was ok but nothing anyone NEEDs to watch.

Its pretty bad. The acting is so so. Lot of plot conveniences. Some faith based stuff at the end. Just alot of things that wouldn't happen for real.

By Happenstance they all find themselves away from home during a bachelor weekend as we see the different facets of their lives mesh. Some interesting moments but nothing ground breaking here. I really don't want to say too much about this because this is the type of movie that's best experienced and not read about it.

Just imagine a fucked up fever dream set in Australia with Nicholas Cage driving the vehicle and surfing being the backdrop but it could literally be anything.

The film keeps you guessing about what's real and what isn't. It isnt overly long just north of 100 minutes but it really all gets there in the last 15 minutes.

Nicholas Cage is just on fire. He's at that point in his career where he can take any role and do it justice kinda like Willem defoe.

Such a Fun Movie. Thunderbolts* is almost..the antithesis of the Marvel's. Now here's the thing... I liked the Marvels, but I'm a Marvel Shill. I watch all their content and that film relied heavily on paying attention to all of Marvel's content for that film to be satisfying. The reason most people didn't like it is subconsciously they didn't understand all the references so they felt confused and confusion often manifests as anger.

The thing about Thunderbolts is on paper it should have the same issue. Its characters stem from: Black Widow, Ant Man 2, Falcon and Winter Soldier, The Cap Movies, The Avengers movies, a Slew of Post Credits scenes and any number of other little references. It should be very confusing. But the characters, story, acting and direction are done so well...none of that matters. The story works on its own or as book end to all those things. It introduces new characters, fleshes out old ones, closes up some stories and sets up many more all while doing it with an asterisk.

Thunderbolts takes a set of black bag characters and throws them at each other with the hope they will kill each other. But when they land in a vault with a failed experiment that isn't really failed they must band together to save themselves and eventually New York City. In the process they become closer, and become something the marvel universe hasn't had in about 6 years.

The film has irreverent humor and makes use of everything well except one thing. Team movies are hard to juggle characters but while it set up some characters well, some could have used a bit more setup and they all could have a bit more pay off in the Void vs only 2 characters being explored there and the rest being sort of glazed over.

Other than that New Avengers was a great movie...Oops. Well..how about that post credits scene tho am I right?

Mystery Movie Monday 4/28/25

Cool Concept, Poor Execution.

Clown in a Cornfield has the hallmarks of a decent bit of slasher films but with some more modern sensibilities. While it's a fun watch for those enjoy a good bad horror movie it definetly leans closer to the bad than good.

The story is thin. The acting is OK with some funny bits but mostly you could feel the simplistic writing conveyed through the actors. Always happy to see Will Sasso. The threat is very natural and while that's the choice of the writer I think supernatural would have served this better.

Essentially a father and daughter move to a town in the middle of nowhere that's fallen on hard times and at the start of a semi generational culling killing spree. The actions of most characters are relatively consequenceless while some characters reap the consequences of nothing they've done. The mystery is eventually revealed in scooby doo villain exposition style and not before an ending with a massive plot hole.

Not saying not to watch this but just don't expect much. There is such a thing as enjoying a film with flaws but that means you need to expect the flaws.

Wow I had to watch this for a podcast tonight and I had no idea what i got myself into. This isn't bad, it's baaaaaad. I like camp as much as the next person but there's a limit.

The connections to this and d&d are tenuous at best. The CGI is very not good. The acting and story are just trite and laughable except Jeremy Irons and a little bit of Marlon Wayans.

The only way this es any level of enjoyment is with Nostalgia glasses for someone who has associated memories to their first time seeing it.

The story follows an eventually formed group who are out to find a mystical object before an evil mage and his cadre of cronies get it and take over the land.

What follows is predictable hero actions, a Pseudo love story, a death of a friend, bad guy banter and the heroes winning only to be turned to light orbs at the end for no adequately explained reason.

I saw another reviewer call this a steaming pile of dragon shit. Seems right.

Id say this was on Par with the original. It was good and enjoyable, not necessarily for all the same reasons but given i only watched 1 for the first time this week thr original feelings are still very fresh for me.

The ant 2 finds our titular anti hero living out of a trailer traveling the world still doing ing jobs for the worst of the worst while also killing bad people when they cross his path. He's also more focused on a relationship in this movie going so far as to attend speed dating partly with the desire to meet someone but mostly to prove he can run the numbers on anything.

The film introduces us to several connected plots including a death of a past character, the introduction of a new character whose a hit woman, a team of kids now aiding the ant with his original handler, the reintroduction of Jon Bernthal his brother, and a mystery regarding a missing immigrant family from years ago.

The film juggles these well finding a way for them to all flow. The only real issue is the villains. There are a few and while ones motivations get explained it's mostly an afterthought while several of the others have no real motivation for their actions. It's not the biggest problem but it does stand out.

Overall a worthwhile watch for fans of the original.

Probably one of the better video game adaptations you'll see provided you played the game, liked the game, and wanted this movie to adapt aspects of the game to it's story. In fact I was worried from the trailers it was just another movie that took a games name but wouldn't share any similarities with it.

Until dawn finds a group of youngsters looking for one of their sisters who goes missing in nearby glore Valley. What they find is a cursed house that forces them into dangerous and spooky circumstances over and over dying each night but waking with memories of what has occurred but they soon realize it isn't an unlimited number of deaths and after a certain number they will transform into creatures and lose the ability to come back to life and become part of the night and the valley.

The film does very well with sound and eerieness. Albeit not to the same level but inserts some amount of minor humor and tongue and cheek moments akin to Evil Dead 2. I also thought the makeup and detail on the various creatures was great and inventive.

I found it enjoyable but not without issue. There are definetly gaps in information in the story which some could argue are just the movie being an ambiguous horror movie but for the level of detail they forced the characters into any info about how and what was causing the animation of creatures/rebirth of the main characters/the immunity of Dr Hill. If they do a sequel this could be good info to explore if not itll feel like they forgot to fully fledge the film out.

Prepping for ant 2 tommorrow. I really enjoyed this. Great star power: Affleck, Kendrick, Simmons, Lithgow, Bernthal and more.

A High Functioning Autistic man is both students Forensic ant and a methodical eraser of bad people, mostly who he has cooked books for. The film jumps around between past and present but the gist is ultimately Affleck is hired to cook the books for a large scale medical tech company but who attempts to kill one of their own (Kendrick). Affleck discerns the mystery of their book and tries to keep her safe all while attempting to take out the bad guys but not without his brother being a force of death in the background as well...until he isn't (Bernthal). I think the action and story were great. I think Kendrick and Affleck is too unbelievable especially with their age gap. Action was good. The autism faces were interesting. Really curious to see where they go with 2.

Regal Mystery Movie Monday 4/21/25

Legend of Oshi was cute. It tells the story of monsters in the carpathian mountains that a villager has a personal vendetta against and rallies a militia to kill them including his daughter. His daughter befriends a Baby Ochi and she resigns to return to it's home deep in the valleys beyond her home.

Essentially ET but with a supernatural monster instead of an Alien. Talents like Willem Dafoe and Fynn Wolfhard and more. Not bad but nothing crazy. A24 is good but i think being PG hurt them. I think they work better when unrestrained and playing to a specific age group is hard.

Cute Movie about sneakers that's basically a toy story 2 rip off starring Miles Morales except his mom looks younger than him.

The animation was mostly not great. The story was thin. The voices were good. The music was good. Idk this was kinda all over the place.

A kid wins a pair of exclusive sneakers in a contest and when a rich collector won't take no for an answer he steals the shoes only the shoes come to life or all shoes are sentient in this world and they escape on their own but are separated. What follows is the sneakers trying to find each other. Edson their owners trying to find them. The collector trying to find them. Eventually it all comes to a head but not in any way that makes sense except in a kids movie.

I just found it wild that I heard the N word twice in an animated kids PG movie (They were in songs in the movie but you'd think someone would check for that).

Didn't know this was a remake so now I have ti check that out to compare.

So I liked it but i definetly thought I'd like it more.

Pros: Great Cast, Well Acted, Good Twist especially given how trailers often ruin movies these days it went the other way which was cool.

Cons: Min's English is either not good or was dubbed in a movie where everyone else spoke English themselves so it was jarring. Also and I say this as a member of the LGBT Community and without trying to Offend but this Movie was too gay. What I mean is every couple was gay. Every one that wasn't was an ally. It felt like the Asian version of Bros. But what i mean is you can portray gay couples without making it seem like they only exist in a world with other Gay People and this didn't do that.

Story wise it starts like a sit com. One couple is working on Invitro and not doing well. Another has a member who needs to get married to maintain citizenship. The two agree to help each other with surprising results (in some aspects) and predictable results in other senses. It's cute and funny and interesting don't think anyone who wants to see it will regret seeing it but it's definetly not required theater viewing.

Sinners feels like some combination of Demon Knight + Dusk till dawn set in the 1930s Misissippi Delta + idk what else but just good stuff.

Sinners tells a handful of stories but it tells them all well. A tale of 2 brothers who want to make their dreams come true. A Tale of a preachers son who wants to play Music and escape his life. A Tale of a community where everyone knows each other and they all (mostly) want to live and enjoy life while ing each other. The thing is this all could just be a period piece by Ryan coogler without adding a horror elements and be just as good but it adds the horror elements and somehow makes it better.

Told over one day and night the story finds a town enjoying a new club being brought to life by the two brothers (both played by Michael b Jordan) and their young musician cousin. The day is all about the prep but the night...the night is more than the party it's also about a Vampire...then two Vampires...then 4 Vampires and on and on. Music...very good and soulful Music can transcend all that way know and creatures that are beyond what we know are drawn to it like a siren song and when you pit humans and Vampires against each other with not much in the way of defense the number of those who will survive is...limited.

Music. Camera. Make up. Period piece attire and design. Everything about this was wonderful. Coogler knows his craft know matter the genre I'm convinced.

The only issue if I have any is minor but does matter. In a film with established types of creatures like Vampires there is lore and mythology and things we as viewers know about. Vampire killing and weapons are something that we would have easy access to knowledge wise by way of pop culture. In 1930s Delta, a world dealing with a post world War and Klu Klux Klan it just felt like a plot Convenience to have the one person around who knows about Vampires and how to fight them in exactly the right place in time. Yes she's a voodoo woman but still. I think the idea of having to fight the Vampires with no knowledge how to win would have made this perfect.

Still very great. Highly recommend. There is a post credit scene that is really a great way to tie it all up. Run and see it now!

This movie definetly tried juggled alot. It felt like watching a progression of paintings. Not so much a story but beautiful visuals spanning different stages of a life.

Parthenope is set in Italy in the late 50s and runs through all the way to the 2020s. It detaisl the life of a very beautiful girl and her life and the various people that find her beautiful and what they want from her and to give her all while watch her try to chart a life of her own without the desire to be treated like an object or someone who can't succeed at legitimate endeavors. She seeks a career as an Anthropolgy teacher but not before losing different people to time. Some more untimely than others. The woman is beautiful the losses are sad but as an a24 movie there is def room for more raw and real storytelling in more of the film that feels instead tame.

Fun enjoyable indie Italian flick with some room to grow.

Idk this movie had British charm, a cute love story but not the one you expect, a surprising ending based on tropes, and just one of those fun indie movies most theaters won't get and probably should.

Fuck you Bob Trevino.

Fuck you for hitting the pulse of anyone who has dysfunctional relationship with both their parents.

Bob Trevino Likes it deserves to be watched by everyone. It's funny. It's sad. It's relatable. It tells the story of Lily. A Girl Who never really grew up. I don't mean like in IF so you can continue to see imaginary Friends, I mean her mother ran out on her and she got raised by a narcissistic father who essentially tolerated her stunting her growth as an adult and a person overall preventing her from having good friendships, relationships, worthwhile goals or a basic understanding of how to live.

When her father Bob Trevino, disowns her she has a chance meeting with another Bob Trevino (leguizamo) who in turn is also suffering some late in life friendship and work issues and who needs Lily as much as she needs him. What follows is a budding relationship. Not romantic. But almost a familial love. More than this is can't say. It's just raw and visceral and you need to experience it. Watch the trailer that'll tell you what you need to know.

I loved it. I'll be really shocked by anyone who watched this in full and didn't like it. B

I went into this relatively mild expectations. I figure it's a wartime film but it is also A24 so it could be good and A24 does not usually disappoint and this was no exception.

War films usually are very formulate. This was like the reality version of war film. The quiet moments. The real moments. The moments where a commanding officer loses his ability to lead because he freaks out. Things don't go everyone's way and the film doesn't have a happy ending. The scenes are brutal and graphic and scary because they really make your stomach turn as you feel as if you are side by side with these men.

Everything about this works. The shots and angles. The sounds. The way everything plays out and how they used real military vets and consultants to make this as accurate as possible since it was based on a true story. Set in 2006 Afghanistan, Warfare is beautiful because it's ugly and it works.

It seems unlikely I'd ever say this but this Angel Studios film wasn't religious enough. By that I mean it wasn't historically accurate if you are Christian and believe thr Bible is gospel. I'm of two frames of thought, either you are the above or you believe in history without religious connotations. So if your Angel Studios and you do believe in Christ why are you omitting details even from a children's story? Why was Thomas not his brother? Why does a small child in Victorian England know what the definition of adultery is? Why are the Roman's innocent of Jesus death and instead the blame is placed entirely on the Jewish people? These and a host of other reasons factor into why this is a bad film in addition to the animation quality, the timing of this release, and more.

The King of Kings tells an animated Christmas time story about the tale of Jesus bookended by Charles Dickens (Well Known Jesus Scholar....not) telling a story to his son Walter to curb his wild attitude about one king by inspiring him about another.

I watch every Angel Studios film. Most disappoint me but I go in with an open mind mostly because I liked Cabrini and actually think that was a well done film from them so I chase the high that they can do other good works but I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that could have been a fluke. I don't see merit in this film for anyone. It will give children a watered down version of Christian history that will need correcting in the future. It will infuriate adults who watch it and see the details being changed or omitted. If you are looking for a kids movie Minecraft is probably your better bet.

Mystery Movie Monday 4 7 2025

Drop is the newest Blumhouse Horror/Thriller Film. It's definetly better than some of their outings but still nothing genre redefining. A Woman out on a first date is threatened through "Drops" (essentially texts only able to be sent in a certain vacinity) to kill her date or else they will kill her child who is home being babysat.

What follows is 95 minutes of attempting to discover who is doing this to her while trying to comply for the safety of her child all while trying to maintain the date but mostly acting unhinged. There's some suspension of disbelief issues and just a bunch of moments that should have ended the date sooner that didn't that definetly remind you this was a movie and couldn't mirror reality.

The saving graces here are surprising things: The waiter is hilarious and we watch him and and anticipate his next interactions with delight. The mystery surrounding who is doing it is interesting as well as the reasoning.

Overall not a bad movie but definetly something you could wait and watch on Netflix in 6 months.

I can it this isn't the best bollywood movie from the last few years but it's certainly not a 1 like I'm seeing from other reviewers. Sikandar is a typical Action bollywood movie that trims the fat in some ways but adds additional bs and confusion in other ways.

Instead of a loose cannon cop pitted against corrupt government officials we have a literal modern day king? How is that not innovative?? It's bollywood so the films are over the top and if you are gonna be over the top might as well go all the way.

The films major issued lie in it's ability to stick to one story. It starts as a king causing ire for a government official so your like ok he's gonna lose something and have to double down on beating the government official and that does happen sort of....

When he loses what he loses he shifts to protecting 3 new individuals who he inserts himself into the life of. Yes he has reasons but it does feel forced. And the end is a little...abrupt.

Still though action, music, love, emotion, the film still hits most of the beats. I didn't not enjoy it. I just know it could have been more enjoyable.

Really enjoyed this. The Amateur is what happens when you take the non James bond character at the spy agency and send him on the revenge mission. He has all the drive and reason but none of the same skills. Basically what happens when they guy in the chair becomes the guy in the field. Rami Malik embodies the awkward nerdy tech guy. His mentor is Lawrence Fishburne and he is as much Yoda as he is Samuel L Jackson from Pulp Fiction.

Charlie (Rami) is a CIA Analyst and his wife an agent (is this black bag again? Nah more serious). On a routine conference trip she is killed and depsite their pledges to do something about the agency does nothing so Charlie sets out using all his tech powers and 171 IQ to track down the 4 people responsible for her death. What follows is roughly 2 hours of subterfuge and innovation in exacting his plans. He feels like the good (ish) version of Jigsaw setting traps and schemes to catch his prey in lieu of a gun to the head (i can hear Scott evil yelling i have a gun we can do it together).

The film is great. A few minor things here and there but it was definetly an enjoyable spy thriller. Is that what 2025 is going to be? I don't hate it.

Acting was great. Story was very non existent. That isn't to say nothing happened but it felt like a series of moments shown together rather than a solid plot through and through.

Hard truths focuses on a Black British Matriarch who spends 75% of the movie bitching. I'm not being hyperbolic. Scene after scene she finds a way to tear down everyone she shares time with for essentially her own pain which the third act sees fit to shine some light on but until then it could just be a series of reels where a woman is just destroying everyone emotionally until the end where she states she thinks everyone hates her and she is also unhappy in her marriage.

The film is good. I don't want my 3.5 to be misconstrued. But it definetly had room to be even better with maybe an additional 15 minutes and a little bit more expansion on a few characters. Either way this is an enjoyable piece of British cinema.

The movie is bad horror at its best. You aren't watching this for award potential unless we count the razzies. You are watching it to scratch that bad movie itch and it does the fine. I get the sense that the people who didn't enjoy this looked at this with very simplistic surface level eyes. This movie has layers and moving parts behind the scenes and by the time the end hits you either realized what a great piece of Horror you just watched or your sense of Horror is underdeveloped/marred by myriad bad horror films that when a good one comes around you don't know it.

The Woman in the Yard comes off with a simple name and premise leading you to believe that the film can't actually be a serious horror film. The thing is it distracts you with the obvious so it can slow burn you all throughout.
A woman and her children live on their farm in the wake of their husband/dad's death, one day waking to a black clad woman sitting in the yard just being a random, possibly imposing figure. What follows is just under 90 minutes of confusion, misdirection, small cast/small set tension and terror, hallucinations, reality perception questioning, revelations, scares and the unknown mixed with loss and just plain humanity. People can only handle so much even in their daily lives and this film makes it very clear that sometimes the scariest thing is just living. Also the ending is a great oh shit moment when you realize what's happened...if you do.

I recommend this highly. I don't necessarily think you need to watch it in theaters but it should go on your list if you truly like horror vs say twirling your hair and saying "oh my god i love horror" but your idea of a good horror movie is Ash. This will definetly scratch the itch.

As an affluent pair of scientists they feel they are ready for a baby and apply for an assessment: a 7 day government review to determine if they are eligible for a child and if so their genetic material will develop an out of utero baby. But the assessor is...challenging. She lives with them for 7 days istering impromptu tests and shifting back and forth between different persona's all to bend and break the couple the meaning being children are unpredictable and to truly be fit parents they need to survive the unexpected.

The films premise and execution are great. The actors have believable chemistry and the story unfolds in interesting ways. At 109 minutes the film does weirdly drag in a few parts and there are some moments at the end that would have worked better if left more ambiguous but overall an enjoyable film that keeps you interested from start to finish with no punches pulled and no plot neutering.

Nepali procedural crime drama that got some play at international festivals. Essentially a Trans Officer gets assigned to a high profile child kidnapping of two boys but all isn't as it seems. There are underlying societo economic factors that make it clear that even if the kidnapping is real it's not the real problem.

Good acting. Many characters underdeveloped. Well shot. Informative. Interesting

I'm shocked this came from a Disney studio. It really feels more like A24.

Controversy aside Majors acted the hell out of this piece.

Magazine dreams is like a fever dream. A man who gets nothing but shit on in every aspect of his life who is just trying to take care of his grandfather and become a famous bodybuilder is just trying to exist. At every turn be it work, or friends, or relationships we watch Killian Maddox just get closer and closer to going postal. He also comes off very much like is on some level of the spectrum or he's very punch drunk but it's just a marvel watching Majors personify this. As well it can the movie has a happier ending than it should and I think between it not going for the full gut punch as well as just some pacing issues it's mostly pretty good.

I'm not trying to discount any of his issues but it seems like Majors itted to his wrong doings and as long as he is doing what he is supposed to I really hope we see more of him. I would go so far as to hope this gets some award consideration both because he deserves it for this role and to remind Disney to stop convicting people in the court of public opinion. Every time they do it bites them in the ass. James Gunn is about Crack back this summer with Superman after Disney ruined their relationship I can only imagine what Jonathan Majors Crack back looks like.

Bill skarsgard tries to steal an SUV from Anthony Hopkins. Anthony Hopkins likes the idea of torturing those he feels need Justice. Turns out Bill is stuck in the suv because it's basically a bond car. 95 minutes of limited environments and torture equal locked. Not bad, interesting suspense thriller. Some boring parts some gross parts. Mostly enjoyable

Award Season is over and it's time to start planning for next year and what better way than to Chronicle the best of! I try to limit it to 12 titles One from Each Month. Some months suck or are better than others but we average one a month. The Numbers just signify their month not their places.

As with 2023 we are trying to stick with the 12 best movies of the year trying to give each month a shot. Some months were harder than others with February and June having multiple serious contenders. Please note their order on the list is irrelevant these consist of one movie from each month that personified the best that month had to offer.

  • Mean Girls
  • Perfect Days
  • The Peasants
  • The Listener
  • I Saw the TV Glow
  • Thelma
  • Deadpool & Wolverine

This was a hard choice for the best July movie. It Narrowly beat out Touch and Robot Dreams.

  • Dìdi (弟弟)

Not much competition in August. Closest second places were Blink Twice and Between the temples.

  • The Substance

This was really hard. This and Wild Robot were my best movies of September and while I loved them both for different reasons I feel like this movie is just a tiny bit more original. Wild Robot did so many things for me but when I break it down to the nitty gritty it is ultimately an adaptation of an existing story.

These are my best 12 movies of 2023. To be clear the ranking is not the actual order I believe they are good to bad but rather the order I watched them in as I felt each month deserved a shot at an entry on the list.
